But I never saw it as only being there to shock, even though in 1982 that word was more shocking. It just works better in context to the entire line "I want more life, f***er.".

By saying "I want" he's signifying that he exists, he recognizes himself as an individual as opposed to a product, and he has a desire to continue living - all things that are human qualities. It references DeCartes but takes it into the modern, and adding the emphatic expletive to the end of that emphasizes that he feels emotion about knowing he will die.

Now if you put "father" at the end of that instead it completely changes the tone, takes away the agency from Roy and makes him purely suppliant. How can a father give more life tha he already has anyway? That's the central question, yes, but that's only possible if you take "Father" to mean "God".

I understand this is probably what Scott wants the viewer to think about with this change. My issue is exactly that - that it completely changes the original intention of the line and shifts the meaning, or at least the viewers' "reading" of it, to something else. It sends Roy in there "on his knees" as opposed to simply going there to let Tyrell know of his recognized agency and bring Tyrell to his knees instead.

Default BLADE RUNNER Screening: LOS ANGLES NOVEMBER, 2019, Los Angeles

Just saw a screening of Blade Runner @The Vista in Los Angeles last Saturday to commemorate the date and city the film was set in. It was the Final Cut and it looked gorgeous. The editor, Marsha Nakashima, did a Q&A afterwards. I took my son who was 13. I'm probably the worst parent for doing so. He told me later he was scarred for life, half-jokingly. For some reason I blanked on the nail through the hand scene, and I've seen this film at least twenty times. BTW, I prefer the line" I want more life "fckr" over father, which comes across as a bit pretentious. Then again, Roy Batty is not one to shy away from waxing poetic when he speaks.

Conversely, there’s a sense of conflict, of deep love and respect in Roy for his creator fighting against pure, immature and all-consuming rage at him, running through that scene that is better reinforced by the “father” line, then capped off perfectly by the performance choice to have Roy cry in self-disgust and horror as he carries out patricide.

It’s simpler than that. “I want more life fckr” are the words I grew up with watching this film as a kid into adulthood. Changing the words is like changing the lyrics to a song after you released a hit. No no no I don’t mean beat it, I meant eat it, eat it eat it. Now if I heard the lyrics wrong and someone said no no no, it’s not “blinded by the light, wrapped up like a douche in the middle of the night,” it’s “revved up like a Duece.” Then I would still have trouble adjusting but concede to my poor yet humorous listening skills. But in the case of Blade Runner I have the original record, with the lyric sheet printed on the album sleeve. I got it right the first time.

Not to mention the word doesn’t really match Batty’s lips. If I’m not mistaken, I think they cut away right before he finishes the sentence.

In fact it would be more apropos to say “Sir Ridley, Deckard is not a replicant as much as you try to make him one. No one in the creative process agrees with you sir. Not Harrison Ford, not the screenwriters. So stop fiddling with your movie and leave well enough alone ‘fckr’.

Yeah, but that's not quite what Roy does either, with the short but thoughtful conversation on replicant science and what Tyrel has or hasn't yet tried in the lab (that hasn't give rise to something). Roy was there to ask about those things, and I always thought it a genuine quest for knowledge (as if Roy had done his science homework).

I see the needle bobbing around the center between 'father' and fooker.

I for the longest time couldn't decide wether Rick was a human or a Replicant, However with the multiple scenes such as the dream of the Unicorn, the Origami Unicorn and Gaff trailing Deckard all the time rather than partnering with him would suggest he's tasked with making sure Rick operates properly. Then he lets Rick and Rachel get away... If you were tasked with deciding whether or not you and your fellow workers were replaceable with non human Replicants then wouldn't you be more apt to allow them to fail so that you and others could keep your jobs? I was more in the Human Deck Camp but for the last decade I'm a Deckarep believer. 2049 might not be accepted by a fraction of Bladerunner fans but even that movie lends itself to Rick being a Replicant. And Ridley is the Universe builder, I take his word on it also on a separate note, Father is a better choice than F***** in Batty's conversation with his creator. Anyone capable of creating the Tears in rain speech is classy enough to have called their creator Father rather than a derogatory term for sex...just my opinion

Watched this last night for my Thanksgiving picture.

Would not have been able to live with myself if I had passed on the opportunity to watch it in the month of November, 2019.

Poor JF Sebastian...why did you not slowly back away toward the elevator while Roy was talking to Tyrell?

Rest In Peace my little gland-compromised genetic designer.

It scares me to think of what he did with those toys late at night, when no one was watching.

...even a lonely man has needs.

I really don't wanna watch Blade Runner again for a while. I could probably speak over almost every single line. But there are only two days left in November 2019. Ugh.

Well, good responses and I do respect opinions that see it differently. There's certainly compelling arguments for both. I do wonder if there's a correlation between those who prefer "f***er" w/ Deckard is human and those who prefer "father" w/ Deckard is replicant?

In other news, my 4K set hasn't made it here from France yet so I might have to watch my HD-DVD set to see it this month. But maybe my brain will just shut down in disbelief that it's actually November 2019 right now.

Well, this watch made me feel like I should have spent more money and gone with a 5.2.4/7.2.2 receiver instead of a 5.2.2/7.2.0. It just sounds wrong, a car flying overhead and then, as it leaves the screen, panning to the surround.

Also, "****er" sounds trashy from Roy.

Edit: Wait, HOW much are full Atmos receivers?!!! Jesus Christ. Edit: Actually, the 9 channel Onkyo TX-NR797 is priced okay. I like my Onkyo TX-NR575. Maybe in a few months.

Quite the opposite, I would say. You're showing him the classics they way they need to be seen: on the big screen.

I was 13 when I saw the film in the summer of '82. Some went over my head, but man did I love it.

Just for fun, someone should do a poll: Deckard Human or Replicant. Maybe a short synopsis of the reasons and the scenes that led you to your conclusion
