I hope so, otherwise I'll feel pretty stupid for the next couple years.

I just want the improvements of a downscaled UHD HDR BD at 1080 to max out the capabilities of my equipment. (Denon 4520, JVC RS46)

There won't be many at all I bet.
The films are mostly smaller flicks at launch.
From what I remember colour.

After seeing The Revenant today, I really hope Fox makes it a UHD day and date release.

Do you have a display with HDCP 2.2 copy protection as part of its HDMI specs or an HDFury 2.2 spoofer unit (that may soon become fodder in a Hollywood studio lawsuit)?

If not, UHD Blu-ray's may not work at all in your situation (no video displayed). Better check things out first and fast if you need an HDFury. HDCP 2.2 is a must for any AACS 2.0 encrypted UHD disc, even for 1080p or lowly 720p displays.

It was said in internal BDA presentations that the idea was that UHD players will automatically downscale to 1080p if HDCP 2.2 is not found. Has something changed since then?

This is from early 2014, emphasis mine (slide from wikileaks). I guess the stress is on "should be allowed" when it comes to the downconverted 1.4 output, it wasn't set in stone at that point:

^ note the internal reference to 1080p as being "2K", these terms are simply accepted shorthand within the industry so the pedants need to chill

Doesn't say anything about that here

Ultra HD Blu-ray players will play all current Blu-ray Disc content. When connected to a current HDTV television, the player will output a standard HDTV signal. Ultra HD Blu-ray players will support existing Blu-ray media, as well as provide down conversion and HDR to SDR conversion functionality to match the connected television's capabilities
It would of been mentioned in asterisk if that was the case.

Then again, i wouldn't be surprised if 4KBD's got blocked from playing on 1080p displays. Why would they want us lovingly benefiting from 4K sources with significantly higher bitrates. Go buy that new hardware!

It would be nice to know more about the downconversion abilities of the Ultra HD Blu-ray players that are getting released.

It's kind of at odds with regular BD where most players, at least with 1080p, were incredibly similar, or ideally, identical. There's more room to differentiate with this feature.

Samsung were demoing their player's ability to do this behind closed doors at CES.
While HDR to SDR conversion is mandatory how can a video processor know how to compress the dynamic range of a video signal by 20,000:1 using only static metadata? Personally I am skeptical that the HDR10 version of the movie will match the quality of a professionally graded SDR version of the movie when displayed on a SDR display.

Hey Richard, mike has no problem with HDR -> SDR conversions, static metadata or not, as he has experience…..https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...r#post11359771

sorry, mike, linking your post ^ was too good to resist.

Dec '15 Widescreen Review (sorry, just now reading it), as many of us realize.

"Ultra HD TV Has A Problem"

"The ugly truth about Ultra HD is that the increase in resolution isn't worth it for the vast majority of home theatre enthusiasts"

"There is a steep improvement in Ultra HD Video, however, but it derives from other properties: HDR and WCG".

On another note, Joe Kane in the latest Widescreen Review:

"If you want to be an early adopter of HDR, a good starting point would be a set that can do HDR-10, including P3 color on a 10 bit panel with a light output of at least 750 nits".

I think only the FALD Samsungs and Sony's hit that right now, but my 930C can get pretty bright in the 400-500 nit range. I'm more concerned with 10bit, P3 and HDR10, which it will do.

He also alludes that currently the OLED's are doing things to hurt real PQ trying to hit the higher light output.
