Have you seen the new laser replacement?

The best IMAX mixes I was talking about usually were seen at Lincoln Square (also most of the Atmos mixes I've seen were in one of their regular screens downstairs).

And while that is now technically a IMAX-lite (no more 15/70 and not laser for a while), it was first built for 15/70 documentaries and up until Fall 2013 only ran film, so I'm sure it has the center height channel.

Does anyone else dislike the fact that seemingly all IMAX showtimes are 3D? One thing I have noticed with theater-brand PLF's is that they will split the showtimes between 2D and 3D. This is good to see. I wish IMAX would allow the same policy and I can see why theaters are slowing down in their adoption of IMAX.

Theater brand PLF has actually surpassed IMAX screen count in North America. I suspect the discrepancy will continue to grow, especially as some of the long-term contracts with IMAX run out and theaters decide they would rather have full control of their auditoriums.

One small chain that has the right model is Santikos. They built a theater near Houston called Palladium featuring 6 PLF screens that are each 85 feet wide. Santikos has complete control over them and can put all shows in 2D if they want, they can put stuff like Minions on those screens instead of the flop Terminator movie, etc.

I asked IMAX about this once. They said that they make their showings 3D-only to maximize money intake. They just want to charge you the extra $3 to $10 for glasses.

I would pay extra to watch movies in 2D IMAX. 3D gives me a headache, plus it actually makes the screens look smaller than they really are. In any event, I am glad for theater-brand PLF. I have two of them near me and they give me a chance to see the biggest blockbusters on a large screen.

Well, I wouldn't pay extra, but yes, 2D PLF is best.

Here is my thought on paying extra. Three years ago when the first Avengers came out, my local theater had it playing on four screens. Three of them were large and 3D. The fourth screen was small and 2D. I paid $10 for a ticket to see that film opening night on a 20-30 foot wide screen. That's disappointing given the price.

Luckily Regal acquired the theater in 2013 and converted one screen to IMAX and the other to RPX. Both screens are very nice, 65 feet wide or so. Since IMAX is always 3D, they usually have all RPX showtimes in 2D as an alternative if it's the same movie. In the case of Minions, they had the RPX shows split between 2D and 3D because they were forced by their contract to show Terminator in IMAX. I bet they wish they could have put Minions in such a large auditorium instead of Terminator.

Yup, I've seen that happen from time to time.

There's an Edwards theater in Houston that has a pretty nice IMAX auditorium. When it opened, it was branded as IMAX, but for some reason, they took down all IMAX signage a few months afterwards. They've since branded it IMAX again, but obviously there was some sort of contract dispute.

Are you talking about the Edwards Marquee? That has been IMAX as far back as Batman Begins in 2005. Saw Begins, 300, TDK, Inception, Mission Impossible 4, and TDKR on that screen. The 70mm footage for TDK/MI4/TDKR was jawdropping.

That said, I think what Santikos has done with their AVX PLF at the Palladium theater in Richmond (near Sugarland) is amazing. It seemed to be similar size to the true 15/70 IMAX at Edwards Marquee, but the price is like $6 lower and there are 6 of these giant AVX screens instead of just one IMAX. That's a great deal for consumers.

Yup, Edwards Marquee. That theater's older than 2005.

Not much older though. Opened 2003. So that dispute you are talking about must have been resolved pretty fast.

It was open since at least 2001 because they showed Beauty and the Beast in IMAX.

Ha, maybe that 2003 date listed on various websites is when they re-branded the IMAX screen.

Btw, you'll be happy to hear that Lionsgate has changed its mind about 3D for Mockingjay Part 2 in the US. It'll be in 2D, even on IMAX screens.

Are they shooting any of it in IMAX? I would probably go for the IMAX show if they shoot some IMAX like Catching Fire. If not, I will probably still opt for 2D RPX. Mockingjay Part 1 was enjoyable in that format, plus it's about $2-3 cheaper than IMAX.

No, they shot Part 1 and Part 2 with digital cameras.

I've never been to an IMAX that had an up-charge for 3D. In California, Oregon, and Washington, it's all flat rate. My cross country friends report the same, too.

I've noticed that with the Bob Bullock IMAX in Austin, but the Cinemark in Dallas certainly upcharges for 3D. Maybe it depends on if IMAX is operating a theater or if another chain has licensed the brand.

IMAX is nothing compared to Dolby Cinema. Better picture and sound. I'll only go see IMAX films of they were shot and presented in the 70mm format.
