That's how I knew they weren't showing it was by calling them. All the guy at the box office counter could say was that they were going to be showing the next Hobbit movie and not Catching Fire. Normally with these matters I could just email the VP in charge of the IMAX, but, so far, my last two emails haven't been replied to. I guess trying to tell him there might be a problem with the sound in the theater didn't sit well and now he is ignoring me. It is a new month though, so I may try firing off another email.

To not show Catching Fire is odd though given that they have shown every other movie shot with an IMAX camera.

I just checked, and the Bob Bullock in Austin will be showing it. I wonder if it'll be a film print or if they're installing one of those interim digital projectors that don't take up the whole screen. I really hope it's a 15/70 film print.

I didn't think the laser-digital systems wouldn't be coming out til next year. and since 'Catching Fire' was partially filmed in 15/70 - it would behoove IMAX theaters that still present 15/70 not to go digital yet.

Hmm your IMAX theater may be showing the movie, but sadly it may actually be digital as opposed to a film print and there is actually a presidence for this thought. If I may I'd like to quote one of your first posts within this very thread. I do not know where you got your information for that post but assuming it to be true there then may be cause for concern with this upcoming sequel.

Cinemark Webb Chapel IMAX -- The Hunger Games (digital, Lionsgate refused to make film prints for any exhibitor)
(Note: The screen is larger than what they use at AMC NorthPark, but it's still much smaller than the Real IMAX screens in Austin, Houston, and San Antonio.)

Yes, I know, but as others have pointed out, the combat portion of this movie was shot with Real IMAX cameras. The trailer even expands vertically to 1.78:1 as Katniss prepares to jump in the water.

Anyway, Lionsgate has made a lot of money off of the first movie alone, and showing this in Real IMAX will only enhance the revenue stream, especially if they're able to get IMAX theaters to keep playing it until The Hobbit 2 comes out.

Does it even matter? 15/70 IMAX is on life support and the November opening assures that The Twilight Saga: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire will make less than the original. The film will get the standard three weeks on IMAX before going into smaller theatres.

Hey guys,

I want to see Gravity at the AMC star Fitchburg 18 in Fitchburg, WI. I am wondering if this is a real IMAX or a LieMax?

It says that it started out as 15/70 and it is now Digital. It has 349 seats, so it isn't as big as the only other IMAX theater I have been to, the Minnesota Zoo IMAX; which is HUGE!!! I am wondering if this is an ideal theater to make the 2 hour trip to or should I just stay in my area and check it out at the local Ultrascreen.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Silent.

Yes, it does. IMAX still hasn't deployed digital projectors that can cover the entire 6-/7-story screens that 15/70 film projectors can.

Also, 15/70 theaters tend to book movies for at least 4 to 6 weeks instead of the briefer Digital IMAX runs.

Yeah, I think it was a 15/70 then converted. Does that affect the screen size?

It's rare that 15/70 auditoriums are switched to Digital. If that's true of your theater, then either they made the screen smaller, or the projector doesn't project an image that covers the entire screen.

If they can get extended runs in real IMAX theaters then it might pan out for them, but consider this. How many digital IMAX theaters are there compared to real (film) IMAX theaters? I mean I can see the conundrum in my own thought that being why would the director shoot in IMAX if no one will get to see that IMAX footage? Clearly with the first game Lionsgate had some reason for not making any film prints. Maybe once again they have reasons. They may not be good nor may we agree with them but still.

The simply answer to this debate is for someone to show me proof at least one REAL IMAX theater is getting a film print of this movie!

Well, lemme put this into the discussion.

Skyfall was shot digitally. The Bob Bullock IMAX in Austin got a 15/70 film print and played the movie for about a month, probably until The Hobbit 1 kicked it off the screen.

If a movie is big enough of an "event", studios will still strike 15/70 film prints.

I live next to a theater with a digital IMAX but the rest of the rooms show the films projected by Sony 4K. If they have that, what's the point of having the IMAX there?

From the OP:

Quote:
Digital IMAX (aka Fake IMAX, LieMAX, etc.)
This is a licensing/certification business that IMAX Corp created. Basically, a regular auditorium is modified to have the screen brought closer to the seats and to have the screen fit from wall to wall and floor to ceiling. The screen aspect ratio is 1.78:1 (like 16x9 TVs), so for movies that were shot with IMAX cameras (The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, Mission Impossible -- Ghost Protocol, etc.), you only see 1.78:1 rather than the full 1.44:1.
It's not simply a matter of digital projection but also what IMAX calles "theater geometry".

Proof enough? http://www.imaxmelbourne.com.au/movi..._catching_fire

Booked tickets at the BFI IMAX for this, surprised how IMAX sales have been quite quiet...at the BFI, Star Trek and TDKR crashed their website due to demand and opening weekend seats were nearly gone by the end of the day, this time...not so much.

The geometry in the regular rooms are almost identical to the seating of the IMAX. And I don't care how a seating is displayed. All I care about is the visuals.

This is what Wikipeda says, not very truthful usually but I found this interesting.

Fitchburg – AMC Star Fitchburg 18 (15/70 mm, 3D, MPX)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_IMAX_venues

Do you think they will tell me if it is real IMAX if I call the theater?

/Film also has a webpage (2 years old) that says that the IMAX theater is real as well. I am getting really confused.

It might be a Real IMAX theater. It wouldn't hurt to call them and ask if they have a 15/70 projector. If they say that it's Digital only, then it's probably not Real IMAX.

You asked what the difference was. If you don't care, don't ask!
