As always when my theater doesn't offer an IMAX 2D option i always want to know if there is at least special stuff to it. as i'm not a big fan of 3D, unless when it's really well done.

Is the 3D any good?

Thanks!
No shifting aspect ratios. 3D looks like it could be good from the trailers, I'm going to see it in IMAX 3D on Monday.

Asked this in the actual movie thread and no one answered. Maybe someone here knows..

I just looked at my theater showing in Montreal and i see this :

Kong: Skull Island - Special Engagement 70MM

What is this? what's so special about it? It's playing on an IMAX screen also but it's in 3D, so what is this special 2D 70MM engagement?

i tried googling it and found no explication.

So it looks like the Gainesville/Manassas area Regal theater just raised their prices of their premium screens again. For a couple of years a move showing in their RPX screen would be the same price as another movie showing in that RPX screen but with 3d..so it would be 16.xx for both showings no matter if it was 2-d or 3-d. Now with the price hikes the 3d movies are now priced higher at 19.05 and the Manassas fake I-MAX now at $20.55.

I am not too sure night/first showings are going to be worth it anymore if the prices continue to break the $20 barrier for fake imax.

Warners are doing limited 70mm engagements for their big event flicks, the movie is literally recorded onto conventional 5-perf 70mm and projected as such. Batman v Superman got a few of these, as did Fantastic Beasts IIRC.

I saw both "BvS" and "Fantastic Beasts" in 70MM at City Cinema 1,2,3 in NYC and they looked amazing and were great presentations overall, can't wait to see Kong in 70MM there as well and I would bet that any of the theaters that showed prints of these three movies will be on the list of 70MM theaters for "Dunkirk" in July.

Yes, they deep-fry all the prints for maximum crispiness.

In all seriousness... the movie was shot digitally and finished in 2K, so I can't imagine any actual benefit to a 70mm showing. I suppose it'd add subtle, fine film grain? And also make it prone to damage from repeated showings...

Most of the time when a 3D movie is released in IMAX all of the showings are 3D. 2D IMAX showings for 3D movies are a pretty recent and rare phenomenon.

Rogue One got a 70mm IMAX blow-up (so 15-perf, not 5) and it looked great in glorious 2D!

Fingers crossed Ep VIII will get the same courtesy.

Even IMAX 3D?

I can understand having issues with the active glasses, but IMAX 3D is pretty great. Passive glasses and bright.

Oh man. Your totally missing out.

I don't like the regular RealD 3D much either.

IMAX 3D (with digital projectors) is MUCH better. Since they are using 2 projectors the image is way brighter and there is way less eye strain.

I'd recommend trying it once. You might like it.

I'm going with someone who wears glasses and it sucks if they cant see it in imax because of 3d.

The IMAX 3D glasses fit right over regular glasses no problem. Go see it in glorious IMAX 3D and thank me later.

Thanks for the answer! Dunno what to do, should i just get the regular 2D digital presentation?

The 70MM IS 3$ extra per ticket... and if apparently it's not gonna look that different or better...

Im going Saturday, so hopefully somewhere there are people who would of actually been to those 70MMs and have opinions

Will Kong in 70mm have the 2.20:1 aspect ratio, or will it be letter-boxed 2.39:1.? 70mm screens are 2.20:1, for those that don't know.

AFAIK these current 70mm blow-ups are slightly letterboxed for 2.39. Could be wrong though. And it's worth pointing out that most of the venues that still run 70mm today will have a more conventional shaped screen, be it flat or 'scope, they're not 2.20 by default.
