From a nostalgia POV it'd be nice if Fox never gave up the rights to Ep IV just to keep the Fox fanfare on there because it's the one that started it all. I'm not so precious that I can't live without it on the Star Wars movies because I identify the Fox fanfare with a great many other movies too, but keeping it just on the original would be kinda sweet.

It seems to me the FOX logo and Fanfare for the original Star Wars films is so iconic even if Disney eventually distributes them I would hope they stay intact. They can put a disney logo preceding the original logos but I think it would seem almost naked without the FOX logo.

But that's not the point. LPs these days are a boutique niche business. There have been individual classic albums that have sold over 10 million albums in the U.S. The entire business for the first six months of this year was 9 million albums. Much higher quality and thicker (usually 180 gram) vinyl is used these days and the packaging is usually much higher quality as well. Vinyl used to be pressed in large factories. Now it's much smaller operations. And since no one is manufacturing cutting lathes anymore, the only lathes are the ones that exist and the owners of those lathes are charging a premium to use them. And LPs (as well as fancy CD boxed sets) are about the only way the labels can make money today and they're going for it. There aren't too many people aside from collectors buying physical music product anymore. So the labels are going to take advantage of those collectors while they can. There's a difference between being expensive and being overpriced. Is some of it overpriced? Sure. But that's the price we pay for free or cheap downloads and now the move to free or low-cost subscription streaming. The labels are doing what they have to do to survive. And this is one of the few ways that artists actually get paid something. |

Yep, Disney junked the Fox logo just about as fast as they could. There's zero chance of them wanting to actually keep it on there when it's their turn for the other distribution media (DVD/BD, theatrical etc). That said, there will NOT be a Disney logo either, just the LFL one with their own fanfare.
I wonder if we'll get a piece of new music for the LFL logo in front of Ep VII, I hope it's not the digital one with the music tracked in from Star Wars. [edit] Doesn't have to be music, I'd love to hear something like the probe droid signal from Empire, maybe they could change it to something different for every film? And that is what concerns me. Look, say what you will, but I believe Fox co-owns Episode IV, They co-produced, they co-financed it, like I said. But just that film, the other films they merely distribute, this you and I know. Still, they qualify as a Fox films and I myself I['m glad that Fox will at least keep IV. I'm getting off track here. Anyway, if Warner can keep the MGM logos for the pre-86 library, I don't see any reason why Disney would want to remove the Fox logo and fanfare come 2020. They know they'll tick a lot of us off if they do, so I'm sure they'll take the necessary measures. But yeah, I do wish Fox would throw a spanner in the works and try to renew distribution rights for the other 5 films. Either way, Fox logo and fanfare present and accounted for, or no deal. Incidentally, do the digital versions of I, II, III, V, and VI have the "Distributed by Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation" credit at the end? |

![]() [edit] Seriously, get out the Blu-rays and look at the copyright notice on the rim for each disc. Star Wars reads "© 1977-2011 Lucasfilm Ltd", the only sign of Fox's involvement is the "20th Century Fox Home Entertainment" logo, important part bolded. Yes, they produced it, yes they financed it (no "co" about it, although Lucas set up ILM with his own money), but the ownership was later handed over to Uncle George because he's an evil genius of a negotiator, however he wasn't a total bastard: he let them keep the crumbs of distributing it in perpetuity. Interesting StarWars.com article about the trailers for the OT films. The article is the first part of what is going to be a multi-part article about the Star Wars trailers.

I loved this SW.com interview with Dennis Muren about Return of the Jedi too, it's from a couple of years ago but he basically reiterates that the attitude towards making it was more "let's get it out the door", he hardly ever saw Marquand, and that as much as he loves CG when done right (as do I) he still loves to see practical effects wherever possible, even if they don't quite succeed. Kinda puts into perspective the continual insistence of some people that "it's ALL fake! There's nothing wrong with CG!" when one of the godfathers of CG VFX (Abyss, T2, JP, SW SE's the prequels, etc) says otherwise.
[edit] Yes, he's still a big proponent of CG but makes it clear that he's not impressed with latter-day stuff because there simply isn't the time and/or money there to refine it into something special, which is my problem with CG in a nutshell: AMAZING tool when used right, but when it's not it looks faker than any practical effect would ever do, so there's always something to be said for getting a balance between the two IMO. http://www.starwars.com/news/intervi...rn-of-the-jedi Last edited by Geoff D; 10-25-2015 at 10:35 AM. |

They're all the same discs for the movies, you can just go with whatever looks prettiest to you. If you get the steels you won't get the extras discs, but they're pretty lacking anyway.
