Anyway, first we had uprezing (a process which is really not complex to perform and doesn’t look bad (ex. Skyfall), esp. if one doesn’t use compressed footage as uprez source), next though. may come upnitting, which is a different story…..

I would assume 4K can only be mainstream about 5 years from now. There are still many DVD buyers in the market, not even Blu-ray.

Will there be any improvement in 1080p blurays from here on? Wouldn't it make sense to also implement h265 on 1080p blurays? There will definitely be an improvement for those still using 1080p with higher bitrates.

Implementing h265 for 1080p Blu-ray discs would be brilliant but, unfortunately, the Blu-ray specification doesn't allow for it.

It would need new hardware meaning you may as well buy an Ultra HD Blu-ray player.

True. It would be cool if it would just mean a firmware update.

Does anybody know where I can get those "Blu-ray Elite Disc" packages? My "The Martian" copy that came with my UHD-K8500 is unfortunately badly damaged right out of the factory (it was sealed, but the logo has scratches etc.) ...

You may start seeing summer movies getting the BD-100 treatment this holiday season.

Now, the question will be if they'll use the extra storage for higher bitrate video encodes (including 12 bit Dolby Vision, which is supposed to require a fairly healthy data rate), or to cram more extras on the disc along with the movie... or so they can cram TV episodes for some of the more popular series like GoT, Better Call Saul/Breaking Bad, House of Cards, and others that were created with 4k in mind (only GoT would be a 2k upconvert).

My guess and hope it for 12-bit Dolby Vision and less compression. I think we'll also see more extras and trailers.

Isn't GoT mastered in 1080p, not 2K?

That headline was related to pre-orders for some of the upcoming documentaries from Busch Media... "The preorders are gigantic. That makes us very optimistic, and we are already working on further releases for the summer..."

Those are the TIMESCAPES 4K, INDIA 4K, etc. titles. According to the article Busch Media is also encouraging retailers to use those UHD-BDs as demo material to sell 4KTVs. The article also noted Lighthouse Home Entertainment as an indie company that will be releasing similar 4KUHD docs in the future.

Busch Media is very bullish on the prospects of UHD-BD, but according to the article Fox Germany was a bit more reserved saying it was still "too early to make conclusive statements on the launch of the UHD."

Sonopress, a German company that replicates discs, was very upbeat saying "Our first conclusion is thoroughly positive." Their position is that as the sales of 4KTVs continue to accelerate, larger numbers of people will want content to match. They called manufacturing orders for UHD-BD "surprisingly good" and feel the lack of region coding will bolster international sales.

Sonopress is also hard at work on the 100GB disc manufacturing lines. "Only when the so-called UHD BD 100 is ready for production can the new format fully utilize its advantages even for very long films." And they confirmed: "We are aiming for a start of production of the UHD BD 100 this summer."

The rep from Panasonic Germany noted sales of the DMP-UB900 saying, "The current shortage is due to the fact that our dealers have received so many pre-orders that the first delivery is completely out of print. Demand for the player has exceeded our expectations and the planned availability of goods has clearly been exceeded. We did not expect such a great response, and we are thrilled completely with the UB900." The article says Panasonic increased production capacity immediately, but cannot state for certain when the next batch of players will get to market.

The article concludes by suggesting this stronger than anticipated demand could make for a "blockbuster" Christmas season.

I have noticed that. Calling something 4K doesn't make it 4K. Makes me think of all the videos on youtube with "HD" in the title, yet the source is a 360p video.

Meaning more space for a movie, so maybe less compression.
