Tickets are currently on sale for Rogue One at Lincoln Square IMAX through January 4th, and I wouldn't be surprised if it plays longer than that.

I also love that this Dolby Cinema has a huge scope screen, so no letterboxing, which is great. I'm seeing it in IMAX Laser next week back in Virginia but I don't think anything will come close to matching what I just saw.
Glad you liked it!

I thought Dolby Vision was 2D only?

I've stated this prior but I would never would want to see a 2.76 movie on a 4:3 screen.

that's the amount of black bordering you'd seen on a 4:3 IMAX screen.

Now when I saw a reissue of this in 70mm at the Uptown Washington DC theater - the curtain unfurled horizontally to amazing dramatic effect revealing more and more of the screen. (since the screen is constant height) For those who don't know this the Uptown used to be a Cinerama theater hence why the screen at that time was masked off for flat and standard scope films.

~

it's too bad, IMAX are not allowing theaters to pick and choose whether or not to showcase 'Rogue One' in 3D or 2D - the latter would be 4K, whereas IMAX-laser 3D is still stuck at 2K resolution.

I think the only number of DV screens in the entire US is under five screens.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the IMAX Laser system use dual 4K Projectors with sub-pixel alignment? Wouldn't that mean we'd have one 4K image for each eye for 3D viewings and about 8K for 2D showings?

yes the system is comprised of two 4K projectors but i thought 3D encoding was stil bound to the limitations of 2K - or has that changed?

Remember that IMAX do their own separate DCPs to their own specs, so they're not bound by the same restrictions as standard DCPs. This applies to 3D as well as 2D, and AFAIK 4K 3D is not a problem for their laser projection system.

BUT obviously they're not going to spend millions of dollars re-rendering VFX shots etc so if a film is finished in 2K 3D then it's finished in 2K 3D. But if/when 4K 3D finishes become a thing for standard exhibition then IMAX will be well placed to take advantage of them. [edit] As well as their own bespoke features, as Spike points out below ↓

It's bound to a 2K limit on a DCP machine, but IMAX does their own thing. I'm fairly certain IMAX laser is capable of 4K 3D, if not then my eyes are definitely deceiving me after seeing A Beautiful Planet in that format.

GLaDOS, you're right that two projector systems designate an "eye" to each projector, right and left. However, when playing content in 2D, the pixels are simply projected on top of each other to increase the brightness of the image. It's still "just" 4K.

It's not 8K in the same way that actual 8K is measured, as two overlapped 4K images still represent only half the pixels of a true 8K image. It's best to think of IMAX's dual-aligned system (which they use for 2K digital as well as 4K laser) as doubling the pixel density, which is essential if they're to avoid the 'screen door' effect of spreading too many pixels across far too big of a screen.

And given how so many people are wowed by the 2K digital presentation at the BFI it's a method that's not entirely without merit. I've seen several 2K movies there and not once did I see any visible pixels or other such digital greeblies.

In bright 2D scenes (white), heck, even the DLP logo in the beginning, I can see the SDE of IMAX 2K anywhere in the front 2/3 of the room.

3D though, I sit SUPER close, 2 rows behind the split. Love it.

Heh. I guess that's why I sit a few rows from the back, then.

I feel bad for anyone having to sit so close to the screen THAT BIG because everyone else got the far back seats.

Dolby Vision has always had a 3D option and it's apparently been fairly commonplace in Europe but we didn't hear much about it in the States because AMC, which operates most of the Dolby Vision screens in the USA, initially pledged that they would only show 2D in their Dolby Cinema rooms. That started to change with the live action The Jungle Book - AMC booked the Dolby Vision 3D version into two of their Dolby Cinema rooms in NYC and Chicago as an experiment. I guess they must have liked the results because they booked the Dolby Vision 3D version of Rogue One into most of their Dolby Cinema rooms, the 2D Dolby Vision version is harder to find.

It's expanded rapidly this year. AMC itself has about 40 Dolby Cinema screens operating now with another 10+ set to open in the near future. They've announced plans to convert 100+ screens to Dolby Cinema.

Heh. It's Europe which has less than five DV screens, last time I checked.

Sorry I should have clarified that, the number of 3D Dolby Cinema screens is rare -the current screens are 2D playback only

AMC Tysons Corner is '2D' Dolby Cinema

Any chance of this season Oscar contenders getting PLF and/or IMAX releases? Stuff like La La Land, Silence, Patriot's Day, etc. I know Rogue One get the jump on those formats this season the same way The Force Awakens did, but something like The Revenant was able to snag a couple of large format screens while TFA was making the moolah.

La La Land is going into the own-brand PLF at my local multiplex, which is nice considering it has a Dolby Atmos mix.

Actually surprised that AMC booked "La La Land" on the Dolby Cinema screen at Georgetown (Washington DC) guess too many screens were booked showing "Rogue One"
