Because it wasn't filmed in IMAX.

There are some movies that were filmed in IMAX yet due to lack of advertisement, no one knows about it. For example I had no idea TDK and Inception where in IMAX....there was no big push to advertise it in IMAX. There are times where I see people ask on Twitter if the movie is filmed in IMAX and usually the director replies to the question.

As for TDK - it was the very first Hollywood film to be filmed in IMAX so of course the push wasn't as big as it was, say, for TDKR or Interstellar or Dunkirk now. The only recent example of a film shot on IMAX that not only didn't have the AR changes but completely downplayed the use of the cameras was Besson's Lucy. Next to that was probably HG: Catching Fire where Lionsgate struck a paltry (for the time) amount of 70mm prints |

But aside from that I've seen every time IMAX cameras were used being a significant part of the production notes and advertisement. And even the films which have special IMAX formatting are usually pretty clear now, with Beauty and the Beast, Guardians Vol 2, and now Pirates all including "specially formatted for IMAX" on their IMAX posters and the first two (with Pirates likely following) having videos about the expanded aspect ratio on IMAX's YouTube channel. |

On a similar thread, is there a list of movies released on 4k in IMAX? Or do they follow the standard DCP release specs?

IMAX creates their own DCPs. I think every movie released in IMAX laser is a 4K release (which is the majority of their releases since 2015), though not 100% sure of that.

No list. Chances are if the movie was mastered in 4K, then IMAX will try and get a 4K version. You kinda just have to trust your eyes. At these sizes, I find the variance in sharpness between a 4K show and 2K show to be blatantly obvious. I saw A Beautiful Planet in 4K laser and the detail knocked my socks off, Ghost in the Shell, on the other hand, didn't look much, if any, more detailed than the average 2K Xenon IMAX show I've gone to.

Now likely a native 4K title will likely look better under the system, though in the admittedly not huge list of films I've seen in IMAX laser, I thought GITS looked the best: over Rogue One, Force Awakens (with the exception of the 15/70 sequence), Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, Logan, and XXX: Return of Xander Cage. The Star Wars titles looked really nice also though IMO (as did Resident Evil, though the super choppy editing left a lot of that to waste), and I saw A Beautiful Planet on Xenon digital on a screen a fraction of the size so that wouldn't be a fair comparison. |

If you like D-Box then they are a lot better. Mad Max: Fury Road in 4DX certainly was a good if slightly bruising experience. Basically, if you liked the film enough to see it a second time then you should give it a try. |

Has anyone ever gone to a mall and wonder how the hell do they manage to install movie screens (standard and large format) and still not charge a huge amount for the tickets compared to their stand alone locations?
I am thinking of places like Tyson's corner....or even other places like Regal in Fairfax Town center. |

Six movies this year not shot with IMAX cameras are still set to use special IMAX formatting. Beauty, Guardians, and Pirates are obviously half of that number (and are mentioned in the article), but wonder what the other three are. |
