I imagine because most people don't care that much about black bars.

of course i got over it because watching a movie in its original aspect ratio is the only true way to enjoy a movie, that being said...

i totally dont mind them now i have a 46" widescreen, because the viewable area is so much bigger

just my 2 cents
I'm a little bit like you. When I still had a 4:3 TV, I couldn't stand watching 2.35:1 ratio because the screen became way too small. Because I understood about the different aspect ratios and director intent, what I would do was still buy the OAR for future consideration, but I would zoom in one notch to reduce the black bars size. I did not mind thin black bars of 1.85:1. I think wanting to fill completely the screen is kind of anal, but to each their own.

What was the point? Well for one, vertical black bars on a 16:9 TV are much thinner than on a 4:3 TV, therefore it was a reason to buy a widescreen TV. Once I got my HDTV, the black bars were thin enough to not bother me anymore and I am now glad that I avoided buying fullscreen DVDs.

15 pages worth of posts says otherwise....

Also add John Q., it's 1:85:1

No prob!

Actually have a few more to add:

American Gangster - 1.85:1
Baby Mama - 1.85:1
Courage Under Fire - 1.85:1
The Fly - 1.85:1 (this site says 2.35:1 but that is incorrect)
Kit Kittredge: An American Girl - 1.78:1
Kitaro - 1.85:1
Lonesome Dove - 1.78:1
Primal Fear - 1.78:1 (this site and many others say 1.85:1, but it shows up as 1.78:1 on my display)
Zack & Miri Make a Porno - 1.78:1 (same issue here)

Edit: Removed one already on the list that I didn't notice.

That is the animated movie just released this year. And it's pretty good! I mean, I enjoyed it. I just wish it was longer. It's only a little over an hour.

Because some people can't "accept", they have to "ignore" or "avoid" movies with a wide AR.

I read a while ago that Warner Bros. were reluctant to enhance their 1.66:1 titles and were still releasing them in standard letterbox. What's up with that? A classic title such as ""Giant" needs to have an updated release. Warner needs to keep up with technology.

1.66:1 titles are pillarbox, not letterbox.

And what do you mean by "enhance"? Anamorphic DVDs? What does that have to do with anything?
