This seems like a lot of words to say they still don't know how to properly build a laser projector.

Quote:
There are three effective methods to counteract speckle. One is to employ a low-gain white screen instead of a silver screen. Although a white screen is preferred when using a color separation 3D system, the ability to use a passive polarization-based 3D system is lost. The second option is to mechanically vibrate the screen. In general, this is least preferred by exhibitors due to installation cost and, more importantly, the di culty in maintaining a vibration system over the life of a typical cinema projection screen. The third method to reduce speckle is to increase wavelength diversification in the system by adding more lasers with varying wavelengths. This countermeasure is typically employed by all laser projector manufacturers but is often limited by the availability, efficiency and cost of laser devices in various color ranges.

Dolby Cinema uses Christie projectors.

That's very interesting.
Admittedly, I still haven't got to see any laser projection here in SG. No IMAX Laser, no Dolby Cinema either.

Thanks for the links.

Something that's had me very curious with the Justice League trailer coming ou tomorrow....Snyder appears to have shot this on spherical Super 35, but here's the interesting part - if you compare the properly 1.85:1 framed trailer teases as posted on the official YouTube channels, and the square pan-and-scanned ones for social (Twitter etc):

It appears as though they're mastering the film (at least now anyway) for the full 4:3 frame - including the VFX shots:

Just a thought about how this film will be presented in IMAX, for the 1.9:1 screens it won't matters since the regular 1.85 version will fill these screens anyway like with Avengers 1, Pacific Rim, GITS and so on. But what if for 1.43:1 venues they end up showing it open matte i.e 'specially formatting' to fill the screen the way they've done with 2.40:1 releases for 1.9:1 screens?

Good catch! It does raise the question of just what they'll do with such a version, seeing as 4:3 TV (be it broadcast or home video) isn't really a widespread thing any more so it's not like they need to protect it for that.

If it's for IMAX 1.44 exhibition then what do they do with the 'full frame' version? What I mean is, the whole movie was likely shot Super 35 (aside from the usual digital alternates for aerial VFX plates, night exteriors etc) so are they going to alternate the ratios anyway or go fixed 1.44 throughout? That would be AWESOME, a complete theatrical feature in full-height IMAX presentation! Sure, 4-perf Super 35 ain't 15-perf IMAX 65mm but several action shots in Catching Fire's IMAX arena sequence were captured on 4/35 and they held up superbly on the 15/70 print.

from the teases it does appear there is a full 4:3 version for even the VFX shots, so it'd be no alternating ratios then.

Agree, it would be sweet, even if it isn't 15/70 for the whole duration, but a step closer to that experience. And yes, it would be a *very* limited rollout. WB have zero reason to do 70mm prints because no IMAX-shot footage....

By 70mm do you mean regular 5-perf? I ask because AFAIK Kong and Fantastic Beasts had no IMAX acquisition (be it film or digital) and yet they still got 70mm prints, right?

If you mean 15/70 prints: Yeah, I know Disney ain't Warners but I was very surprised that Rogue One got a 15/70 blow-up because it had neither IMAX footage nor any aspect ratio embiggening. It looked terrific and so IF Warners have indeed spent the time and money to actually finish JL in 1.44 then it makes perfect sense to do a 15/70 print run to show it off to the fullest.

As said above: Batman v Superman kinda puts a hole in that argument. Sure, Nolan exec produced that show but I think Warners are gonna go all out with Justice League. 70mm, IMAX 15/70, IMAX 4K laser, the whole schmear.

I was very glad I saw BvS in 2D 15/70. The 35mm looked like boiled shit but the IMAX stuff was heavenly.

sorry I'm referring to the home theater DVD/bluray/UHD releases being constant height

I seriously doubt they'd release any full length 1:44 prints. It's never been done before.

Would love to be wrong.

Here's a cut down version of the trailer presented in 1:1 - again, lends to how they're rendering the FX and keeping the frame safe for 4:3

Zack told me on Vero he was inspired by the IMAX AR as reason for 1.85. 4 perf 35mm, would be a shame to waste that

We saw Beauty and The Beast yesterday in IMAX. Movie was supposed to be 2D but something went wrong and they had it in semi-3D. Eventually they shut off one of the projectors and we just watched it in 2D with just one projector. Looked OK, just like a standard cinema.
