One would hope so. Still, it’s pretty harsh killing the harmless disabled recluse who just did you a favour. Did Batty kill him because he witnessed the murder, or because he could identify Batty and Pris, or because he participated in the creation of Nexus 6’s?

Blade Runner continues to be the one vexing movie that makes me contradict all my usual "up-on-a-soapbox" opinions.

USUAL OPINION:
I'm a purist who loves -- almost exclusively -- originally theatrical cuts of movies. When presented on all our modern formats, I prefer those movies to be "messed around with" as little as possible. I absolutely ALWAYS gravitate toward original audio, and I can't stand when directors go back decades later (when they're entirely different people) and tinker with their work.

BUT THEN THERE'S BLADE RUNNER:
Never got into the 1982 cut when I was growing up in the 80's, but saw the 1992 director's cut in theaters (when I was in college) and freakin' fell in LOVE with it. That was it, for me; I had no doubt that would be the ONLY cut I'd ever watch again, forever and forever.....

UNTILLLL...

Gotta admit, I tried to hold the line with the excellent Blu-ray of the director's cut, and I continued to hold that line all the way through the Blu-ray release of the Final Cut 'cuz I couldn't stand all the teal. But when this de-tealed UHD came out I fell in love all over again. Yup, I love the wire removal of the spinners (contradiction!!!) and the face replacements of Deckard and Zhora (contradiction!!!) and the re-compositing of all the amazing matte paintings (contradiction!!!) and yes... gasp... even the new mix (heresy!! contradiction!!)

Go figure. At least it makes me feel like all my other "purist tendencies" are indeed "pure", since I obviously have the capacity to enjoy revisionist stuff when I actually "like" it. <shrug>

I always figured it was partly down to Sebastian being a witness (after all, he could easily contact the LAPD and be like, 'Ohai, I've got two replicants in my residence, lol'), but mostly I think he killed Sebastian for the same reason he killed Tyrell - Batty was a big baby lashing out because he didn't get what he wanted.

Batty's life was already over after his talk with his creator. No need to get rid of witnesses anymore. He killed Sebastian because he's a dick.

That line was never in any of those cuts originally. Interestingly, it is there in the workprint and the FC (on both the 5.1 and Atmos mixes).
I think that's only in the 5.1 for the DC, isn't it? From what I understand that was an acknowledged error, and it was actually corrected on some later pressings (at least in some territories).

BLADE RUNNER is a movie where I allow a little nuance into the "original audio" discussion. As Geoff D nicely laid out, the 2007 mix for the Final Cut is an extremely well-engineered effort that carefully balances respecting the original sound design and intentions while also beefing it up for newer sound systems. (The original version had a pretty immersive sound mix for its time anyway, so that certainly helped.)

Also, for me, the Final Cut is case of a sound mix being prepared specifically for a unique alternate cut of the movie, with the participation and approval of the original director. In that regard, that 2007 remix is the "original" audio for that cut of the film. (sort of like the infamous-but-actually-not-that-bad remix for the Special Edition of SUPERMAN).

But the Atmos on the UHD is now a re-remix for a cut of the film that already had perfectly good modern-sounding remix. And they went overboard this time, IMO (I have no idea if Ridley was involved with this one). It just feels like overkill to me.

Very good point. People go easy on Batty because he turns the waterworks on at the end - he’s not fooling me, guy’s a tosser.

Perhaps he was still enraged and upset and in a killing mood after offing his creator, and Sebastian’s participation can’t have helped his case.

Maybe it was kind of a "mercy killing"? I mean, had
[Show spoiler]Sebastian lived, with Batty dead he'd likely have been charged with Tyrell's murder for leading Batty to him. Plus, Sebastian wasn't long for the world anyway given his own "accelerated decrepitude" condition
.

Nobody brought this up, but Sebastian told Pris he had "Methuselah Syndrome" or his glands grow old too fast. A 25-year-old that looks like an old man. After Roy reveals he's a Nexus 6, Sebastian tells him that he's a genetic designer at the Tyrell Corp and that "there's some of me in you."

I took all that to mean the limited lifespan of the replicants came from, or was a modified version of, Sebastian's own genetic code.

Haha! ‘Hey buddy, there’s a chance you might get wrongly accused of aiding this murder I’ve just committed so since I’m a nice guy I’ll do you a solid and crush your head like a melon, whether you want me to or not’

Very good point, adds to the ‘Sebastian was complicit’ motive.

Actually, I just did bring it up, in the post you quoted.

I'm just spitballing. Didn't actually go out of my way to make up fake quotes for Batty like you did though, Haha!

Correct. It seems they mistakenly used some audio from the workprint for the Director's Cut 5.1 track, namely the landlord's 'Kowalski' line, and the alternate music when Rach is at the piano. The stereo track is unaffected, though.

One of the things that amuses me when the viewer sympathises with the escaped Replicants- they murdered 23 people, was it, on an Offworld shuttle (must have been a slaughter), kill Holden, Chew, Sebastian and who knows who else, and we are supposed to empathize with Roy at the finale. Funny old world.

Slaves bred to kill and more immoral things break free and kill to do it.
