I hope, and I guess, it is true, but look at DVD-ram, DVD+r, DVD-r. Even with a standards organisation it is possible to have an outwards battle if decisions are not made in a timely manner

Jeff,

I know Warner Bros and NFL will release Super Bowl XLIII on sd-dvd.

What are the chances we will see it on Blu?

Thanks

So we get the highlights in Blu, but not the full game. Oh well, better than nothing.

When you say "next year for the full game", do you mean SB XLIV or that XLIII will be released next year?

Thanks Jeff.

Jeff,

One more question. Warner has stated that the original King Kong will be released on Blu sometime this year. Are there any chances they will also release Son of Kong and Mighty Joe Young on Blu at the same time as they did on SD-DVD?

Thanks

I said maybe next year, and it would be next year's game

Typically the way any "current events" disc is done is that they start doing it when they're pretty sure of who the 3-4 finalists are going to be, and start gathering and compressing materials in advance. For example, the Obama DVD coming in a few weeks has been in authoring off and on since around September. This Steelers disc was almost certainly the same way.

Much thanks for keeping this thread going guys and for all your insight here and at The Bits.

I have one of those (annoying ?) "when can we see" questions.
Given the nature of things and the movies concerned I'm sure the answers are negative, but I had to ask anyway, and I appreciate your indulgence....

Is there any sign of MGM doing anything with "It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" on Blu ?

WB with "The Great Race" ?

Fox with "Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines" ?

I used to have them on Laserdisc, had to wait a while for the DVD's and would love to see them on Blu, particularly "Mad".

Robert Harris is the man when it comes to Mad Mad World, it is/was a pet project of his. I know he had a big proposal to restore it as close as possible to its roadshow version but I don't think the money ever came through

Haven't heard anything about the others

Today we were able to publically confirm Indy, and it's a great example of things being fluid.

The Indiana Jones Trilogy ALMOST streeted last year with Indy 4, but at the last minute was nixed because the masters simply weren't up to snuff. It was literally killed at the final go/no go point. Now work was being done on these as early as June 2008, so all signs pointed to them coming. I would have felt really bad if we'd said something as dear to everyone's hearts as Indy was on the way and then it didn't happen. Whatever we get this fall is going to be much better than those discs would have been, and that's great news for everyone

Indy is hardly an isolated case, but it's a great example of why I tend to err on the side of caution. After all, who can forget how many times Blade Runner or Ed Wood skipped off the release pond? The sandle epic I was referring to also missed its window for this year, so hopefully it'll be coming around again for next (It wasn't Gladiator or Ben-Hur I swear, you may all breathe again )

So no "The Ten Commandments" this year, huh?!

Good... I can save some money and pick up "The Robe"...

Jeff, I heard that Universal was working on Scarface for this year. I know you said that things beyond May or so are quite fluid, but can you confirm that it is in the works for some point sooner rather than later?

Haven't heard anything about Scarface either way. It is a big title for Universal, so I'm sure it's high on their priority list. If it's not out this year I'd be shocked if it wasn't out next.

How do you guys want me to handle this? I need to balance the needs of confidenciality of course, but obviously more details would be preferable

1- The way things have been going
2- More information in Penton style mysteries

I can do both, but 2 is a lot more work and maybe ultimately less satisfying for the more casual reader. What's the feelings from the masses?

Thats great to hear. If them delaying it from last year means it will be a better release for THIS year, then Im all in favor of it.

Thanks

Hopefully this means that Star Wars will come to bluray sooner rather than later. I have conceded that we will never see the unaltered original trilogy on blu.

But Ill be happy with the special editions.

On that note, do you know if there have been further alterations made in any of the six films?

Ive read the TPM had a digital Yoda to replace the godawful puppet.

Other than that, are the any realistic changes expected?

Jeff, great news to hear. I much rather wait and make sure they get it done right.

Question though - what type of work did they do for the masters regarding the 2003 DVD and how will this 'new' work be different for the Blu-ray? Are they actually going back to the original negative, and/or is it more digital type work?

I know with the current state the format, most questions will be about titles people are excited to see (excitement = good). I personally prefer learning about processes and projects (e.g. grain matching for TDK, and some of the conversation of late with Gabriel, in Penton's thread, and behind the scenes stuff), so... my vote goes to whichever minimizes the 'when is xxx coming to blu-ray' questions.

As for the 'direct answers' vs. 'word play', will depend on the amount of interaction you'd like to see in your thread... I'm no help, sorry
