still a bummer! that's the one i really want.

i can wait -- too many blu movies to get through anyway

say - now if we could get the holy grail out on blu, maybe the ghostbusters movies, pink floyd's the wall, and... well, I could go on.

Well that's interesting. The story on the main page states the info came from Sony. I hope it will be corrected now. And I thought the term 'massive' was over the top in the first place, imho. No offense to Josh.

In Josh's defense, the news on the front page doesn't actually say that it came from Sony...it does say; however, that there has been a request sent to Sony to verify what has been posted.

http://hdguru.com/?p=131

He claims he has "asked all the 120 Hz LCD vendors". Sony may want to sue this guy for making false claims, he has cost Sony some lost sales (I know it cost them mine, at least until now, as I would never buy a 120Hz TV that doesn't do 5:5 pulldown correctly -- this is the reason why I forewent the Sharp 120Hz LCDs that came out earlier this year even though I'm quite happy with the Sharp 768p LCD that I currently have).

I'm glad Sony fixed the 60i input too. According to this:

http://www.hometheatermag.com/hookmeup/1106hook/

46XBR2 failed the 3:2 film cadence test last year. I don't watch that many movies on TV (have Blu-ray for that ) but it's still nice to have this done correctly.

One more question, can the 40/46/52 XBR4/XBR5 do anything to restore 5:5 in film-based content sent as 1080p/60 (not very important) or 720p/60 (more important, as Fox and ABC broadcast movies this way)? In other words, can it detect repeated frames (AAABBCCCDD) and compensate for them (AAAaaBBbbbCCCccDDddd) (here uppercase are original frames and lowercase are repetitions of identical frames added by the TV) or will it do a 60->120 conversion by repeating each frame (AaAaAaBbBbCcCcCcDdDd) thus resulting in a 6:4 judder? (This is assuming Motion Enhancer is turned off, of course.)

Thanks so much Paidgeek. I (and others) have been searching for an answer to this question for months. I think I'm going to go buy the TV this weekend!

enjoy
gandalf
All i can tell you is that i own the 52' xbr 4 and it is an amazing tv. I think the hdguru made the same mistake that cnet made. In cnets intial review of the 46' xbr 4 they said that the tv can't display a 24fps source correctly. I think hguru used the hqv hd-dvd to do his tests, but since his player only does 1080i/60 he came up with scewed results. If you look at the cnet review there is an adendum apologizing for the mixup with the 24 fps. From personal expierience i would highly recomend this tv.

What ?

I really, REALLY hope you plan on paying double for overtime.
I mean, I know there is a format war going on but……………

You know SPE can easily push back those other 3 titles and in so doing not jeopardize the announced (and unannounced) street dates of other future releases.

I hope everyone has thought this through.

Hi Paidgeek,

On the topic of canceling titles because of time/people limits...

How many BR titles can a studio typically work on at a time at this point? How many DVD titles? (use Sony as an example if you don't know other studios -- or is this information you can't give?)

Is the number of BR titles in the pipeline going to steadily increase next year so we can expect more than 1-2 release per week average (if we're lucky) from Sony (or any other studio for that matter)?

How quickly can we expect BR releases to number 10+ a week every week (total titles, even), consistently? (can we expect it middle of next year or is that something we can to wait for '09 for?)

the circuit city deal is done and over with, sadly. I went back today to buy 6 more flicks but they denied me! Anyhow, i went to Frys Fountain Valley, and talk about being picked clean. Sony/Disney BD's were baren other then a few of the unpopular titles (like dinosaur). I found 1 copy of Final Fantasy behind a bunch of Warner titles, but the line was too long to justify 1 title and i was going to be late anyway. I got rainchecks for 10 Sony BD movies from frys, so i just have to wait for the shipment to arrive and go buy buy buy.

I really wish sony was more prepared for this deal!

p.s. - I am not a big TGIF fan, i go to Harbor House in sunset beach, you should check it out.

Penton or Paid or any other industry insider,

What's going on with Weinstein? I believe we heard from Penton and from Weinstein's booth people that it was more or less a done deal we'd get Grindhouse and I've little doubt sooner or later we will, but when? Has that changed now?

Are they taking a Fox like hiatus on HD? Did the paramount decision screw with them? (like: they intended to go BR, then paramount decision happened and now they are confused and can't seem to do anything?)

Hopefully someone can answer, but if not then no worries... I understand not everything can be talked about.

Engadget reports that the Cell has been sold to Toshiba. The google translation of the press release also makes it sound like the RSX (PS3 GPU) was sold too.

First, it blows my mind that 2 companies on one front are cutting each others throats, but then on another front are in close cooperation. But I guess as big as Sony is, it's probably not uncommon.

Question is, will this have any affect on the HD war? It sounds like Toshiba has a large interest now in the leading Blu-ray player.

For HD DVD production problems I would look at Transformers, one of the biggest HDM releases of the year and they couldn't get the discs out quick enough.
I think this confirms that production capacity is more than capable -

Paidgeek, Will 20 Million Miles to Earth contain the original B&W version as well the colorized version? And if so, will the B&W version be in high definition as well? Is colorization done before or after the mastering. I'm just curious about the sequence and what it means for future releases of B&W films that someone decides to colorize . Thanks.

So the review of "Return to House on Haunted Hill" has been posted on HDD:

http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/949/...untedhill.html

Here is a quote from them, looks like it doesn't have truly seamless branching as hinted in this forum - anybody know if this changed last minute or why?

***

So, is the disc's interactivity truly seamless? The answer is an unqualified "pretty much." To be sure, the quality of the footage itself is absolutely consistent -- no matter which choices you make, it always feels like you're watching the same movie. The graphical sequeways to the "decision" pop-up interface are also immediate and transparent. However, once you pick one of the two possible options at each decision point, there is a lag of varying lengths while the disc cues itself up to the next segment and the narrative resumes. (I tried the Blu-ray version on the PlayStation 3 and a Samsung, and the HD DVD version on two different Toshiba players, and "jump" times were between 3-5 seconds, with the PS3 the quickest.) This very minor irritant aside, navigating your way through 'Return to House on Haunted Hill' is about as easy as can be -- just sit back, keep your remote handy, and watch the carnage ensue.

Hmm... maybe it was because the film actually stops and waits for user input that causes the jump. I imagine that if it just kept playing, it would have been seamless. Too bad though; any comment, Penton?
