Asked this in the actual movie thread and no one answered. Maybe someone here knows..
I just looked at my theater showing in Montreal and i see this : Kong: Skull Island - Special Engagement 70MM What is this? what's so special about it? It's playing on an IMAX screen also but it's in 3D, so what is this special 2D 70MM engagement? i tried googling it and found no explication. |

So it looks like the Gainesville/Manassas area Regal theater just raised their prices of their premium screens again. For a couple of years a move showing in their RPX screen would be the same price as another movie showing in that RPX screen but with 3d..so it would be 16.xx for both showings no matter if it was 2-d or 3-d. Now with the price hikes the 3d movies are now priced higher at 19.05 and the Manassas fake I-MAX now at $20.55.
I am not too sure night/first showings are going to be worth it anymore if the prices continue to break the $20 barrier for fake imax. Last edited by ITDEFX101; 03-08-2017 at 04:09 PM. |

I saw both "BvS" and "Fantastic Beasts" in 70MM at City Cinema 1,2,3 in NYC and they looked amazing and were great presentations overall, can't wait to see Kong in 70MM there as well

So how is it gonna look on an ordinary screen? bigger? just crispier? |

In all seriousness... the movie was shot digitally and finished in 2K, so I can't imagine any actual benefit to a 70mm showing. I suppose it'd add subtle, fine film grain? And also make it prone to damage from repeated showings... |

Oh man. Your totally missing out.
I don't like the regular RealD 3D much either. IMAX 3D (with digital projectors) is MUCH better. Since they are using 2 projectors the image is way brighter and there is way less eye strain. I'd recommend trying it once. You might like it. ![]() |

AFAIK these current 70mm blow-ups are slightly letterboxed for 2.39. Could be wrong though. And it's worth pointing out that most of the venues that still run 70mm today will have a more conventional shaped screen, be it flat or 'scope, they're not 2.20 by default.
