In terms of merit, ‘Pro’, ‘Expert’, ‘well respected’, and truth, e.g. - https://www.politifact.com/californi...sumer-product/ are tossed around rather casually in the consumer electronics ecosystem and its ancillary entertainment oriented businesses, which seem to be never satisfied with having enough marketeers, be they CEOs, other inhouse employees or *independent* consultants.

Question

How would "Netflix Calibrated Mode" mode be an improvement over their content that has Dolby Vision? One of Dolby's claim is keeping "creators intent".

Until someone else can show differently, my belief is that the Netflix ‘Calibrated’ mode is not running with any premium HDR metadata stream on a progressive title-by-title basis and one should think of it as nothing more than a collection of basic Sony TV presets (like turning off any motion interpolation - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...d#post15506292)

applied generically to all Netflix content. I would imagine that when in the best cinema Dolby Vision mode in whatever brand TV, that setting, would also perform such rudimentary picture quality tasks just as a basic feature along with doing its more demanding task of dynamic metadata.

LOL

It's par for the course. Has everyone forgotten the "Macs are faster" (in one Photoshop filter perhaps) or the "Macs don't get viruses" campaigns?

With 5G, think of the implications this can have for content providers in terms of delivering the next generation of UHD technologies.
Credit this evening to Bill for alerting me to the ibcTV link where I watched the first few minutes of the presentation on 5G and to be honest, when I posted thee above post last Saturday regarding next gen UHD technologies, I was thinking more with regards to telcos 5G and putting 5G chips in devices easily facilitating delivery and viewing of native 8K HDR HFR(120/100 fps) content, with low latency, rather than 16K UHD TV as emphasized by that logo at ~ the 4min. 58sec. timestamp here…..https://ibc.gallery.video/ibctv2018/...rt=true&page=2

I haven’t gotten beyond about the 7 min. mark of the presentation because I’m hitting the sack early tonight, but I assume he’s referring to 5G’s benefits related to future 16K commercial rather than consumer displays. Anyway, so far nice videoclip describing how 5G will be revolutionary in terms of changing peoples’ lives not only regarding media & entertainment, but other things too and I'll save the clip for later watching.

They claim that, yes, but then they offer a "Dolby Vivid" mode, so the claim is demonstrably untrue.

Thanks to another member for reading ^ and PM suppling me the link which dropped today….https://ibc.gallery.video/ibctv2018/...autoStart=true. When I get around to it I’ll give it a listen.

As mentioned before - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...s#post15377796 , there was a considerate amount of discussion within the ITU on this critical subject (because displaying inaccurate skin tones becomes quickly obvious and distracts from viewers’ appreciation of the content) prompting amending the original document.

None of those ^. I respect his wish to not include his last name. Anyway, the information is what counts.

Food for thought: Since it only requires a little more than 10 MB to add HDR10+ metadata to a disc (for a 2 hr. movie), will Ultra HD Blu-ray discs be coming out anytime soon from any studio including Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and HDR10 all on the same disc?

Ideally that would be fantastic and the end goal. But I thought the big issue was getting the dv/hdr10+ layers to play nice together?

Or has that been overcome? Yea we know metadata is peanuts in terms of size so squeezing it on a disc isn't a big deal. But if all 3 hdr layers can be present on the same disc and not provide any compatibility issues with one another it would truly be magnificent and there'd really not be much of a reason for hdr10+ to NOT be adopted, especially since the encoding of it is supposed to be so easy.

I asked 2themax that last year. Have they finished testing? Do you know the results?

2themax, how ‘bout doing a
with an update as to the technical feasibility of a composite HDR format UHD Blu-ray disc.

I'm assuming that Penton-Man is posing that question because he knows from his sources that this will be happening. Warner Bros said last year that they wanted to do this, and they are supposedly releasing HDR10+ content by the end of the year.

Will be interesting how it works out and if the different metadata layers play nice with one another.

Just to CLARIFY, back when the HDR10+ talk started, it was explained that the 10+ metadata would be included in the main base layer. NOT as an extra layer.
