Well, a great number of BD players have zoom functions built into them as well, so that'll bypass the problem of people who have older or cheaper models

Jeff,

Is Silence of the Lambs on BD from a newer or older master? It seems like it has some DNR in some scenes.

I would expect they used the same master as they did for the last DVD. I haven't seen it myself, but the shots I've seen definately suggest an older master. Remember this disc was done back in 2007

Jeff,

Thanks. Is "Silence..." a title likely to be re-released down the road, or do you think it's as good as it will get? I only ask because it contains so many extras and I'm wondering if they would even bother remastering it one day.

Purely random...

The Ghost & The Darkness

I dont think this ever even saw an anamorphic release on DVD. I thought it was one of Paramounts better selling catalog titles at the time.

Is this at all on Paramount's tentative BD schedule in the next few years?

Couldn't say, maybe.

As far as Silence goes, I'm sure that they'll remaster it the next time they do a push on the title

... which really should've been this time, IMO. Not just from a 'minimize the dips' perspective, but from a 'the jump to BD is much bigger than the jump to better BD' perspective.

The disc was done back in 2007 when standards were very different, maybe even 2006. It was supposed to come out around 2 years ago. MGM's budget isn't gigantic, and they probably decided that this one was good enough to go out

it's only a guess as to their line of thinking mind you

Yes, the work they released was done back then. Whether that work should have been released, however, is another matter.

Silence of the Lambs was originally released early in 1991 (Valentines Day, I think). The film's 20th anniversary will be in a little less than 2 years.

For The Ghost and The Darkness Paramount recycled the LaserDisc transfer, letterbox only, and insult to injury that transfer had been cropped to 2:1 from it's anamorphic Panavison OAR of 2.35

Showtime in the past couple years has ran it on Showtime HD and in full 2.35 so there's hope, and at least when it finally makes it to BD it will be OAR.

Hey Jeff or Bill,
I was wondering if there is any word on whether To Kill A Mockingbird will be released this year.

I am about ready to pull the trigger on the Legacy Series DVD and if it has a chance of coming to Blu this year I will hold off.

Thanks for any help!

Nothing on the horizon, everything at Uni is focused on playing catchup. I'm sure it's a priority for them however, when they start doing classics.

So that means almost every catalog title from them in '09 will be something already released on HD DVD?

Aside from the Spielberg catalog, I was hoping we'd get some movies not released before.

Wow, I hope not.

The Jurassic Park series was released to DVD in October 2000. This was just over 3 years into the products life cycle.

We are coming up on 3 years of HD optical disc, so I would certainly expect most studios should really start releasing the big guns within the next 12-18 months...

This is good to hear. There are a bunch of titles that were out on hd-dvd that I am still waiting on: Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead, Liar Liar, Bruce Almighty, In Good Company, Patch Adams and I know pronounce you Chuck and Larry to just name a few.

Releasing the big guns is one thing if the studios control when it releases, but when the director is the only one who can give the greenlight for a movie then you will be waiting for a while.

They still have their general catalog strategy, but many resources are dedicated to re-establishing their evergreens. That's why you're seeing such a huge push from them now during the usual dead zone for releases
