The only caveat I have with this is that, if there is indeed an HD source for Dangerous Days, as there supposedly is, and the doc is still housed on its own BD, I see no reason why Warner COULDN'T be doing it in HD this time. Yes, it would require a new encode, but it's not *impossible*, even with the disc configurations that are being reported.

DD in HD was only ever a rumour which came from only one place which has had its own issues with veracity of late. Cling to it by all means, if it turns out to be true then I'll eat heaps of crow (pass the hot sauce) and rejoice with the rest of y'all, if not then I'll say the obvious and move on. cgpublic's last post on the previous page, the bumpf for the cinema screening he's referencing speaks of a "new 4K restoration". Or perhaps it's just the first outing for the Final Cut restoration to actually BE in 4K, as the DCPs of yesteryear were all 2K. |

Yeah, it's a bit misleading. I'm guessing since Alamo utilizes Sony Digital Studio, it will be a 4K digital projection. In fairness to Alamo, and you can correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm assuming the screenings for The Final Cut ten years ago were sub-4k, so this will be the first time you can see Blade Runner at 4K in a theater.
What would be very cool is the Alamo getting an early seed of Sony's new digital projectors with HDR, so the theatrical would provide the same HDR mastering as the UHD disc. When I last chatted them up, they said likely but no timetable. So, fingers crossed. |

Theatrical HDR doesn't have a great deal in common with home HDR (theatrical DV is 108 nit, home DV is 4000 nit) but it would still be mucho cool to see it in 4K HDR in the cinema.

I'm continually surprised at which classic films I get the most out of on the big screen. Some of them that I thought would be just fantastic, like E.T. or Raiders were just okay (though the 2012 Indiana Jones Marathon at AMC was maybe the single BEST time I've ever had in a movie theater), while others like Blade Runner and The Godfather were SO much better in a theater. I mean, Blade Runner has some stunning shots, but for the most part, it's a very quiet, contemplative movie. I felt that the theatrical experience really allowed me to get lost in that world more thoroughly. I saw the FC in 2007, and it was just an amazing experience from beginning to end. Ditto with The Godfather. I wouldn't have thought that one would matter at all on the big screen, but it was maybe the biggest difference from a home experience I've ever had.

in all fairness to the prior 2K DCP - that was damn impressive what I saw on AFI Silver's 4K Christie projector system - but I'm assuming the 4K DCP is going to look even more fantastic. What really surprised me was that I was hearing audio cues I had never heard before, in a THX certified auditorium, sound and music yielded and produced strong aural reactions.

If Alamo Drafthouse is right, maybe Warner's has ditched it's 2K DCP's and have encoded new ones in 4K. I've seen the 4K's of 'Excalibur' and 'The Iron Giant' and it would make sense that Warner's would clean out the old, bring in the new - this isn't uncommon with Sony who has culled and theatrically released 4K DCP's of a number of movies (Bridge on the River Kwai, The Fifth Element notably) over the last couple of years.

Well that is just over twice as bright, allowing for quite some headroom for highlights and color luminance. And add to that the drastically improved contrast (a place where 99.9% of theaters absolutely SUCK). So in a lot of ways it is a bigger improvement in theaters than it is at home.

You do realize however that nits are measured for every square meter? 120 nits on a 100" screen is four times as bright as 120 nits on a 50" screen. In other words, 4000 nits on a big screen is kind of... Yeah, not so attractive.

You get an incredibly deep black with plenty of shadow detail. The colors also "pop" more. Going from IMAX Force Awakens to DV in the same night was a revelation from the opening starfield with the yellow text. The black of space, the bright pinpoint stars and the bright yellow text against it in DV...there was a huge difference in the IMAX version where space turned to a dark grey in comparison. |

I was asking similar questions in the GOTG V2 thread.
I wasn't sure how HDR was compared between home and theater. But I knew that the screen size, as well as the specific-made projectors that Dolby needed, would still feature a better HDR presentation in theater than what you get at home. A monitor will always be brighter than a projector, but I can't deny that I've much preferred the Dolby Cinema HDR experience compared to what I get at home. It probably helps that Dolby covers significantly more color volume as well. |
