The post is 1.85:1 (breath of fresh air!) and was projected so. The screen it was projected onto was a scope one and the movie had black bars at the sides. But a small portion of the bottom, a sliver, was covered by black semi transparent material, like a border.

Okay. I know what you're referring to now. I think it did that even when flat movies were projected on film.

^ Why do they cover up the bottom like that?

I used to work at a movie theater long ago and as far as I can remember, it's about framing because with movies shot in flat, if you don't frame too low, you will see boom mics in the image and that border is usually used to cover up extra information in the print because flat movies are essentially 4 perf (aka square-ish)
I could be wrong here and I'm not positive on how flat films are projected via DCP.

Weird. I just got back from seeing Maze Runner at my local IMAX where the screen is 1:90:1 and it still had bars on the sides. Was a bit strange like watching a big 4:3 TV show.

There was an issue with the 3D so it played in 2D only.

I thought Maze Runner was 2d only?

so someone explain to us why the black bars on the side? It wasn't like watching a 4:3 tv show but it was just there and kinda disappointing as with a movie presented in full frame IMAX you would think you would be able to see the entire movie fill up the entire screen. I would check it out at Udvar but they are playing that Bollywood movie in 3d.....a bollywood movie in IMAX and 3d no less!?!? Running time is nearly 3 hours :O

It's 3D here in the UK.

It was shot in anamporhic, so no expanded scenes amigo. Also, why the frick would go see the movie for that when you can go on porn sites that offer more racier (and probably more healthier) examples of bondage?

Looking at the IMDB info, the aspect ratio is causing the black bars (if the info is correct). Digital IMAX screens are 1.90:1, so a 1.78:1 image would be slightly taller, causing the movie to be slightly pillarboxed (black bars on the side).

That is correct for film, though a flat DCP doesn't contain any information outside of the intended frame like film does, or at least the way it did back in the day.

Why porn sites? There have been far better films that handled the bondage subject much better. Secretary is a good example and a not so good example would be Exit to Eden.

It's a joke mock-up I made , I doubt they shot it in full IMAX..but can you imagine 12 feet of the screen filled with her boobs?

That Bollywood movie is 'Padmaavat' by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, based on a historical epic poem of the same name. Bhansali makes epic-scale tragedies and his movies are praised for their astounding visuals and cinematography and acting, as well as music. Check it out in IMAX 3D if you can and tell us how it compares to US 3D movies.

There wouldn't be any problems with a 1.78:1 movie playing on a 1.89:1 screen if they used curtains/masking to cover the black bars at the sides. But theatres nowadays are just lazy and don't care about the cinematic experience for audiences much.

It was. It was the first film I've seen at the Dolby Vision theater that was 1.85. 2.4 films fill the screen. "The Post" was full height, but had black bars left and right. It was okay and the edges were sharp, but masking would have made it better.

I am wondering how Avengers:IW will be projected nation wide on IMAX screens? Considering that there is a lot of talk that it was shot completely in IMAX. I expect it to have black pillars on the left and right side of the screen if Maze Runner is any indication of what to expect. My guess is the only true way to see IW will be at Udvar....unless they pull a TLJ and letterbox the final product on IMAX screens.

The director needs to come out on twitter and tell us how many IMAX full frame sequences are in the movie. Hopefully we don't get a VAR IMAX like in TF:TLK.

It'll be presented completely in 1.90:1, thus filling the entire IMAX (digital) screen for the entire runtime. They used the Alexa 65/IMAX cameras for the entire production.

Unless the screen is a CIH (2.39:1); in which case it'll be either cropped or pillarboxed. The former being more likely than the latter.

They still used anamorphic lenses as well so it will not be completely 1.9 (cropping that footage) - it will be 2.4 for those sequences.

Yeah, I was under the impression that it'd be 1.90 throughout but the bokeh of anamorphic is unmistakable in the trailer, likely the UP70 glass again.

But someone mentioned something that because the Alexa 65 is 6.5K anyways they could've actually framed up the conventional 2.39 extraction a fair ways inside the anamorphic frame which would give them enough room to vertically embiggen.
