I don't want to see anyone written up or fired, but if you advertise your IMAX Theater as having the best picture and sound and it doesn't..then you are really asking for trouble. It's funny because ever since Gainesville's RPX opened 4 years ago, attendance has dropped big time at the Manassas one.
With IMAX rooms, the volume used to be remotely reset after each show. So it would likely be how the movie was mastered during IMAX's DRM process.

Plus trailers are usually compressed and could be perceived to be louder rather than actually being (especially with the bright mid and high frequencies that exist in an IMAX room).

I know most purpose built IMAX's will automatically set a volume (for each movie, not each show), but all the managers I've talked to have always treated it as a base point, not something to necessarily adhere to. Retrofit theaters don't even do that.

4DX sounds utterly distracting... no thanks.

How do they clear the scents out of the room? Especially since one of the scents is "fart". If they have extraction fans running, wouldn't it increase the noise floor?

The water squirting reaction would be interesting to see in a movie like 50 shades.

The scents aren't too strong and they dissipate quick enough through the HVAC of the auditorium.

How more kinky you have to be to watch the 50 shades movie in this theater with that feature? I am sorry but to be the one who has to clean up after each showing........has got to suck.

I wonder what would be the ticket prices for these things? I am sure at the most 30 and that's before 3d/large screen up charges.

To be fair, they haven't released the 50 Shades movies in that format, and you can turn water effects off. I've seen 4dx a few times, and it's fun in small doses, but has a bunch of problems. The effects can get tiring in a film over two hours long, and indeed it can be distracting (not just the effects, but I've also had a few lines of dialogue drowned out by the fans used for wind).
I think a movie like Rings (which I saw in that format) or a second viewing of a film is a way to go, with Rings there wasn't a compelling story to be distracted from, and since much of the film was about "gotcha" jump scares, it worked for that. In NYC I think it's $25 for 2D films and $28 for 3D in 4dx, so it's probably the most expensive ticket outside of film festivals or special events, and that also is a limiting factor.

Rosedale AMC in Roseville, Minnesota has a Dolby Cinema room as well as 2K Digital IMAX and were both playing Beauty and the Beast but Dolby wasn't in 3D.

I watched Beauty and the Beast in IMAX 3D. On my way out I popped into the Dolby Cinema room just in time for the Ballroom scene.

It is a very unfair comparison because I went from a 3D screening with 1.9:1 open matte in IMAX to 2D 2.40:1 cropped with a 2K DI in Dolby but I liked the IMAX room better.

I know their IMAX is only 2K but with 3D glasses on you can't tell (I sit close for 3D and have to sit further back for 2D IMAX to not see pixels.

I sat forward of the entrance split in the Dolby room and could not see pixels, which is why 4K is very nice.

I'll have to give a proper 4K DI movie a chance in Dolby Cinema but I'll have to wait for now. I noticed an odd buzzing sound coming from the front in the Dolby room. When I spoke with a manager they said the Dolby Cinema rooms have motors that vibrate the screen!?!?! Apparently one of them is overly buzzy. They said it was because the green color emitted from the laser projector refracts differently. I dunno...

I've never heard of such a thing...does anyone really know why the Dolby Cinema room would have a vibrating screen?

It's part of the experience. LOL but honestly I think someone F'ed up when they built that screening room.

Its to reduce speckle due to the monochromatic laser sources. There are patents available for reading on google. The vibration is minimal although it does reduce sharpness slightly.

Newer technology is using better materials, perforations and coatings during screen manufacture, which combined with the actuation results in better sharpness.

So, the screen vibrates because they either built the projector wrong or the screens wrong. Got it.

Personally though, if you need some special fancy pants screen...I'd wager laser needs more R&D....do IMAX screens with laser projectors vibrate too?

Bad vibrations, yo.

I noticed the "vibrating screen" during the pre-show for Logan in a Dolby Cinema few weeks back. It went away once the previews began, but anytime the screen was bright or white before that, it was annoying.

Speckle is a problem due to the roughness of the screen combined with the narrow bandwidth / coherent of the light source (r, g, b, lasers) and not a problem with wide bandwidth Xenon lamps. It is most noticeable when either of pure white or R, G or B is dominant in the image, especially on silver screens.

All laser systems should have countermeasures against speckle, even IMAX. With IMAX, I think the Barco projectors also have wider bandwidth for each of the three lasers.

IMAX Patent screen vibration

IMAX Patent #2

AVS Forum article stating IMAX Laser uses transducers behind screen

It is an inherent problem with all laser systems.
