Default LG demos concept 8K TV at IFA

LG pushes 4K OLED at IFA, demos concept 8K TV!

Yes we don't have any 4k Blu-ray's but that doesn't stop LG from showing off a 98" 8K display with 16x resolution of a 1080P display.
Quote:
Although LG could mass-produce it in a year, a representative told me, without any 8K content available, the company will wait until the market is further along in its adoption of 4K before deciding what to do with the technology. The TV on show is an LCD panel with a resolution of 7,680x4,320 pixels.

It uses most of the same tech that's in LG's other LCD TVs, with four of the image processors from its 4K TVs required to produce the high-resolution image (a future model will need just one processor).

LG was playing a pretty basic video when I saw the concept set, with no fast motion or anything too hard to process, but the detail on the image was as rich as you'd expect from something with "16 times the resolution of full HD".

Sadly I see 4k being skipped and the industry moving right to 8k, to fully make use of 8k tho what distances and minimum screen size are we looking at here for this to be feasible.

Screw feasibility!! This is going to make Blu-ray look like VHS video!!!

I'm actually glad that we are finally getting to 8k! Why? Well, because that leaves the industry to stop worrying about "resolution" and concentrate on other things that are important to picture quality like, contrast, black levels, OLED, HDR, energy efficiency, mobility, weight, quantum Pixels....

One thing I'm glad about higher resolutions are company's manufacturing larger size TV's and bringing down the prices for all TV sizes!!!

BTW, how do you make a thread??? It seems I can only post....

Not necessary. I don't even plan on sitting closer than 4' so I can notice any kind of difference with 4k.

Feasibility is pretty important at certain distances and screen size you wont notice a difference between 1080P, 4k and 8K. 8K is what IMAX displays in at theaters I believe. So I can imagine screens 70" or bigger would be able to take advantage of this.

To create a thread you need like 10 posts on the forum.

Don’t get sad, for if 4K is a storage and bandwidth ‘hog’ for the production and delivery pipeline as evidenced by the relative paucity of 4K content despite the availability of the basic 4K tools for years, then think of an 8K pipeline as an Entelodont….

UHD (4K) phase 1 or phase 2 is a done deal.

There is actually 5k that's already available as a stop between 8k!

One is a Samsung Ultra-Widescreen TV with a resolution of 5,120x2,160 pixels (11MP) and another is the just announced 27" Dell monitor, with a resolution of 5120×2880 218 ppi (15MP) half the resolution of 8k! Coming out this Holiday with a price tag of $2500, street price could be lower!

BTW, 4k Blu-ray has been announced to become available by the end of 2015!!!

Warrior, I don’t think you understand the significance of the phrase “the production and delivery pipeline”.

I do know the difference , your point? I'm just bringing up discussion about upcoming products in the next few month's and your chewing my ass about it?

BTW, Dell is also releasing a 55" TV/Monitor, with the same 5k resolution as the 27" Monitor.

Sorry , I didn’t mean for it to come off that way. The point was that 8K chews up an awful lot of bandwidth, not to mention the infrastructure from acquisition onto delivery is pre-embryonic. If you want all those other picture quality things (like bit depth, HDR, HFR, WCG), best to use the bandwidth for that and 4K rez…before even thinking about increasing spatial rez to 8K.

He wasn't and I didn't think it came across in that way, he was pointing out the key phrase in his statement referring to the irrelevance of what the TV's specs are.

No harm, no foul.

Yes, in fact I love Warrior’s enthusiasm for advanced technology, I really do Warrior but, I just didn’t want to get his hopes up prematurely with 8K or especially have him decide to skip 4K altogether and wait…and wait…for an 8K infrastructure to be built. A little perspective….it’s been 10 years since any post house developed the capability to handle a 4K DI and 4K filmout with a feature motion picture production, and in those 10 years (minus at most a couple dozen restorations which aren’t yet on the lists), this is what we have in the vaults to show for it….

Honestly, not a boastful % of the total number of feature-length motion pictures produced for over the 10 years. Other than a lot of publicity coming out of Japan, worldwide broadcast of 8K will also prove an enormous challenge due to the bandwidth involved.

Anyway, as to the new Dell 5K display though, unless they’re requiring the use of two DisplayPort connections simultaneously and essential stitching two ~ 2.5K x 2.8K images together, I really don’t know *how* Dell is achieving that rez because as far as I know NVIDIA video cards top out at 4096 x 2160.
