WB could have done a whole lot more for the "35th Anniversary" than a sticker on the slipcover, but alas, they made more subtractions than additions.

Just wait for the 40th anniversary, when WB reissue the same old discs but throw in some new tat to appease us.

And I'll buy it day one because I'm a slave to capitalism.

Just got done talking to amazon customer support. They don't have anymore copies in stock to replace my damaged case, so they just gave me a full refund and are letting me keep the damaged one. Are the Viva Elite cases meant to fit two discs on each spindle? Taht how my copy of blade runner is and I don't want the thicker one with the tray, since the artwork won't fit a bigger case properly.

We've had suitcases, spinners, origami unicorns, blasters, whiskey glasses (for 2049), that terrible Titans of Cu*t steelbook, I'm wondering what else they've got left tat-wise.

Its 40th is only two years away though so you know Warners will cook up something. God, I'd kill to have this re-issued with a new encode and the OG final cut 5.1 audio, though we also know that's not gonna happen.

Snake scales, Leon's precious photos, and a handwritten note from Sean Young chastising Ridley Scott for killing Rachael off in 2049.

Not fish, snake scale! It better have the right serial number when viewed on an electron microscope though or there'll be hell to pay.

Hopefully they'll provide five different versions of said snake scale.

One thing that would be cool is to have the archival versions presented as their own, original versions.

By that I mean that on the BD, they're seamlessly branched (a feature removed for UHD for some reason- all UHDs that have multiple cuts use playlist swapping) and conformed to one version with one colour grade, rather than the original colour grade each version had. If you compare, for example, the Criterion LD of the European Theatrical cut (that added in those shots of violence cut by the MPAA) and the Warner LD of the Director's cut (I own the latter), in addition to the edits made between them, the colour grade is a bit different. It could be due to any number of reasons- Warner had better sources than Criterion when they made their LD, so that may count for some, but it's possible that the colour grade was altered by Scott, Cronenweth (the DP) or someone else.

Doubt they will, but it would make for a cool addition (hopefully with enhanced BDs using MPEG-4 AVC and average more than 15-20 mbps).

Does that achieve the same thing in practice though, prof? That it's not two entirely separate encodes of the same thing but is basically 'seamlessly' playing a bunch of different files depending on what version you pick?

Personally I'm not too hung up on the grading of a 30 year old disc as Scott changes his mind every single time he oversees a new transfer of one of his movies. Just having the three 'archival' versions branched/playlisted onto one UHD disc (a la the Blu-ray) with OG audio would be an awesome thing, no need to overcomplicate it.

Maybe? I'm not sure. My boss made a tweet listing off the features dropped on UHD from BD- more than you'd think, actually.

Eh, most of those are no great loss. If getting rid of stuff like PiP (for which the secondary audio has caused FAR more problems than it'll ever solve) is what it took to get UHD out there then I'm not sorry.

But I see yourself wondering out loud how they can do these multiple versions if they're not branching them in that tweet you replied with.

[edit] And from looking further into the thread I see Justin calls this playlist thingy "regular branching". I mean, if it makes no difference to the end viewer then what is the difference? We even get the same playback artefacts with this "regular branching" like audio dropouts in TrueHD bitstreams over HDMI with some players' chipsets, so to all intents and purposes it's the same thing, only much easier to implement.

IIRC Lionsgate started using playlist obfuscation to deter pirates (good luck with that) where they'd split the movie encode into loads of little .m2ts files and put like a thousand playlists on there, and you had to pick the right playlist otherwise the ripped file was a jumbled mess. It wasn't creating a separate version of the film so I guess that was where this "regular branching" first started to be put to heavy use, but as it now worked 'seamlessly' on Blu (noted chipset issues with TrueHD bitstreaming aside) where on DVD it resulted in a noticeable pause then they musta quietly dropped the other branching for UHD.

You think they'll pay for a real snake?

Course not. Do you think they could afford a real snake?

That's the 50th anniversary you're talking about. Or did they push that back to the 75th now?

The 40th anniversary edition will also have a new audio commentary by Harrison Ford ranting about how Deckard isn't a replicant.

Wow, I'm not so big on Funko Pops but I hope this means we might finally get proper action figures from the first film by NECA.

Hot Toys needs to do 1/6 figures of the entire cast. My wallet will cry but my shelves will orgasm.

It's only fair, Ridley Scott got his commentary where he spells out how Deckard is a replicant.

Or just a bonus supplement of Ridley and Harrison sitting across from each other and just continuously arguing/debating on why Deckard is or isn’t a replicant! Yes we’ve seen them express their views on the subject separately but never together. Could be an entertaining video.

The answer to whether or not Deckard is a replicant is pretty obvious. I don't think we need a discussion between Scott and Ford.
