Bill, would you consider raising with the studios the practice of including two complete versions of a movie on a single BD disc? Warner did this with I Am Legend, and New Line has done it repeatedly, sometimes with the second version being a PiP version, and most recently with Dark City, to provide both the director's cut and the theatrical cut.

I haven't yet seen Dark City myself, but this practice of including two complete versions of the movie on a single disc cannot be a positive for those of us who are just interested in getting the best possible PQ and SQ on the movie. Starting out with only half the space on the disc for each version of the movie, before even counting the space needed for extras, seems really misguided to me at least.

+1. Either they should use seamless branching (if not difficult to implement) or split into 2 discs by getting rid off this stupid Digital Copy.

Bill, please let Warner know that their digital copies of this weeks releases are useless with Ipods! Whoever thought that one up needs to be fired.

As a follow-up to my earlier comment, I have now had a chance to watch a substantial part of Dark City, and I am sorry to say that all the negative reports about the PQ are completely justified. I do think that a major reason for the use of DNR throughout was in order to be able to get two versions of the movie on a single disc.

Bill, I really hope this is something that you can bring up with the people who are making the decisions to do this sort of thing.

I agree. Two separate full versions of a movie on a single disc is just not acceptable. Seamless branching (if there's enough overlap) or separate discs are the only acceptable solutions.

Hey Bill any word on single disc Blade Runner, or Close Encounters Blu ray anytime soon? I'm also disappointed the original Apes is not being offer separately. Dirty Harry and Omen were and I hoped the practice would repeat.

Can we give Bill a chance to answer the question, and not turn this into a pro-ipod vs. Mac-bashers thread please?

I thought I AM LEGEND looked and sounded absolutely brilliant! I wish all of my BRs had LEGEND's PQ & AQ. I think it might be a bigger issue than just "two movies on one disc" if one of your examples is reference quality.

And I resent having to pay for a Digital Copy of a movie that I'll NEVER use (Juno, Jumper, etc...) I don't own an IPOD and I don't plan on getting one for a long time, if ever, so don't make me waste money that could be spent on more movies. This is not directed at Bill or anyone in particular, just a rant.

Bill:

In light of amazon offering a pre-order on INDY IV on Blu-Ray can we expect an official announcement from paramount in the next few days?

Holy cow. Just read at the digitalbits about the potential BD release for the Disney-Dali film Destino in 2010. I'm holding my breath for your eventual confirmation.

I just caught this on My Two Cents:

Quote:
And here's some great news... Genius will finally release Planet Terror and Death Proof on Blu-ray Disc on 12/16 (SRP $28.95). Extras, however, appear to be identical to the prevoius DVD editions.
Thanks but no thanks, Genius. Is there any indication that Grindhouse will ever be released in its proper theatrical form? The movies are OK, but Grindhouse is really about the whole 3 hour+ experience, not the quality of the films alone.

I want it on Blu-Ray. Without changing/flipping discs if possible.

The Japanese special edition DVD is the kind of thing I'm looking for on this one. The inevitability of it coming out in the end means I'll wait.

It is only seven minutes long, so it will be interesting to see what they do to make it substantial. Perhaps a documentary and some other shorts.

Hey Bill,

Is there any truth to the rumors that Neil Young's long awaited Archives project is finally being released on blu-ray on November 4?
