Cinemark and AMC charge about $15.50 USD for Digital LieMAX 3D.

HOLY! You pay double to triple what we pay!
Why do you think my IMAX shut down and was bought out by Cineplex...

It's a shame cinema isn't popular like it was back before I came along. Cause everyone would demand the best experience, and the IMAX corporation would be everywhere.

I love big screen cinemas, although with the multiplex formats arriving a lot of beautiful cinemas got demolished or turned from one screen into three or even bingo halls.
Frickin shame.
I still remember watching Total Recall at the Odeon Marble Arch which was the biggest screen in the UK at the time, superb.

Everyone says the AR is to be 1.44:1 and I agree but does anyone have confirmation that this is in fact the case?
yeah, I saw the film at Udvar Hazy tonight and the IMAX shot scenes do not film the entire screen - there's is very minor band border at the top of the image.

I've never heard of IMAX and Atmos teaming together, are you sure it's not the RPX screen that will have the Atmos sound system?

Yep. There is a black bar at the bottom of the screen also, but you wouldn't have noticed it unless you stood up during the movie or sat in the first few rows.

Please see this article which is an interview with the people responsible for the VFX of the movie.

The 1.66 aspect ratio is confirmed. I'm sure you will find a way to say the people responsible for the VFX don't know what they are talking about.

Interesting. I didn't read the whole article as it is quite the read (by my standards anyways) but I did catch the part about them going with a 1.66:1 AR instead of the 1.44:1 (1.33:1 is what they said). So this helps add credibility to what I and others have said. I may have to check out more of the article to see WHY they chose the AR they did.

here's more of the extract:

"How Pixomondo’s Ben Grossmann describes the challenges of delivering shots in both 2:35 and IMAX:
“In scenes that were shot in anamorphic 35mm they were letterboxed 2:35 and delivered right justified with 220 pixels of black.
Even in those scenes which are all CG we will deliver the shots in IMAX in stereo natively rendered but matted down to 1:66 instead of 1:33 aspect ratio.
In certain scenes that were shot in IMAX, then we’ll deliver IMAX and with breakouts for stereo conversion, but in any shots that are in IMAX in all-CG they will be delivered in full stereo.
There were sequences that intercut from one to the next from 2:35 to IMAX stereo native to converted 2:35 to IMAX footage inside of a full CG environment.
In 2:35 we would re-compose the IMAX frames so that they would favor the 2:35."

Hmmm. They showed a full-screen IMAX trail just before the movie (that goofy countdown thingy, you know the one) and the full-screen 15/70 3D Into Darkness shots looked no different to me. I noticed no borders at all, sat about three rows from the back.

But if an FX guy say it's 1.66, then I haven't got a leg to stand on. HOWEVER it's worth bearing in mind that that quote came from the Pixomondo guy, NOT Roger Guyett or anyone at ILM, i.e. ILM may have delivered full-height shots but other vendors clearly did not, probably for the sake of expediency.

Yes, I'm grasping at straws. It's all I've got left.

Just to add more fuel to the flames, the BFI were asked about the aspect ratio of the Into Darkness IMAX scenes. Their response? 1.44 to 1. (see pic)

Curiouser and curiouser...

FX/CGI shots don't have to be created in the same ratio as the IMAX 15/70 frame. That doesn't mean that non-FX/CGI shots aren't in 1.44:1.

If you are saying there were 3 different aspect ratios in the movie, you are wrong.

Remember, IMAX Digital has an aspect ratio of 1.9:1 whereas IMAX film (15/70) is 1.44:1.

Now, what I'm predicting is that for the IMAX release of Into Darkness, the image on the 15/70 footage was probably framed for 1.9:1, even for the 15/70 release (anyone seen a 15/70 version and can confirm/ deny?). So my guess all IMAX versions (15/70 and digital) jump between 2.39:1 and 1.9:1. The reason for the VFX being done at 1.66:1 is probably for the home video release.

This I can say with certainty: the BFI IMAX 15/70 3D version I saw was not in 1.90, not even close. Whether it was 1.66 or 1.44, that's up in the air at the moment, even though the BFI have stated it was 1.44 and I know I saw it fill the screen from floor to ceiling.

But, whatever. This is now one of those uber-contentious issues that will be debated forever more on the internets.

IMAX is getting in the Home Theater business:

All the more reason to release Blu-rays with the IMAX presentation intact!
