And I actually own the prior Shogun Inferno monitor/recorder for my work.

The end result was one of the film’s defining images, but it was hardly fun for McDowell.
“When we shot it, the lid-locks kept sliding off my eyelids and scratching my cornea,” the actor writes. “When the anaesthetic wore off, I was in such pain I was banging my head against a wall. But Stanley was mainly concerned about when he would be able to get his next shot.”

^ that’s really kind of pathetic that they didn’t use a properly fitting eye speculum as that part of any ocular procedure is rather rudimentary - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NU0TsugUJSE#t=31s and then Alex subsequently suffering from corneal abrasion(s) is inexcusable. He’s fortunate it didn’t become infected which could have led to a far more serious situation.
Kubrick might be viewed as one of the great filmmakers in cinéma history, and he was, but he was also some kind of a sadist. Check him carefully and you can see the devilish side in his eyes. It takes some kind of masochist actors to be in his films; that works best, the perfect combination.

Good point Penton, another very demanding filmmaker from his actors.

Ed and Michael could take it as they knew and/or worked with Cameron prior. It was Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio who couldn't stand Cameron's dictatorial style. He put her through hell. She never forgave him.

Indeed. I would HOPE that the doctor who was "brought in" would also have shown them how, or applied the clips themselves. I've had laser eye surgery which used them, and I was very scared indeed. There is something so utterly helpless about having your eyes forced open like that, exposed and vulnerable, wanting to close them but you can't. Petrifying - and I was wishing that I had not see "A Clockwork Orange" beforehand because I knew what they were!

Unfortunately, they don’t even put you to sleep for ‘miracle’ surgeries like DMEK corneal transplants….

Personally, I’ll take a colonoscopy any day of the week instead as they pretty much knock you out for that, don’t feel pressure or anything and you don’t see the dang surgical instrument coming right at you.

since The British & Irish Football Thread is pretty much dead, as a Liverpool aside, to soccer fans: I can’t tell you how much I’ve been impressed with LFC digging it out in their last 2 matches, wish I really could have been in Boston to experience it with these Fan Fest folks at Cask ‘n Flagon’s next to Fenway –

Ha. The eye clips were stealthily advanced towards me from behind so I didn't have that torture. The odd part was then wiping away the epithelium, which I could see like an enormous windscreen wiper which filled my entire vision - but not feel, due to the anaesthetic.

Had more than one of those other things, without sedation. Not nice but better than cancer.

This morning was very windy and wet, we lost power for couple hours.

Stanley Kubrick and his "sadistic" side behind the camera with some actors ('The Shining'):

Would you let your little sister being abused and tortured like that for so long!
I would have cut his toenails, unsedated.

Great filmmaker, awfully punishing person.
Stephen King was like ... rrrrrrrr! ...Not impressed one bit.
