It also tricks a lot of viewers who don't even realize how they are automatically writing off any A.I. being as just programming and not human, sort of showing how it was that in the original BR many humans so easily ended up overlooking any Replicant humanity.

(although shockingly a few seemed to somehow entirely this huge foundational point in BR2049, like the sci-fi reviewer team Adam Savage. They even are apparently so big deal that they were invited on set and yet still seemed to miss like 80% of the major points of the movie. I couldn't believe when all but one of their review team said the whole K/Joi 'sub-plot' was a waste that could've just been trimmed to bring the movie length way down. How do you trim a key mirroring expansion point of the original BR plot???? That was as much the point of the movie as anything else. And how do you want to trim Ana de Armas out of anything??? Heck, just delete her from Knives Out as well, what was the point of her in that too? Just slows down the film. )

Yes, I'm sure. The movie is merely competent, some of it good, but overall unremarkable, while believing itself to be important in a way that doesn't even feel noir (like the original). I was also bothered by how it connected with the original (making such a big deal out of Rachel and Deckard) and found the soundtrack overly oppressive and bland.

I think I also dislike Ryan Gosling. He just has a boring, bored prettyboy face.

Ana de Armas was the best thing in 2049 and Knives Out. She's stellar in Knives Out, which I enjoyed more than 2049, and that's saying something as I saw both twice in the theater, which is a rarity.

Agreed, actually. I didn't think of that one because I hadn't seen any of the other Mad Max films prior to seeing Fury Road. I went back and watched the three Mel Gibson ones afterwards. I think I like Road Warrior and Fury Road equally, then probably the original, with Beyond Thunderdome being my least favorite, though I still liked it.

Doctor Sleep was also mentioned. I liked that one as well-- reminds me that I still need to watch the director's cut.

I grew up with the theatrical cut on VHS, and then got the director's cut sometime in the mid-90s. While I suppose I prefer the ending of the director's cut (which was used on the subsequent Final Cut), I miss the narration of the theatrical. Whenever the subject of Ford's narration comes up, I'm the black sheep who actually likes it. Perhaps it's because I've always been a big fan of the hard boiled detective noir genre, and I thought of Deckard like a futuristic Sam Spade or something. Most people say I'm crazy for that, but I don't care. Hahaha

And I quite enjoyed 2049. I still much prefer the original, but then, the original is one of my all time favorite movies. But I saw 2049 twice in the theater, and it'd been years since I had done that, so I guess I liked it a lot. Some of it was a bit off, it's certainly not a perfect movie, but there's just something about the atmosphere of it that I find really captivating. I like that Villeneuve did his own thing with it, but it also retained that Blade Runner feel throughout. I think I'm due to watch it again. And I recently picked up the 4k at a 2nd hand shop. I smell a double feature in the near future.

You're in for a treat. It is, without a doubt, one of the best looking UHDs currently available. Enjoy!

Yup. He and Fancher worked on the script for a couple of years. Officer K was Fancher's invention, I believe, from a short story he wrote, but I think the plot mechanic that basically kickstarts the film - the discovery of Rachael's bones, and the subsequent search for both the offspring and Deckard - was Scott's.

I'm glad he didn't direct it in the end, though. I'm sure it would've looked stunning, but he would've chopped significant character moments in order to get that all-important two hour runtime.

I liked the narrations as well, especially in the scene on the rooftop with Batty.

Ana is a breath of fresh air in her acting (and of course pleasant on the eyes). Too bad they cut quite a few of Joi's scenes from 2049. She was the next step beyond replicants in a growing AI sentience. That would have been something cool to explore. Kind of like the holo Doc on Star Trek: Voyager... I may be a computer construct, but I believe I am alive, so therefore I probably am alive and deserve better treatment.

The replicant story was starting to become stale in the sense that anyone watching with half a brain and reading skills knew that a replicant was a bio-engineered and enhanced human and they just didn't have any rights because they were grown in a lab fully adult (hence the manufactured dreams and memories) rather than birthed from a womb as a baby.

I've always liked the narration, every now and then I fire up the ol' international theatrical cut for a viewing. When I was a kid I actually transcribed the voiceover on a typewriter, I think I still have that piece of paper somewhere.

Would I lose anything if I bought the 5-disc set + the Final Cut UHD? The OOP UK special edition UHD is pretty expensive right now

There's a photo gallery on the 30th Anniversary set that wasn't on the 5-disc one.

Also, you'd be missing the better encode and lossless audio for the Workprint (although the source was in rough shape to start with, so it doesn't make that much difference).

I think you'd have everything else, though.

To be fair, I believe it does play in the credits for that anime prequel short. So you may have been confusing it with that.

Yep. Last year I showed my stepdad Blade Runner for the first time and just for the hell of it I showed him the theatrical version. Both of us didn’t mind the narration. We actually felt it gave it an old school detective movie feel.

My name is Luke Dodge, and I'm a 4K addict.

I've (we've) finally joined the 4K world! We picked up a 65" 4K Samsung Crystal (7000) and the first thing I had to watch was Blade Runner. Since it was released on 4K I have been salivating to put this in and enjoy. I was Blown. Away. Even my girlfriend was kinda speechless, and she didn't want to watch Blade Runner. But she stopped telling me to turn it off once the spinners were in the air. I was giddy. We came off of a 9 year old 42" Vizio 1080. Served us well, but I've been buying 4K for several years, and now we can finally watch. I'm picking up a soundbar and speakers next; doing research now. And I'm looking for a region free 4K bluray player.

But getting back to the movie, it was flawless. I was sitting there just looking at every single light source, character and their hair, eyes, rain drops! This movie was the one I knew I would upgrade to 4K for.

If you want to continue being speechless with your movie going experience... please do not even consider a soundbar. Do yourself a favor and build up a REAL home theater audio system.

BD 2049 is THUNDEROUS and you need a half-way decent Dolby Atmos setup with subs that can plumb the depths to really appreciate the audio mix. Why get some puny soundbar that will only sound like a fart in a windstorm?
