My local theater is bad about purposely dimming the bulbs in their projectors to save money, it's one of the major reasons I skip 3D showings altogether. It's been a lot more satisfying to watch a blu at home for years now and uhd has blown that theater out of the water.

I'd take Imax laser 3D over Dolby Cinema anyday - i don't like the rumble seats nor regular D-Box seats for that matter, distracting as f---- if you ask me

Yep. I still go to the theatres as often as I can but it's a problem when I came back from a film and watch the trailer on my television and it looks better than the actual film I just witnessed. Happens almost every time and it's starting to get rather annoying...especially for the prices we pay.

My biggest pet peeve about going...right here.

I have two digital IMAX's theatres very near me and those tend to be the ones that are the most brightly lit when it comes to their showings. Problem is, damn near every showing is in 3D and I can't stand 3D. So whenever there's a 2D IMAX showing, I try to go because it's becoming a rare event for 2D IMAX.

According to The Digital Bits there is a 50/50 chance that Disney will announce their support for Ultra-HD Blu-Ray next week at CES.

We’re hoping (and our sources tell us there’s about a 50/50 chance of it) that Disney will finally announce their intention to release titles on the 4K UHD format in 2017
Let's hope so.....I'm hoping to buy Dory, Jungle Book, Zootopia, Force Awakens and Moana on 4K Blu-Ray soon from them, haven't bought the blu-rays so fingers crossed

I stopped going to my local theaters for just that reason. It looks better and sounds better at home. And a bowl of popcorn costs about a quarter instead of six dollar. A coke is just as cheap. And I don't have to put up with some idiot texting right in front of me or noisy kids or idiots giving away the plot. If I go to the bathroom I can pause it and not miss anything and when I do miss something I can rewind it and watch it again. And the most important thing is I can turn on the subtitles. Why people pay outrageous prices to go to a movie theater is beyond me.

I tend to trust Bill Hunt, I really hope they go ahead and pull the trigger on the format sooner rather than later. I'm really interested in seeing Doctor Strange in HDR and The Force Awakens could really use it as well.

I used to follow The Digital Bits, but I think they struggle to stay relevant in today's day and age. Thanks for sharing, but that blurb from Bill Hunt is rather ridiculous when you really stop and think about it. "They may announce but they may not. It's about even odds." LOL. If they do announce..."I told ya so!" If they don't announce..."Well, I said it was 50/50." So ridiculous.

And does anyone really think that less than 1 week before CES starts that Disney doesn't know, or is 50/50, whether they are announcing support for UHD Blu-ray? So much for these "sources" of The Digital Bits...said sources must not be very good or close to the situation.

Additionally, while I'm sure we could learn about some more good catalog titles (from all studios) at the show that "have been quietly prepared"...let me remind you that earlier in 2016 The Digital Bits said the exact same thing and then went on to list all the usual "evergreen" and most coveted catalog titles by studio...very few of which have yet to materialize in any significant way. Also, what does "quietly preparing" mean anyway? Do the studios usually loudly proclaim what titles are or aren't going into production? I mean, cmon.

Again, I do like Bill Hunt and The Digital Bits...but the relevancy of the site and what he does is pretty low as compared to the late 90s, or even mid 2000's. Look I have no doubt Disney is working on titles and they will be on the format in 2017. I do agree with those saying they are waiting for Dolby Vision.

And if you want to speculate what's coming to the format in 2017, it's pretty easy. New theatrical releases will be day & date as per usual. Then think of the movies coming to theaters in 2017...and look for the tie ins (for example, Universal = The Mummy, Paramount = Transformers, Warner Bros possibility the Dark Knight Trilogy, etc). Sure all of those "tie ins" won't make it for various reasons (condition of original films, cost/benefit, etc). Finally, sprinkle in one or two of the "coveted" catalog titles...and you got your list for 2017. See, I could speculate, write this, and post it on a website...

Your entitled to your opinion of course....

We'll find out if anything happens next week for ourself but to trash Bill Hunt's reputation is just below the belt as far as i'm concerned.
He is known for his connections within the industry , what are yours ???

Anyway by next week we will know

Agree with Esox50. Bill is always so deliberately vague and the info he reports is not only behind what you can find on this site, but also stuff that anybody with a brain can figure out. His "sources" are total bs. He has never actually reported anything that we didn't already know.

Hunt is a great tech reporter and advocate for media formats. Reporting on CES and talking to sources is exactly what he is good at doing. It's his disc reviews that are bullshit.

It was absolutely not meant to be a hit below the belt. But he's known for his connections, which are so good he calls it 50/50? Anyone can flip a coin. I'm just calling a spade a spade.

I absolutely respect his advocacy for physical media, but I think his "insider" status was lost years ago as home media and the people in place at the studios changes...

Lets be clear, I DO think Disney will be doing something soon.

Esox , got snow? There’s still a *possibility* as I reckon there’s about 10 hrs. left in the 4th quarter.

In my experience, as to the best way to get accurate, concrete information out of the Disney folk without doing revised speculative statements every several months like some bloggers….is to ride their butts off during a group ride - as an example which proved spot on with regards to the change in film look from the real and computer world in Tron: Legacy - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...on#post4057329

For you see, I’ve found that inducing exhaustion in company employees is a great method to procure revelations. Otherwise Disney employees (the good ones) are actually well known for not sharing information even with their girlfriends or wives and if you are able to pull any real info (not 50/50-ish type) out of them willingly (without bringing them to the point of near physical exhaustion) then they most likely were counting on the person to leak it in order to purposely create a buzz.

The most difficult mouse house team to crack you might ask? Lasseter’s team -> https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...r#post10503632

I have a ride planned with some of them sometime around the end of January. Problem is I’m nowhere near as fast (fit) as I was years ago, but I’ll give it a go wrt animation projects.

Well, looks like Disney didn't make it in the 4th quarter 2016, even though you held out hope those last 10 hours. Maybe it was supposed to be 4th Quarter 2017?

And here like a fool I stayed up all night holding out hope despite the fact that puddy posted this deposition, errr statement from a Disney spokesperson who was specifically grilled at NAB 2016 about their HDR home deliverable plans (or lack thereof) at the time of the question…which was after Bill’s 4th quarter possibility proclamation….

If anything, the UOT would be their best bet. They did do those 4k conversions after all!
