Paidgeek --

I just saw your post over at AVS saying you'd be taking a break from that forum. I certainly can't imagine how you've been continuing to post over there all this time. It is sad, though, that there will be one less voice of reason over there. Given the hugely lopsided list of "insiders" on that forum, I am starting to think it's time to just give that forum over to MS and be done with it.

A couple of questions:

Why (in any insider's opinion) would a company as big as Microsoft (and with as much to lose) allow someone in such a high position to run their mouth off on an online forum, making derogatory and sometimes insulting comments about other companies, with no evidence to back up many of his attacks. The liability is just insane. Also, what kind of mods do they have over there that allow the same man to continue to try to "out" the identity of other insiders on a regular basis?

And for a real Blu-ray question:

"Rent" has been released in Japan and Korea on Blu-ray, and I'm thinking of importing it (along with a few other titles). Since it's a Sony release, though, I'd rather just wait if it's coming in the near future in the U.S. Any word on that title?

Not really a question, so please move to "fluff" thread if appropriate.

Just wanted to say thanks to paidgeek for the patience staying there for so long. I'm sure it was a very stressful period going up against those FUD-meisters. Hope it didn't do anything to damage your health permanently.

Looking forward to more great info here. And if you are ever in San Jose area (there's a Sony office nearby!) feel free to send me a PM, I'll be happy to buy you lunch or something.

thanks

hello Paidgeek,

A little while ago, I asked you about some market data. Since you're at IFA and a few numbers have been scattered throughout the different presentations and releases, could you please check with GfK, NPD and Nielsen if more consistent US and European data on player and disc sales, could be disclosed over here?

On a personal note, I'm very sorry for what happened at AVS and what you had to endure.

To both Insiders and Mods:

Many executives from Disney, Fox and Warner - and CE companies - are attending IFA and Cedia. Since none of them have insiders participating in this forum, would it be possible to exploit this opportunity in order to organize a chat or separate Q&A sessions?

If timing is too constrained to fit in their agenda, could it be possible to say a word to these people and see if anything could be organized at a later date?

Paid
I agree with the above. I said it in the past that I think that you went way above the call over there since circumstances were obviously not balanced. Thanks for putting up with all of that for us.

I hope you continue to post here.

I haven’t visited that forum since I broke the Stephen Nickerson (WB) news over there --except reluctantly in links provided to me from some members here in PM’s.

It’s obvious to many of us here that AVMS is just a mouthpiece for HD DVD and M$, in general, given the overwhelming bias as to the way that forum is moderated to begin with. That is why so many of us here are AVMS refugees.

As far as I’m concerned, AVMS has been this way for a long time, the recent Paramount deci$ion just peeled off more layers of the onion and exposed the forum for what it really is………..a pro HD DVD site masquerading as a “scientific” neutral site.

I suspect now, you will see some posts on their Insider’s thread in reaction to paidgeek’s decision inferring that “open” debate is the most honest and credible way to gain information about high definition optical discs.

Well I say….”Don’t piss on paidgeek and tell him it's raining.” He’s much smarter than that.

P.S.
The party was great, I missed any HD VD news today and I’m outa here for awhile on vacation. Have a happy, enjoyable Labor Day Holiday folks.

Penton

Default Paidgeek appreciation

I just read Paid's final post at AVS. I glanced at the post immediately following, which purports not to understand his reasons and insinuates he's being arbitrary. At that instant I closed the tab in the browser and returned here.

For the past six months I've lurked here before registering this month I've been hugely impressed with his gracious and informative contributions to this forum. I hope he continues to put up with us and our nagging queries.

Many thanks Paidgeek for your highly valued postings here!

Paidgeek....

I confess, I have not read ALL of this thread, and I am sorry if this has already been asked, but...

Do you have any contacts over at SCE, and can you give them some feedback?

If so, here goes...

Its great that they turned on the PS3's abily to recognize media servers, it truly sets the device ahead of the pack of standalones, making it a legitimate media center. The only negative is the support (or lack there of) of not necessarily codecs, but of packages. It is great that it supports the MPEG2 and MPEG4 codecs (including h264 and x264) but would it be possible for them to expand the support of packages to include matroska files (.mkv)

For those that don't know, .mkv files are a completely open source package format which allows for video, audio and subtitle information packaged into a single file. Because it is simply a package, the video and audio codecs can be pretty much anything, although the most common that I have seen is .mkv using mpeg4 and AC3.

TIA for getting the feedback to them.

Cheers,
Scott

Another AVMS refugee.
You’re smart and you drink wine so it should...... pretty well be intuitive........just follow what Iceman II stated above.

Re: paidgeek
Keep in mind he is at least an executive level higher than the Amir, and you should do just fine. (That means that if you ask a question, it is not uncommon to not get an answer for days, as he's got a helluva alot of things on his plate in the real world)

Re: Me?
Ask paidgeek how difficult it is to reach me via cell phone and you’ll get an idea of what level I’m at.

Re: Talkstr8t ?
Let him tell you himself once he gets back from some show in Berlin.

Re: Kjack?
He’s on vacation ….where I’m still trying to go if my wife would get her act together with our dog and such.

Re: The blu-ray.com moderators?
They’re all good guys.

Re: The blu-ray forum membership ?
First rule of thumb is to try to help out other members. This is not a place for intellectual one-upmanship. This is a place for everyone to enjoy their format of choice.

Welcome aboard.
Since you drink wine, did you bring along thebland ?

P.S.
My Mom (God rest her soul) was born in York, Pa.

Penton, Amazon is showing that the BD "David Gilmour: Remember That Night" is 1080i. Is there a reason it's not 1080p, and will it make much of a difference on a 1080p television?

Edit: my tv is 56" if that matters

Amir just quit posting (for the moment) to show solidarity

Quote:
I also believe members should be able to answer questions when they know it. They should not be allowed to argue with each other of course, or guess/argue. But being able to provide clear answers to a question saves insiders work in chasing the same answer down. If the answer is not correct, we can always chime in otherwise. With some level of restraint, this was a good development I believe.

I also think that letting members make measured counter argument to insiders is the right thing to do. Balance is important of course. But I think a bit of healthy, non-dogmatic debate as we have been having is useful. If the pain becomes too high for any insider, they can just choose to ignore the posts as I have at times. I know that even without the new rules, I was subjected to this kind of questioning

So I have decided that at least for a short while, I am also going to refrain from posting in this thread, and by definition, all of AVS. I do not want us to go back to the strict Q/A style and this is my childish way of showing it .

During this period, I welcome hearing your thoughts in this thread if the mods allow it, or elsewhere on which direction we should go in the future. I will continue to read all the postings here and elsewhere, but won’t contribute until we find a way where we can have meaningful interaction between insiders and members as we have been having. And of course not create work for our tireless moderators or drive insiders away. I also have some ideas along these lines which I will share later.
Notice he couples his...magnanamous gesture with the TRUE ANSWER to the Prestige issue, which pretty much everyone figured out months ago (bad batch) to hide the HD rot issues

Wow it has gotten really tough out there in AVM$ land. Loosing two insiders is quite big! Luckily we still got Paid, Penton, TALKSTR8 & others. BTW I have a question for the insiders if they know when Predator will be released by Fox?

Hmm,
Kinda makes one wonder why the mods abandoned the "strict Q/A style" to begin with............ shortly after the Paramount deci$ion.
