Paidgeek:

Although my question is about the PS3 specifically, it would apply to other Bluray players as well.

My receiver (Sony STR-DG910) has a night mode, but I believe it only works when the receiver internally decodes Dolby Digital or DTS. Is it possible to get Bluray players to apply a "night mode" to the PCM signal (or internally decoded TrueHD sent as PCM)? I almost always watch my movies at night, and since I live in an apartment I have to continuously adjust the volume in most movies to adjust for the low/high volume sections.

Thanks

I do reviews for HiHD occasionally in order to help the Blu-ray cause. We have a more dedicated review staff here, that can take the time to review tons of titles in a very professional manner.

I agree that they either have it or can get it if needed (where PLENTY is defined as compared to what it cost to sell those $98 players, get Paramount/Dreamworks, etc.). People here should be realistic. I believe the expectations for this fiscal year are $68 billion in revenue and $1.6 billion in net income. I'll save my thoughts on why I think it would be a mistake to underestimate what Toshiba can afford to do for another thread, but wanted to add those figures here.

MS or Warner? Don't you think that there are other Toshiba cheeleaders in the dark? Why is there a bigger war in the American market? If Sony and MS switched places who would be winning? Things are never what they appear. In a sea of yes, you should always embrace voices of dissent. It broadens your perspective. I have learned to be emotional about blu-ray from people such as yourself. I have learned to be realistic from others. We all support the format and want it to succeed. What good is dialogue if it isn't constructive?
Warner and Paramount both had/have agents from Lieberfarb's regime in them in key positions. Lieberfarb, while doing wonders for DVD is now HD DVD's #1 shill for Toshiba. Nickerson(former WB HD media head) is a disciple, and so is Alan Bell(former WB, now Parmamount Chief tech officer), who did a lot of the tech work on HD DVD. They were in perfect position to influence policy. Paramount will dump HD, and then Bell will leave to "pursue other interests" (aka fired) just like Nickerson did after he failed at his mission

Can you see now why what happened did?

Thanks. I hope that the BDA is listening. The knowledge base in these forums is incredible. I think that they were slow out of the gate. I think that they were waiting for victory to be given as opposed to taking it. I really like their current direction and aggressive moves, as far as educating the public. I hope that this also helps some of the folks who get a little too hysterical over every move Toshiba makes. I was one of those folks. I returnded a HD-A2 from Amazon one month ago. Also, I now buy other titles(I never previously considered) whenever I think about BB, Matrix, V, and Posiedon. Be realistic. Just enjoy your blu-ray movies and player! We have so much more titles than the other side.

Default Insiders Thread

I've run into a situation multiple times where I could have used two sets of Subtitles at the same time. I never considered this before I purchased an HD TV / Blu-ray Player. Here is my scenario:

I speak English. My wife's first language is Spanish, but is fluent in English. When watching a foreign film in Italian, French, Portuguese, etc. I need the English Subtitles, but my wife although fluent in English has to work very hard to keep up with a movie in English Subtitles, and doesn't really enjoy the movie.

In this scenario it would be better if I could see a strip of English Subtitles while she watches the Spanish Subtitles. I don't really care how it’s done, one could be on the top of the screen and one on the bottom. With 1920x1080 resolution there is plenty of room to display two sets of text, even if the player has to scale the fonts down.

Has anyone seen a Blu-ray player with this feature, or read about such feature in any specs?

Can you think of a reason why it wouldn't be possible? Where the data is stored on this disc, etc....

Nicoz.

These are all good things to hear that may end this war more quickly...and maybe my prediction below is correct...

Is it likely that with profile 1.1 out and 2.0 just around the corner, that some studios that are currently not Blu-ray exclusive, will either become neutral or Blu exclusive? ... or are there more behind the scenes politics that are the real reason they haven't adopted Blu?

Slysofts comments for BD:

http://forum.slysoft.com/showthread.php?t=9453

Quote:
6.1.9.6 2007 11 07

* New (Blu-ray): AnyDVD ripper copies BD+ titles
* New (Blu-ray): Removed "BD+ not supported" warning, as all available BD+ titles can be copied with AnyDVD ripper, or can be watched on HTPC without HDCP using PowerDVD 3104 and AnyDVD. Reports indicate, that burned BD+ titles work on PS3 and standalone players as well.
* Note to Twentieth Century Fox: As you can see, BD+ didn't offer you any advanced security, it just annoyed some of your customers with older players. So could you please cut this crap and start publishing your titles on HD DVD? There are thousands of people willing to give you money.
* Note to people considering to invest in HD media: Please buy HD DVD instead of Blu-ray. HD DVD is much more consumer friendly (e.g., no region coding, AACS not mandatory). Don't give your money to people, who throw your fair-use rights out of the window.
* New (HD DVD & Blu-ray): Support for more MKBv4 titles
* Some minor fixes and improvements
* Updated languages

Any comments?

Any comments?
Insiders, is there some reason that Slysoft is not being pursued legally?

I realize you guys are not in the legal department, but as a shareholder it is unimaginable to me that Sony is not suing this company. Especially with their attitude of thumbing their noses at Blu-ray that can be seen in the comments above.

Slysoft is based off of an island that is out of the jurisdiction of copyrights. That is why they can sell that type of software without consequences.

As of now, I personally give the guy the benefit of the doubt (naïve innocence) in regards to his last stated opinions.
i don't know... i think you're being very generous with the person in question.

Lets get one thing straight, my contacts at WB are way better than your's. The mighty P-Man's are better than mine, you see i have official meetings with these people when they are in town, he takes them to lunch and talks about the family out of genuine interest rather than to make small talk.

Edit - quoted the wrong person!

If only the HD-DVDer's read this, and similar, posts, maybe they'd have a reality check.

Then again, I guess more of them are reading this forum these days than dedicated HD-DVD boards!

Default Sony BDP-S300 price reduction!

Not sure if this had been posted anywhere already but…

The Sony BDP-S300 is getting a $100 price reduction from Sony to an SRP of $399 in the next couple of weeks. This has been planned and was talked about at the pre-holiday meetings in CA today.

My question is........ what about all those self-proclaimed “addicted to AVS folks” ?
With the AVS administration just abruptly stopping all the postings on the HDM format threads – it must have thrown alot of members into cold turkey withdrawal symptoms.

Man, that’s just……………….cold !
At least they could have included a link in their “official” notice to a comparable sympathetic forum like hddvd.com so that the membership could come down slowly.

You know, sort of like giving methadone to a morphine addict.

P.S.
Dobyblue and Rob Tomlin, guess what…………..I’m still on post #666 !
It must be a sign.
