Yes, but in the OP it makes mention of "pairing with the native 4k release". So I took that to be there will be some sort of distribution of 4k content this summer. Not just the upscaled BDs.

"A 4K physical format has not been finalized as of yet."

"These “Mastered in 4K” Blu-ray titles—paired with the native 4K titles for Sony’s 4K video distribution service, which is planned to be launched in summer 2013 in the US"

So does that.

Then they'll release a 2 Disc Release with the bullshit 50 GB filled disc and the extras on a second disc. In no way will I double dip on it.
I actually like that idea. I couldn't care less about extras, don't think I ever watched them, or if I did, that's about how much impact they made in my mind, but the compression/grain handling is one of the weaker points of the current Taxi Driver blu-ray. Of course, I'm not sure where people are getting the idea that this is anything other than the same disc in a new box.

Whoever came up with that sentence is a real genius.

People can just wait for the friggin native 4K titles via the distribution service.

most likely both cuts on the 1 disc sans the bonus material. Of course with this 4K print one wonders if the audio drop-outs in the first release are corrected as well.

That's another technology/service. They have someone drive to your house and upload a 4K movie to a local hard drive.

Drive to your house?

I'm pretty sure these will be air-lifted-in by Ninjas. Otherwise movie night will consist of:

"Why aren't we watching the movie?"
"It's stuck in traffic..."
"Lets put a DVD on then, they look okay up-scaled... I guess."

Technically speaking, true...

But everything I've read indicates that native 4k product will have lock-tight DRM and UAs, and not be available in disc form. I can't imagine that early adoption product being any kind of bargain either.

Upscaling to 4k from these relatively cheap Ultra-HD optimized BDs might still be preferable to many home theatre enthusiasts...at least with these already covered catalogue titles.

I see your point. But these releases are still only 1080p, but with a higher video bitrate and utilising "Enhanced colour" xvYCC colour space. And to get the benefit of xvYCC, you need equipment that can support it.

I have nothing against them pushing the bit rate up and introducing extended gamut, but its when they plaster 4K all over the packaging and try and sell it as some kind of 4K content/ready/optimised, etc, that gets me and will baffle the average Joe, who have just got use to 'Full HD' technology.

I seem to recall a Sony 4k demo last year where the reactions of viewers to the output of upscaled BDs was very favourable Tech-UK. The gist of that demo was that 4k systems do a better job upscaling from BD than BDs do from DVD. So the enhanced colour space info on these Ultra-HD optimized discs might very well be enough of a carrot for many - if not most -of those folks to justify the dip...especially if their alternative is an expen$ive distro service drop of native 4k content with possibly limited replay/reuse.

Of course, we won't know for sure until more 4k home theatre owners chime in with their own reactions. With 4k, in all its flavours, we're still very much 'niche within niche'.

No thanks, Sony.
