Well according to
https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer...819467786&z=13 it's a 1.37:1 aspect ratio... My first viewing of the movie was at Manassas Regal IMAX and according to that site it is a 1.72:1 aspect ratio... The image filled the entire screen during the entire movie. err what's going on here? |

Well, with that 1.37 aspect ratio, I would expect some letterboxing. I'm not sure about a 1.72 screen (I'm assuming that's a digital IMAX, I know they make them wider than 1.9, but I wasn't sure about taller), but they may be deciding to use some cropping to fill the screen rather than try and perfectly present a 1.9 aspect ratio. |

It's 1.9 (right from the video description)
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=azx4iYYXUto "Marvel and IMAX will make cinematic history with AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR, which marks the first Hollywood film entirely shot using IMAX cameras. Exclusively in IMAX® theatres, the film will be presented in its entirety in an expanded 1.9:1 aspect ratio – showing audiences up to 26% more of the image than standard theatres – providing IMAX fans with even greater scope and immersion." The reason they always say "up to 26% more" is accounting for IMAX theaters with an aspect ratio wider than 1.9 |

Hmmm then what was Dunkirk at? Now that movie filled the entire screen at Udvar...with the exception of a few sequences. |

This IMAX aspect ratio shenanigans is getting out of hands.
Went to Lockheed in DC and IW was partially letterboxed but it filled up most of the screen (that screen is 1.64:1 so the letterboxing isn't as egregious like in Udvar). Still a delight to watch. |

Soooooooooooo is this the fill the screen IMAX movie that the company and studio has been talking about for months?!? Shit even Micheal Bay did a better job at giving us a full frame IMAX presentation for TLK...... What the hell is going on here!?!?!?!

I thought that the tallest you'd get out of the IMAX version of TLK was 1.90? That too was shot on the IMAX'd Alexa 65 just like IW. Maybe the ADHD effect of the alternating ratios made the taller 1.90 scenes more impactful than a straight 1.90 all the way through.

The other way is if Bay himself did the pan & scan 1.43:1 for certain IMAX screens, which I highly doubt. I know there are some IMAX screens where they indeed zoom and crop. But so far, I've only heard 1.89:1 IMAX screens to do so and only with 2.39:1 content because the audience would keep complaining about black bars. Saw Deadpool 2 today. Most shots I noticed, at least a lot of the action stuff, was captured on 35mm anamorphic. I could immediately see the fine layer of grain and softness at the edges that you get with 35mm anamorphic.
Oddly though, the end credits do not mention Kodak at all, only Alexa. I may have missed it as well. Much better film, with a real emotional heart, than Deadpool 1, in my opinion. Oh, and the last scene was just awesome! |

I only found out the other day that David Leitch directed Deadpool 2, with Jon Sela as his DP, and them two cats LOVE anamorphic so it's no surprise that they went that way on Mr The Pool 2. They like using the Hawk "Vintage" 74's (new lenses made to be all wafty and ill-defined like shitty old glass from 40 years ago) but switched to a newer type of anamorphics for this film, the "class-X" from Hawk which are designed to provide dat anamorphic look which we know and love but with more resolution and contrast. I like their V-Lites also, as used on the Kingsman movies.
