The new 4K/3D/120 fps format will have its public unveiling on Oct 14th with World Premiere of Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk at Lincoln Square as part of the New York Film Festival, though will be on a relatively small screen unfortunately. Apparently there will be very few (maybe single digits) theaters capable of that format worldwide (indeed while Lincoln Square is only a few blocks away from normal NYFF screenings, this is a special arrangement as they are not affiliated and normal never do NYFF showings), though the plan is to have more screens which can do 3D/4K/60 fps (apparently IMAX laser can do this but an IMAX release for Billy Lynn has yet to be confirmed) or 2D/4k/120 fps. |

The cinemas with Barco Alchemy can do up to 120 fps 2k 3D (60 fps per eye) or 60 fps 4k 3D (30 fps per eye).
The screening at NYFF is using a modified Christie 4k projector that does 240 fps 4k 3D (120 fps per eye). I doubt there exist any commercial theaters that are capable of that. |

From what I understand, few if any sites will keep a 15/70 projector after going laser. But it could be a sign the Johnson theater will stay with 15/70 until after Dunkirk, particularly as the Smithsonian already has laser on its other two IMAXes. |

So the Blair Witch TV spots have the AMC Prime, Dolby Cinema, Regal RPX, Cinemark XD, Carmike Big D, and Marcus UltraScreen logos. Seems like kind of an odd choice to put a low-budget found-footage horror flick on a PLF screen to me... granted it might do decent business just because of the added showtimes if there's enough demand, but unless the ONLY practical time is a PLF showtime I can't imagine I'll bother parting with the extra cash.
I know my local Cinemark showed The Visit on their XD screen last September. I guess they don't have that many great options in early fall. |

https://mobile.twitter.com/IMAX/stat...04839774216192 Also with the IMAX at Lincoln Square closed for laser renovation, IMAX went and installed equipment at Alice Tully Hall four blocks away (primarily a concert hall and which never does commercial movie runs, though does host many New York Film Festival screenings) just to be able to host the premiere in IMAX. I look forward to seeing Sully this weekend and trying to spot the little bit (supposed to be like a minute of the runtime) not shot in Digital IMAX, as presumably that will be 2.35 to the vast majority of the film in 1.9 |

Does anyone know if Sully has an expanded aspect ratio for the IMAX version? This came to my inbox in an email from the Smithsonian.
"Clint Eastwood filmed 95% of Sully with ALEXA IMAX 65mm cameras. At Smithsonian IMAX Theaters the entire film will expand vertically to fill more of the screen delivering 26% more image than standard theaters. Experience the film the way it was meant to be seen- in IMAX." |

Saw Sully in IMAX, the credits scene is the only thing clearly not filmed in IMAX, though I spotted a couple shots here and there which looked like they may not have been as well.
A couple interesting things about the presentation are that it had a semi unique IMAX countdown mentioning it was shot with IMAX cameras and mastered for IMAX screens, though since nothing about the countdown was Sully specific, think it might be the countdown for IMAX shot films going forward (also included shot with IMAX cameras and specifically formatted for IMAX screens logos in the credits). I noticed that the dialogue scenes seemed framed more with 2.35 in mind and looked to be unneeded vertical space, but in the flying scenes or cityscape shots, I found the extra vertical space was well accounted for and it added to those scenes. One other nice little thing was the movie's screenwriter was there and brought like 20 of his friends (first noticed this when there was a bit of applause for Eastwood but then a huge applause and "Yay Todd" when the screenplay credit came up) and he was talking to people on the way out and could congratulate him on the movie. |

I think the Alexa digital cameras are probably the best digital cameras around and the Alexa 65mm has gotten some great images already, but yes it still can't match the old IMAX film cameras (really nothing in either film or digital cameras can).
Still, feel its wrong to say it wasn't shot in IMAX when the camera has been officially endorsed by IMAX and repeatedly marketed as such. Even if you don't like it, digital capture is clearly going to be the vast majority of movie shooting going forward (film capture could possibly even go away completely, which would certainly be sad to me) and this is IMAX's digital solution. |
