Really? I thought that was one of the features of the seats in Dolby Cinema auditoriums - as you can tell I'm not a fan of that aspect

I haven't heard anything about that, not that it mightn't be true (I don't pretend to know everything ) but the native ratio of the sensor itself is said to be 2.1:1 so a 1.90 would have to be cropped out of that, shirley? Then again, the regular Alexa captured 2.8K for a good few years before they opened up the aperture to use every last one of the photosites on the chip, resulting in a 3.4K 1.55:1 Open Gate mode, so something similar may well be the case with the 65.

I know that. What I'm saying is I thought IMAX might have tinkered with the camera a bit so that it outputs at 1.9:1 at the max instead of the typical 2.1:1 open gate from the regular Alexa 65.

I know IMAX claims it's 2,500:1 ratio for lasers is significantly better than 35mm and 15/70mm projection, which seems like a non-hyperbolic and fair rating (surprising, from IMAX), but all I can find for DV are those inflated numbers of 1,000,000 or 2,000,0000:1, nothing reasonable.
The 1,000,000:1 peak contrast for Dolby Cinema is based on sequential with modulation and HDR in a perfect environment.

The IMAX laser figure of 2,500:1 is based on intra-frame with sequential rumored to be around 8,000:1, which could be increased to 20,000:1 with iris. IMAX doesn't have HDR as of yet.

Plus, the Christie 6P are rumored to be operated differently to IMAX, with the second projector used for bright areas of the frame only, thereby increasing the intra-frame brightness.

Reports from those that have seen both state IMAX to have better colors (no prism, using the primaries directly in the DMD) and Dolby to have better contrast.

I miss the old domed IMAX theaters. Why can't we watch feature length films like that??

Being a 1.90:1 screen, I wonder what projector they are using.

Unfortunately, very few movies are made with true IMAX framed content.

The disappointing part is most people don't even care about quality, although I completely blame IMAX for not maintaining their brand integrity I also know people who rip songs off of YouTube at the lowest quality settings because it's the fastest.

Laser.

The speaker set up is weird (to me), due to the presence of a balcony.

I'm going to Charlotte next week and I think they have a dome IMAX theater. I wonder if it's worth it to see a film there. I've never been to a dome theater.

I wonder if any dome theater is still playing dome content. My friend watched Interstelllar in a dome IMAX theater and said it was a bit weird because the screen was so curved.

Did anyone here get to see Kubo and The Two Strings in Dolby Atmos? I thought it sounded wonderful in the regular theater I saw it and could only imagine how it would sound that way.

It's been a long time since I've heard a really stellar sounding movie in any theater, including Atmos. Everything just seems very very front heavy. The last time I actually remember noticing the rears doing freaking anything was when I watched The Revenant in IMAX and I could hear water behind me.

Possibly stupid question here, but speaking of surround sound; does anyone know if all IMAX Laser releases use 12-channel mixes, or just certain ones?

The Sydney IMAX, currently the world's largest screen, is closing next month until 2019 for a major redevelopment of the area. Sounds like a laser IMAX will be there when it reopens, but with such a major architectural change, who knows if dimensions will be the same.

BTW, other sites in major cities like Navy Pier in Chicago and Lincoln Square in NYC (just closed today) are now doing laser renovations and plan to reopen in time for the holiday season blockbusters. So, yeah, with those gone, 15/70 capability is even more limited than before to mostly just some museum sites.

I think all laser sites have the 12 channel mixes, but not all releases use them. Age of Ultron was first 12 channel mix and there were a number of laser releases prior, and while I believe 12 channel mixes are becoming pretty standard, as the number of laser locations has grow, Spectre for instance used just a traditional IMAX mix (and, as I said, I bet Dunkirk follows suit).

Still no sign of a laser install for the BFI IMAX in London though, very strange. At this rate it'll be the last 15/70 left standing by the time Dunkirk is released in just under a year's time.

Since Nolan is from London and the film centers on British soldiers, is it crazy to think he is telling IMAX not to convert BFI prior to Dunkirk? We can assume Nolan will host the world premiere in 15/70 and that seems like an ideal location, and obviously he wields a ton of influence at IMAX.

The thought did cross my mind, but it's extraordinarily selfish to tell one venue to keep to 15/70 just for him because of the paucity of such engagements, as for everything else bar the occasional Nolan (directed/produced) movie it's stuck at 2K digital.
