And in the film, the flag isn't a big moment because it'd undercut the main emotional thing about the whole scene. Hell, the first drafts of the script didn't even have the One Small Step line!

Quote:
I guess it could have been worse, because in my very first draft I didn’t even have him say, “One small step …” I wanted to get out of what was expected entirely. [Laughs.] I literally just wanted the personal moment at Little West crater to be the whole thing.

Then, Damien was like, “No, we should do ‘One small step …’ because it’s so iconic.”
To me, it’s all about what you didn’t know, not what you do know. Everyone has seen “One small step …” Everyone has seen the flag planting, the phone call with Houston.

But what most people don’t know is that Neil wandered off to Little West crater at the end of his little sojourn on the moon. It wasn’t planned. He just wandered off to take a look at the crater. Then the question is, “What did he do there? What did he think about there?”

I'm kind of curious to see this at a digital IMAX screen to see what the aspect ratio is.
'Thriller' was shot on 4-perf 35mm with a 1.33:1 aspect ratio. The projection would have removed 5% of image from all four edges. So, creating a 1.43:1 vertical crop from the negative would not lead to any significant cropping at all. They'd most likely contain the same height as the 1.33:1 projection but include the full 35mm width that was originally masked during projection.

so the 3d version of Thriller is showing only in the IMAX version of the Clock movie? So all 2d regular screens are not getting it?

it's an IMAX exclusive, but only to "select" IMAX screens.

*sighs* Weren't the Lunar sequences shot on IMAX 70mm though!?

"Experience 'First Man' to the Fullest." I'm expressing my disappointment in the fullest. Thanks, IMAX.

So is there a list of screens where this is playing?
Udvar was mentioned but I have no desire to see Clock.

Glados, it will probably open up in 15/70. I assume they're advertising the digital IMAX versions which will probably be the majority of the IMAX versions that the general public will see. I hope they do a nolan thing where they release the 15/70 clips in OAR on blu.

There's also an IMAX screen at the Air & Space and one in Silver Spring at the Majestic.

as far as I can tell from Regal's website the Majestic's IMAX is only showing the movie, not the inclusion of 'Thriller'

the double feature is only at the Air & Space Udvar Hazy Airbus theater, not at the intown Lockheed Martin IMAX screen.

The two IMAX (digital) I live closest to are playing "...Clock..." in 2D, and no mention of Thriller. Thriller has also been converted to 3D, so, I'm guessing only playing with "...Clock..." 3D showings.

EDIT: I also see mention that Thriller is only showing for the first week, so, today or tomorrow will be the last day.

This may be nitpicking, but, 4-perf 35mm film using spherical lenses has an aspect ratio of 1.375:1, (unless you're talking pre-1930s). This is true for just about anything shot on 35mm film intended for release on pre-HD NTSC TV, (or before prepping for widescreen by shooting wider), however, yes, the 1.33 AR frame would fit within all four edges, not just cropping the sides, and that framed area is what would be transferred to video tape for broadcast. It is possible (likely) they re-scanned the film and used the full area of the film so there would be less to crop, (if that is indeed what they did), however, in some cases, the area outside the frame may contain artifacts not intended to be seen, (...in the case of Star Trek The Next Generation, there were various things such as lights, cam stands or scratches on the negative and such see , but, this was about going from 4:3 to 16:9, not quite the same thing). So, it might not be as big a deal, but, cropping top & bottom is generally not a good idea as you can cut main subject matter off, or get them too close to the edge, or otherwise lose composition. However, in this case, I would guess they opened it up as much as they could before cropping to 1.43:1, so, cropping could have been minimal.

I'm not sure where you get the 5% masking for projection from...perhaps it is old school training to frame your film knowing that some of the edges will be slightly cut off in projection, and to allow 5% for this, but, unless the projectionist was terrible, it wouldn't be cut off by that much.

actually Universal didn't convert 'House' to 3D at all - it's just 'Thriller' that is in 3D.

Yeah, that is odd, but, the film is in 3D in "select territories", not North America.

4-perf is actually printed on film at a taller/narrower aspect ratio (roughly 1.19:1) if you leave the soundtrack area on the left. Look at an example below and see how the frame is NOT 1.37:1 -

5 copy.jpg

As for cropping, all 35mm, 70mm showings have images at the edges masked off by the film gate, which stabilises the film during projection. I said 5 percent because I compared film frames and projected frames of the same shot and that was an educated estimate, not a statement. The entire image is never shown. This is even true in most digital projection, even though they don't have film gate.
I have seen that in most projections, the theatre screen does not show the entire height of the frame, whether 2.40:1 or 1.85:1, in a CIH screen. There is always a thin strip of image at the vertical space that the screen does not accommodate. This is true for almost all scope screens. I noticed this in 'The Post' and 'Jurassic World 2.'
For JW2, I saw more image on the top and bottom (about 2%) on a 1.89:1 screen than on the regular 2.40:1 screen. For 'The Post,' I could see a black cloth border on the screen that was masking 2% of image vertically. This is true for most digital scope screens I've visited.

Does anyone know what sort of setup the IMAXes at the Kennedy Space Centre have? They're doing the First Man US press junket there this weekend and they held a screening last night. All info online seems to suggest it doesn't have any sort of digital - Xenon or Laser...and they didn't screen it in regular DCP either.

that's strange since from what I can tell online is that it's a 15/70 equipped theater, but no 15/70 prints have been struck for exhibition by Universal.
