Geoff, look on the bright side, if the 4K Video Unlimited service were not to come to fruition in the U.K. and Europe, then not only would that essentially guarantee 4K Blu-ray, but probably even accelerate its appearance. And I don’t think you mind physical media do you?
As one of the websites said, it was also somewhat ironic that Sony chose a European trade show to announce the X8 4K series and, um, that it wouldn't actually be released across most of Europe.

I dig your point about 4K Blu-ray Penton, but it doesn't do me any good in the short term. I've spent a shitload of money on a 4K TV which is undeniably stunning with 'regular' HD content, but Sony Europe won't give any indications whatsoever about their plans for supplying actual 4K material.

I don't mind waiting, as I knew that'd be the case, but it'd be nice to know what the actual roadmap is. Will it be this year, next year, will we get the cake tin or have to rely on the PS4, will we even get 4K downloads at all, meaning that 4K Blu-ray is indeed our only option? Even the vaguest hint would put my mind at ease, but Sony are remaining tight-lipped.

I wish I could help you out but it seems spokespersons from all these companies (with the possible exception of RED) are far from candid in clearly expressing their project intentions, unless forced to do so by public opinion/pressure. What you often get are cryptic comments or generic answers which, at the end of the day are pretty meaningless if you have some real vested interest in one of their products, like you do. Heck, when you read some of the Q&A in the interviews with executives from any of these companies on websites like the Verge, etc. it reminds me of a defendant giving answers during a deposition.

The only personal reassurance I can offer you as a bystander on the 4K sideline is that indications are that Sony has *bet the farm* on the 4K ecosystem (with other companies following in tow) and the decision-makers will do nearly anything to assure its success. This bodes well for 4K enthusiasts, be they in the U.S. or other markets.

Heck, the industry is still slowly but surely pushing forward hard with making Ultraviolet work ( http://www.ultravioletacademy.com/london-2013/ ) despite the fact that for instance at the last HPA retreat ( http://www.creativecow.net/interstit...ry/870386&id=0 ) I attended, that when the topic of Ultraviolet came up during one of the presentations and the presenter asked for those in the conference room (easily 200-300 attendees) who actually used Ultraviolet, to demonstrate as such with a show of hands….nobody raised their hands! And I think everyone sees greater long-term potential for aspects of 4K than for Ultraviolet.

P.S.
For those aware of consumer electronics trade shows like CES, CEDIA, IFA, etc. but unfamiliar with professional events, think of the HPA retreat in the desert as a *meeting of the minds* rather than a *trade show* per se. The retreat has been routinely described by the audio/video journalistic press as….

“For nearly twenty years, the Hollywood Post Alliance(r) (HPA) Tech Retreat has drawn the top creative and technical experts involved in the creation and management of content to a conference where compelling ideas and new products are explored in lively conference sessions, networking events and demonstrations. The Tech Retreat is an informal meeting of the minds, where industry leaders in engineering, technology, creativity and strategic business; that are engaged in all aspects of digital-cinema, post production, film, television, video, and related endeavors, meet in an unparalleled environment for the exchange of knowledge and information. The gathering helps to define and clarify the development of technologies driving the industry.”

^ Which I think is an accurate description. For instance, Charles Poynton (http://www.poynton.com/ ) kicked off the past retreat with a discussion of perception and display issues pertinent to high frame rate presentations in a live webinar.

Steed , I saw no rattlesnakes on our group ride today but plenty of rattlesnake tracks (yep, they do make squiggly tracks) which I didn’t think worthy of taking a pic of for you despite the fact I remembered to carry my handy, compact (HD) camera….which itches the small of my back.

b.t.w., this recently announced Handycam isn’t compact enough for mountain bikers to carry in their jersey pockets but, it is 4K* and hobbyists can show their own 4K footage played back at 60p/50p through a single HDMI cable hooked up to their 4K Bravias, like the one Geoff owns…

That's very considerate of you, taking your recorder along. Look forward to seeing that rattlesnake.

Just doing this ….https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ay#post7565485

I hope to get one for you by the end of this ‘hot’ season, preferably with my front wheel in frame for ‘scale’ but if not this year, I’ll eventually snap one and post it someday. It’s not like those critters are going anywhere. They do hibernate around here from about Nov./Dec. until around April/May though.

First of all, it may be the ‘official’ upgraded bandwidth but, I’m pretty sure the math works out to be 17.82 Gbps < that’s for those who make a big deal out of the difference between ‘4K’ and ‘UHD’.

Anyway, to answer your question directly, yes, with HDMI 2.0 there is enough bandwidth to support 4K 60fps 4:2:0 10 bit. So the *restriction* to providing such enhanced picture quality to the public will not reside in any HDMI bandwidth obstruction; but rather, the willingness of display manufacturers and content providers to offer it.
And actually with HDMI 2.0 there should be enough bandwidth to transport 4K 60 10/12-bit 4:2:2, if people were so motivated to officially spec it for that particular bit depth/color space

Speaking of which, see the 3rd bullet point half-way down the page….http://www.ericsson.com/news/130827-...re_244129227_c i.e. "Live “true” 4K UHDTV video contribution at"

Seems someone is interested in future finer picture quality.

and because
given that Johnny Depp not only stares in Transcendence but also in another past flick, it gives me an excuse/opportunity to start off the work week with a good-tune-to-work-by post….

I just saw that Sony started a service for downloading 4K movies $8 for a movie rental for 24 hours and $30 to buy a 4K movie. I think that will kill 4K video. I don't think there are many people willing to pay the high cost of the screens and then pay $30 for a movie.

I expect that prices will drop but I know I won't be jumping on the bandwagon at $30 a movie or even $8 to rent. Once media comes out for 4K movies and we don't have to download them maybe they will be cheaper.

Hey, look at it this way, there are more than 3000 units of each title available for sale, so you won’t have to rush in and there won’t be any price-gouging beyond that figure on ebay, etc. for these movies…and these films were scanned in ‘true’ 4K….well, I guess when I get more time I should make precise comment of that at least to the ‘K’ counting hound dogs out there regarding the native optical resolution of the ARRISCAN film scanner. But gotta go, duty calls.

Google glass would come in handy, ideal for bike riding and trying to get a shot of something I would think.

I’m too tired to respond as I just contributed 4 or 5 straight posts on one of those perpetual Blu-ray vs. streaming debate threads and my goal is to get out of here by 7 P.M.

Me too, just as long as the Brazilian National team doesn’t use 2 goalkeepers (at the same time) like this club team did …http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/spo...uble-save.html

For those who don’t speak Portuguese and can’t follow the soccer video action due to the poor resolution, the ‘real’ goalkeeper comes out of the goal to block a shot (which he misses) and then the 2nd guy (a second *goalkeeper*, if you will, who in fact is the teams’ masseur ) in the goalmouth (wearing the white vest top with black sweat pants) makes a great save with his feet….and then runs for his life after doing so.

P.S.
4K tie-in…..the fact that Sony has made an adapter to allow broadcast HD glass to be used with their 4K cameras should help out quite a lot in video coverage of a potential 4K captured 2014 World Cup.

^ Seems like Eli doesn’t like to spend any money on anything other than basic color grade in the D.I. suite for it’s possible to blur or erase out almost anything….as well as doing a host of other more complex things. Of course, there is a pay-by-the-pimple fee involved.

P.S. To U.S. soccer fans, Mexico vs. U.S.A. World Cup Qualifier is on (ESPN)……NOW! I’m hoping for the best but, Mexico is desperate.
