Well, even a giant IMAX screen can only absorb so many bullet holes before they get distracting.

Probably harder to justify showing feature films at such a venue.

But they DID show films there pre-pandemic is the point. They've got 4K laser, 15/70, an actual 1.44 screen (BFI is more like 1.33), all the gear and now they just show the same old IMAX documentaries over and over. What a total waste.

It’s especially annoying when they knew there was going to be a huge renovation keeping the other Imax across the mall at Air & Space closed for a couple years. If they didn’t feel like making a deal with Imax to install a laser projector, they could’ve at least stayed open and moved the one from Air & Space to their theater so it wouldn’t go to waste for all that time.

But then again, in light of the pandemic, the one upside of both downtown Smithsonian theaters being closed is that it sends that much more business to the nearby LieMax locations in dire need of it.

Is that actually a good thing? Doesn't that just support the proliferation of LieMAX?

Was able to catch Dune at the Airbus IMAX last week! Well worth the drive over after work (though I-95 is a nightmare as usual). Very happy this theater is open again and need to get around to visiting the rest of the museum sometime soon.

Saw Dune in IMAX last night. It was my first time watching a movie on a real IMAX screen, even though it was only digital IMAX. I got there pretty early (before they were even showing anything) which gave me a chance to marvel at the size of the screen. The style of the seating also felt premium even though it wasn't reclining. The picture was pretty grainy during some of the previews but once the movie started it looked pretty good except for a few scenes like when Paul was having breakfast with his mom. The opening of the movie was amazing and I loved the parts with the expanded aspect ratio, although it didn't reach all the way to the top of the screen. I'm not sure if it would have done that for laser IMAX. I wonder how long I'll have to wait until there's another must-see movie for IMAX. Hopefully there will be one before Dune: Part 2. Maybe next time I'll drive a bit farther to see single-laser IMAX. The sad thing is that the lieMAX screens around here seem to get more traffic (and cost more) than the IMAX screen I went to. If there's any 70mm showings of Death on the Nile I would love to go to one.

it's a great museum, make sure to see the CE3K mothership prop !

I wish I had seen Dune here, but I saw this over at AMC Tyson's Corner and twice at Showplace ICON The Boro in 4K laser/Dolby Atmos. The Atmos mix sounded the best IMO.

I think any good movie benefits from a premium theater experience. But the next two with filming done on IMAX cameras appear to be Dr. Strange 2 and Top Gun 2 (that one is ENTIRELY filmed in IMAX). I have to imagine Top Gun 2 would benefit more than most movies from the giant screen. So I'd consider that as much of a must-see in IMAX as anything.

Then there's Avatar 2, which is the only upcoming movie that says the full frame will be opened up for the entire movie. I certainly hope IMAX goes back to 3D for that one, and I expect they will.

Wikipedia has an upcoming IMAX list with notes on whether it uses expanded aspect ratio or IMAX cameras:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...d_in_IMAX#2022

And IMAX has their own page for just the movies coming soon, but at least you know that list is accurate:

The 1.43 footage in Dune was stunning at Lincoln Square (the third act was mostly 1.43 footage as well as some sequences in the first 2/3). Really the whole theatrical experience was the best thing about a movie I liked overall, but felt like a lot of set up

The Eternals have footage shot with an IMAX camera. You can see it starting today.

anyone see 'Eternals' on a 1.43 screen ? thoughts? I saw this on a fixed 1.90 screen over at Tyson's and I don't know why it bothered me but the changing aspect ratio was so wonky and felt very badly jumbled together.

I saw it on a 1.43 screen and the changing ratios didn't take away from the movie at all.
