If Pixar released a title a month, how long would they have something to release?

Yeah, Pixar has made 8 films...and 2 are already out. It's not an endless well of titles there.

Nonetheless, you will get two Pixar movies this year...Nemo and Wall-E.

Personally, it doesn’t bother me much that some people like to provide their opinions on the Insider’s Thread because Paid and I enjoy reading some of your comments that are centrally located (for us) here.

It gives a certain rhythm to the thread.
*Moderation* is the key, and by that, I mean as long as comments don’t become excessive in number, I’m fine with it. I think the mods here do an excellent job of keeping everything on an even keel. They seem to have an uncanny ability for determining when things stray too far off with interpersonal communications.

Now, if you guys desire a corresponding discussion thread mirroring the Insider’s Thread for your own benefit then I guess you can chime in here with your feelings (as noted above)…………

Is this like a role-playing thread? If so, who gets to be which Insider? JK

Alright, maybe this will help to get things back in the groove... Paid, Penton, or any of our others in the know...
There is a high definition media show coming in early December and then of course CES in January...
Any hints, clues, or insights, or is it still way too early?

Sure this is good news. Of course we need to see the video to determine what he really meant. You know how these things can get out of hand.

But I will be really happy when the writer's strike is over (and I hope that it ends with a mutually beneficial conclusion). Do you have any update about the strike? BTW, which do you think will end first, the writer's strike or the format war?

Very nice read. Happy? Well, it's all good. Calling the $399 PS3 a price cut is not accurate. It's a new product with a price tag lower than the more equipped model.

I'm not in the industry but I can count a few SAG-AFTRA-WGA members among my friends; sadly, it seems I'm generally more interested than they are about what their unions are up to. (I discovered this in grad school, trying to write a paper about the commercials strike in 2000 for a course titled "The History of Labor in Film"---my personal primary sources turned out to be practically useless and I had to change topics. )

Following coolmilo's lead, I'd like to add that I also would be very interested in any general observations or feelings the Insiders would be able to offer about the current strike. Not looking for any juicy hard data or anything: a couple tidbits about the emotional tenor of the situation from an inside POV would satisfy me easily.

I think Blu-ray is just a better format," Stringer said. "Our partners are with Blu-ray Disc because, first of all, we have greater security, which Fox is particularly good at. Disney thinks it's a better picture. And the sheer amount of bandwidth on the disc gives directors and beyond all kinds of future opportunity, including director's cuts and who knows what 3-D capabilities will be down the road.
Here's my usual plug for 3-D on Blu-ray Disc:

In that latest Stringer quote, he mentions possible future 3-D encoding on Blu-ray due to higher bandwidth.

I'm very eager to have the BD group offically recognize the secondary video channel running in full 1080p24 as a carrier for 3-D material. Players could optionally provide 3-D playback but the software manufacturer would only need to produce a single disc that uses the second video channel to hold the second video stream in full 1080p24 just like the feature film on the primary channel (both L and R eye presentations equal in PQ).

Then "3-D" equipped BD players could:

1. Matrix the two 1080p24 streams together in 1080p48 for use with shutter glasses.
2. Matrix the two 1080p24 streams together in 1080p60 etc. for use with shutter glasses.
3. Send each native 1080p24 stream out via dual-HDMI output to feed two discrete projection units for high-end projection via polarized filters (like IMAX).

3-D has always been acheived via compromised methodology on every format thus far. Let's get BD set up with a protocol and methodogy for high-quality/transparent 1080p24 3-D from the start. Then software providers and hardware manufacturers could provide that feature when desired.

Insiders... help get this on the table of the BD group. PLEASE.

The only problem with the 3D is that you might need a specific TV, in that it has to have one specific function, 120 MHz so that it can display 60 fps per eye...
I do not think mine does that. Which means that I do not stand a chance of seeing 3D at home unless I get a new tv.. Am I wrong? Please tell me that I am.

Has anyone else seen the 3D HDTVs in Bejing's airport? No special glasses needed...

You're correct, you'd need a new set unless you have one of the Samsung DLPs with interface ports for shutter glasses.

I think what David's saying is basically "build it and they will come". Add the necessary spec changes and you'll have a basis for hardware manufacturers and content providers to make working systems out of. Do it right the first time and ensure that as the industry transitions to 3D movie making (like James Cameron is experimenting with) it's a relatively seamless upgrade process.

I would suggest looking forward and going for slightly higher specs than vanilla BD though - 30P instead of just 24P, higher density BD discs, 2x-3x read speed to handle both streams etc. One way of maintaining bandwidth and backwards compatibility might be to use 100GB discs, with the first 50GB readable by regular BD players and the second 50GB containing the other eye information and readable by a dual pickup. Or they could go with interleaving and a lower bitrate cap for each stream in order to reduce hardware costs. They could also go for a flipper design. This kind of stuff needs to be worked out, and the earlier the better as then we avoid not only yet another format war, but it becomes a part of BD itself. Call it B3D or something (and yes, I want royalties if you decide to use that ).

Dang. Well hopefully by the time the 3D technology takes off, i can afford another TV... like in 10 years or so.....
But really, I would LOVE to see 3D on my TV, but since I am not sure it can handle that (I doubt it), I will have to live with 2D (as people have for the last 100 years) until it is a mainstream product.

While I don't frequent the sites where people post rips of HD DVD and Blu-ray titles and so can't confirm for myself, I've read that there are no 720p reencodes of titles with BD+. Those reencodes are important to some who want to avoid paying to buy or rent these titles when they can, partially because their sizes are much smaller and so download faster, but also have less likelyhood of putting somebody over their monthly download allowance with their ISP.

My question is this. If BD+ is keeping hackers from doing these reencodes and so at least reducing piracy a little bit for BD+ titles, is anybody communicating this to Universal, Warner, and New Line? Along with how much Slysoft (who I would think AACS and the studios would consider an enemy) dislikes Blu-ray, largely because of the extra protection that they have to figure out how to break?

personally id rather use the glasses then have to buy a new tv. Im definitely interested in this feature after watching beowulf in imax 3d.

Are the mitsubishi players intending to make specific titles 3d (ie those encoded as such) or do they intend to try to make any movie into 3d?

Negotiations are set to resume on Nov. 26; otherwise, there has been no significant interval change since my last post………………..
