There is a single supplier of 65/70mm film: Kodak. There is a single lab that can handle 15/70 IMAX film. One left in the entire world. At one time there were a dozen. Kodak wanted to end their relationship with film altogether. It took a bunch of Hollywood directors to convince them to strike a deal where X amount of movies per year would be shot on film. Could be 16, 35 or 70mm. Was not specific as Kodak sells them all. They stop shooting on film, Kodak pulls the plug and all movies from then on will be digital. |

Holy crap. Had no idea the BFI IMAX *finally* got a 4K laser projektor installed, though they're keeping the 15/70 gear too: https://www.bfi.org.uk/news/bfi-imax...-major-upgrade
Gonna have to make a trip to see AWoW there in the new year I reckon. |

so finally yesterday I was able to check out the 'The Big Show' screen over at the new Alamo Drafthouse (Crystal City, Arlington Virginia) and saw 'Avatar: The Way of Water' (for the fourth time). It was the second best presentation of the movie I saw - and it was only in 2D, non-high frame rate; but the Barco 4k laser, 2.39 aspect ratio looked fantastic. The Dolby Atmos system actually out shined the dodgy Atmos system over at Tyson's which has long been hit or miss.
This isnt really about premium screens, but with the recent announcement of Regal closing select theatres nationwide and specifically in the DC region: downtown DC Gallery Place; Bowie and Rockville Maryland; I'm curious to hear and know what's going to happen with the first. Word supposedly is that a chain might come in and change it over. please a chain that supports and installs auditoriums with Dolby Atmos soundsystems. I went over the weekend to see 'Pathaan' in IMAX at Regal Fox in Ashburn Virginia, and talk about a schmanzie theatre, very high tech ... and the IMAX laser system looked and sounded great ! |

the furthest theatre I went to last year was the Library of Congress Packard Campus down in Culpepper Virginia - that's a real treat to see an older movie in a new 'oldish' looking auditorium. |

Good for you. I always get jealous when I see you talking about the theaters in the DC area. I want to try and think of a theater in the area that you haven't been to.

no, not yet, I was a Tyson's II last month having dinner at Wildfire and I saw the theater but it had to open ... Showplace set the bar high with laser (2K and 4K) projectors and 7.1 surround sound in all the auditoriums.
