It would be great if WB released a 40th anniversary Diamond Luxe version next year with a restored transfer, lossless audio and new extras. But they won't...

Does anyone know what version this is? The packaging seems to be a standard Blu-ray case with artwork all in English and no international rating symbols.

thanks in advance for any insight!

Transfer on this definitely isn't a 4.5 out of 5 by today's standards. Hopefully it'll get remastered this year for an anniversary edition on blu or uhd. It could also use lossless audio.

Yes, this needs a remastered properly encoded BD badly. The sole reason I don't own this yet.

Is Canada the best place to import this now that the US Blu-ray is OOP?

Late to the game, so I’ve read multiple threads now, but none of them mention why this classic film is out of print. What’s the reason?

All of the old digibook releases are OOP now, if a boutique label doesn’t pick this up, I anticipate it’ll get a Warner Archive release in a standard case at some point in the future.

I’ve noticed that, but what’s the reason it’s out of print?

There doesn't have to be a specific reason why certain blu-ray movies becomes OOP. Studios suddenly decide to discontinue manufacturing them, until they sell the copyrights to the movie to be licensed and re-release by another distributor, or they may just re-release the movie themselves in the future.

Digibooks in general never really caught on with collectors like steelbooks. It's been a pretty dead US market other than the occasional store exclusive release.

Wasn’t it also released in a standard case?

Given their relationship with Warner, I imagine Criterion will pick this up with a 4k remaster to boot.

Not in North America as far as I know. There were European releases that came in standard cases. I mean if you don't mind the fact that the cover isn't in English, you can still pick up one of those releases:

Of course I get that films go out of print for a variety of reasons, but this is pretty sad.
Wiki:
Considered by many to be one of the greatest films ever made, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is No. 33 on the American Film Institute's 100 Years... 100 Movies list. The film was the second to win all five major Academy Awards (Best Picture, Actor in Lead Role, Actress in Lead Role, Director and Screenplay).

I have the UK version, but that looks OOP too. I think it had more special features. I combined it with the DVD collectors edition with all the swag and it had even more features, including the full documentary, so I'm set

I really think it's just that Warner discontinued their digibook line and are pretty much transitioning all of their catalogue titles to Warner Archive. They've slowly been re-releasing the titles that originally came out as digibooks such as Cabaret, Meet Me In St Louis, Papillon, The Jazz Singer, but there's still a few yet to go such as Cuckoo's Nest, The Killing Fields, Man Who Would Be King....

Warner may not have the rights anymore.

Warner owns the Saul Zaentz/Fantasy Films catalog which also includes Ralph Bakshi's The Lord of the Rings and Amadeus.

I have a (supposed) Russian version that I picked-up at a Pacifica Street Fair, that looks to be the same as the one you posted. It's Extras are:

First time on Blu-ray – Completely Cuckoo, a comprehensive 87-minute retrospective in its full original length Michael Douglas, Milos Forman and Ken Kesey describe how a movie landmark was made with actors and patients lonlocation in a working mental hospital.

Commentary by Director Milos Forman, Producers Michael Douglas and Saul Zaentz providing scene-by-scene insight into the creative choices made in creating this timeless film.

Revealing additional scenes and theatrical trailer.

********

The Reviewed version here at BR.com says it has a "Making of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest— "Clocking in at 47 minutes..."

And "Deleted Scenes" which might be the same as the "additional scenes."

And, I assume the same Documentary(?)
