I've been waiting for this title for a long time. Hopefully it won't disappoint. I always wonder if my PQ could be better even though I'm happy with it

Hmm -- I have the HD DVD/DVD version. I wonder if the BR version will be updated.

I will give it a rent.

The HD DVD/DVD version works great for me since it allows me to calibrate for all my media devices (since all of them can play either HD DVD or regular DVD).

Quite surprised to find out they make a rentable version of this. Seems like it would greatly cut down on sales.

Hopfully Zip.ca rents it too.

Now how does this work? I am assuming you need a TV where you can actually correct the colors manually. I have an older elite big screen where I can adjust pretty much everything and now I have a 37 inch lg 720p screen that doesn't give me nearly as many options. The big screen was professionally calibrated but the 37 inch has had nothing done to it. Will this just tell me how much brightness and such that I need or will it do more?

The this that's coming out now is titled "HD Basics" and from what I understand give you only the most basic test patterns.
There's the same kinds of test patterns that were on DVE, all they're doing is differentiating from the pro package.

Basically HD Basics is concentrating on 1080p calibration, while the Pro has everything from 480i-1080p and a lot more tweaker tests.

Add to that the Demo material on the disc is 720p... WTH? Stuff that just pop in I Am Legend or Enchanted and see demo material in 1080p,.. sheesh.
The cameras they had available at the time it was shot was only 720p. Either way, the demo footage is very much a stress test for your system anyway. It's all explained on the commentary

Wicky,

That's good. From what I could read online it wasn't the full set of patterns from DVE but a much simplified version.

If you're right (I assume you know already) then I'll certainly be picking this up.

(Although come to think of it my DVD version on DVE (the later version) doesn't even have the grey scale patterns on 10 step widows. It only had 0, 20, 40,60,80,100 which means I had to use a different test disc anyway. I'll certainly rent this HD Basics and check it out.)

how do you get to the calibration extra on Ratatouille?

Wicky, how will this disc perform for a 720p set? Is it worth it if you don't have 1080p?

It'll perform fine. The 1080p stuff is more performance based

I haven't tried it on 720p, so YMMV

According to the official website, the tri-color filter is included. It's really the only reason I ordered it. I got my black levels perfect thanks to the Sony easter egg test patterns. Well, I need to adjust the contrast too. White doesn't bloom on my LCD, but I know it's turned up too high. Anyone with an LCD have any tips to get a good contrast level? It'll be a week before it gets delivered to me.
