The Hobbit (though I believe 2D showings may have just be limited to museums/IMAX domes which couldn't play 3D in this case) and In the Heart of the Sea are WB films which split between 2D and 3D IMAX as well. I think Deathly Hallows Pt. 2 also, but too long ago to remember for sure there.

I wonder if there was a special director request for Civil War since that will have both 2D and 3D IMAX showings. And unlike WB, Disney usually goes 3D only in IMAX.

No official confirmation yet on the IMAX website or anything, but when I watched Batman V Superman in IMAX I got an X-Men: Apocalypse trailer with the "experience it in IMAX 3D" tag at the end, so it looks like we're getting a digital IMAX release for that.

Wikipedia says X-Men Apocalypse will get an IMAX release in select international territories. I don't think it will get a U.S. release, or one in many countries because the Alice in Wonderland sequel already booked IMAX at that time (the Apocalypse trailer said nothing about IMAX when I saw it with BvS)

Probably going to be a Internationals release only.

Been done a few times before by Warner. It does not happen very often.

And I liked the way Snyder handled the ratios- kept in IMAX format the whole time during its four scenes rather than cutting back and forth (though I could tell some of the times he snuck regular 70mm footage in there as a substitute when the IMAX camera wouldn't have worked).

I also thought, despite a number of problems, the movie was pretty good overall and an improvement on Man of Steel. May go again next week to see it in 70mm
I thought the movie looked great in IMAX. I saw it in reg digital IMAX with the overhead speakers.

LOL...who is? There is now 1000 IMAX Theatres all across the world. IMAX is doing great.

the Washington DC area's first AMC Prime / Dolby Cinema just opened over at Tyson's Corner (woot! woot!)

granted IMAX doesn't have a crystal ball, but theaters with IMAX screens are glad they only had to keep 'Gods of Egypt' and 'Divergent Series: Allegiant' (two critically mauled movies) for only a week - theaters that have specialty 'large' screens don't have to be wed to the IMAX bombs that occasionally pop up. That was the point in my comment.

To anyone who's seen both, how does Dolby's laser projection system compare to IMAX laser? Not really feeling like driving 45 minutes to the nearest AMC Prime if it's nothing special...

I'd think it would boil down to more about the audio than the image - Atmos is better (IMO) than 12-channel (IMAX-laser). I think HighDefDigest (or was it AVS) where someone did a comparison.

also aren't the DCP's for Dolby Cinema for 'Batman vs. Superman' 2K whereas I know for a fact the IMAX-laser DCP's are 4K.

Really? That's pretty strange. I was under the impression that both systems were 4K capable.

both systems are, but the DCP's that Deluxe are releasing to non-IMAX laser screens are 2K:

Image Format: 2048x858 2K Scope

BatmnVSupermn_FTR-1-2D_S_EN-XX-OCAP_US_71-HI-VI-Dbox_2K_WR_20160311_DTB_IOP_VF

which doesn't make a lot of sense when the DI work (according to American Cinematographer) denotes was done at 4K. I'm assuming the 3D'ing of the files bumped it down to 2K.

What would you say would be the best, demo-wise?

Atmos - since in that format sound can be placed just outside of the perimeter of the screen, and if you've got a theater that has five front channel sound - the music & sound effects can be spread horizontally to greater dimensional wider effect.

No it doesn't.

“The 35mm and IMAX camera negatives were developed at FotoKem, the former scanned at 2K resolution by Deluxe’s Film and the latter at 8K by FotoKem… The Final color grade was performed at 4K in Resolve…”

The takeaway being that 80% of the movie is 2K, and that the half hour of IMAX footage was downscaled from 8K to 4K.

That still says nothing of what the IMAX projection would have been, or what the DI master is, all we know is that at best it's 2K for 35mm, 4K for IMAX. Also, Dolby Cinema doesn't use regular DCP's, either.

oohhhh - didn't know that ... so how many DCP's are created for say a movie that goes out to standard theaters, Dolby Cinema, IMAX-digital and IMAX-laser? four?
