It's really frustrating IMAX is pulling back on 3D in theaters. I've often skipped movies because they weren't in IMAX 3D and most regular RealD sucks. Some theaters have good RealD in their 'premium room', but even they have pulled back.
Venom is a good example of a movie I'd probably skip but will see BECAUSE of IMAX 3D. If an 'iffy' title is playing in IMAX 3D, I'm much more likely to go see it than if it's just in 2D. |

The new multiplex IMAX laser projector (I suspect this is what they were installing when the screen has been closed the past few weeks, but I called the theater's staff and they also confirmed it) has been installed at AMC Empire 25 and will begin showing tonight with Venom. I'll see that at Lincoln Square tomorrow since they are showing it in IMAX 3D (the other locations are showing it in 2D), but do want to check out that system and probably will do so with First Man.

I'll have to watch it on a 1.90:1 LIEMAX 2K system...projected on a 1.43:1 screen.....the horror! ![]() (Great Clips IMAX at the Minnesota Zoo, I begged them to wait for the 4K laser but they pushed the 2K system through 8 months before the 4K rollout.) |

Yeah, they definitely said so. Probably something changed in post production (like with The Last Jedi, which not only announced expanded image with its IMAX shot scenes but even had a trailer in IMAX theaters featuring the expanded ratio)

Ugh don't remind me how disappointed I was seeing no AR changes in that movie. As I stated in the other thread , Venom had an aggressive sound mix this time around. Even the front dialog speakers were normalized so you could hear the person and not be drowned out by the sound effects. |

Well, IMAX hasn't completely forgotten 1.43 in their marketing. I saw Venom today and there was an IMAX featurette for First Man as part of the trailers complete with several 1.43 shots.

The 3D is good, but not great. Lots of depth and decent layering. I think it makes the action scenes better. It’s not as strong as any of the recent MCU films were, but I enjoyed the IMAX 3D presentation and will be seeing it a second time in that format.

I would be interested in hearing reactions from anyone who sees Venom there (I saw it at Lincoln Square). But do think I will see First Man there rather than Lincoln Square (despite losing the 1.43 screen) to see how the new system looks. |
