Yeah, you probably are. Those films are wonderful.

I doubt it. While I enjoyed them, there's no way I'm sitting though Titanic again. Maybe gump and braveheart... The only one I am somewhat interested in is Gladiator. For me it's not just the quality of the movie, but the rewatchability factor...

Why didn't you like Titanic?

I also have only a mild interest in Gladiator. The rest of those can kiss it.

Titanic I always saw as the greatest string puller ever

You're all weepy the first time through, and then you hate yourself a week later. It's not a very good movie, it's very good at knowing what buttons to push.

It's not that I didn't like it (although I only thought it was okay), but I just don't think I could sit through. Too long and slow for me. Maybe I just had a bad theatre experience. Either way - not interested in owning it at all.

Anyway, that's all I have to say because I don't want to derail this thread. There are more interesting posts than the reasons I won't buy titanic...

Hey Jeff, have you gotten anywhere near to the bottom of the Monsters, Inc./A Bug's Life situation yet?

How Gump beat Shawshank is beyond me. Shawshank is in a different league.

Well, Shawshank is my number one movie of all time, so I partially agree with you. Gump, however, is in my top 10, so I partially don't.

I think they're both solid, well-crafted two-and-a-half-star movies. Pulp Fiction is ten times both of them put together.

Well for me, those 4 films are perfect examples of the artistic decline of Hollywood in the last 20 years; they are nothing more than lowest-common-denominator multiplex fare, masquerading as art.

In that regard Kate has always been very generous.

Come to think of it, who has the rights for Jude? (I have the OOP DVD, but it's non-anamorphic.)

Gump's traction was much better than Shawshank's. Shawshank began to be popular afterwards.

Oscars seem to notice commercial successes much much more than anything else.
Would Slumdog had won if it hadn't develop its word of mouth thing beforehand?

Of course you could find hundreds of examples I'm sure.
But the facts are still there.

Ask Jeff why the Academy doesn't like films like TDK.

(and then you could say, "like Return of the King?" ) And then it would be a neverending discussion.

You don't really understand the term lowest common denominator. That means a film is dumbed down per say so that even the simplest audience member can understand and that relatively no brain power is used whatsoever.

I'd beg to disagree with you on these 4 films appealing to the lowest common denominator.
