Suffice to say, the spoilery sin cannot be taken as anything else, highlight it and you'll see. True Believers should already be sharpening their pitchforks

I make it a point to see everything I hate so that no one can say my opinions are uneducated. I suffered through enterprise, voyager, and that Ron Moore space above and beyond/west wing ripoff that stole BSG's proper nouns. I suffered through Transformers, and a whole bunch of other movies

I don't know if I'll hate this, it could be that I'll find the rest of the film acceptible (but I doubt it). The casting appears good at least, it's a shame they can't be romping toward the correct goal. I'm looking far more to Bryan Fuller's proposed series with a new ship and a new crew in the early TOS era, where he wants to put the romp back in Trek again. Nathan Fillion who will undoubtedly be cancelled again by then should be free, and let's face it, its a total fit for that type of show

You know, there aren't many things that could bring me on board for a new Star Trek show, but Nathan Fillion as a TOS-era captain is certainly one of them.

The same era that this movie would take place in, 5-10 years before TOS.

I will say that I reminded other people of the old holocaust saying, and that they wouldn't like it if someone came in and made Jane Kirk, a celibate lesbian who always thinks logically, Spock from a race incapable of logic, who is best of friends with the always even-tempered McCoy, that there would be rioting in the streets. Well, needless to say last I checked those certain parties have the same issues I do with the new movie, and I can't help if but wonder if when it comes to Hollywood, the slipperly slope isn't such a logical fallacy

If people want a film or a show to be judged on its own merits, or enjoyed for what it is, it has to be original. I do not preclude that I might enjoy this film very much when it's not pissing me off. If you'll notice, unlike a lot of fans, I do try to offer solutions that will fix the problem and achieve the goals the filmmakers have, instead of merely *****ing. I try to make my criticism constructive (though Ron Moore's show required raizing pretty much from the pilot) with things like the "Tom Sawyer" bit.

An acquaintence of mine worked at a high level on a popular "re-imagining", and knowing him to be a major fan of the original. I simply asked him "We were lucky we got as much as we did didn't we, and you were there fighting tooth and nail for that little ground" He rolled his eyes and nodded Sometimes there are forces of marketing/MBAs who know what they want and you have to do the job and schindler's list yourself what you can. Other times, like Moore and JJ, you have carte blanche to do what you will, and that is a really dangerous thing, They really need a council of no with veto power in those situations, made up of fans of the original which will keep them in line.
[Show spoiler]Blowing up Vulcan
, IMO is one of those veto power moments, and besides:

But these little setbacks are sometimes just what we need to take a giant step forward- Chris Knight

IMO, we're deep into the realm of mixed-feelings here. Personally, I think that if a project has crossed an invisible line into 'too deviant from the spirit of the source material' and one doesn't have the power to bring it far enough back, it's probably better to cut one's losses and let it diverge as much as it wants to, the better to differentiate it from the original. If it's going to try to stand on its own divergent ideas, let it fall by them, too. And let it drag the original down with it in as few minds as possible. Valiant as a Schindler would be in this situation, I'd probably elect to discourage such efforts. That is, if I hadn't already left in a huff, long before (read: zero chance).

It's funny how sub-thread topics come together, but I was commenting earlier in Penton's thread about having been too close to both sides of copyright dispute. In one such instance, I had a colleague who felt he had a claim to damages over a theatrical release he thought had infringed upon an original screenplay he had submitted to the film's creators. He and I had seen the allegedly infringing film together for the first time. We both thought the movie was awful, but he came out of the theatre fuming about what he saw as infringement. I kept suggesting he drop the matter because I found the movie so bad, I'd never want to fight to associate my name with it, had I been in his position.

It's more complicated than I put it, I'm specifically trying to not refer to the person in question directly, or provide clues to find them

The one positive thing I can say about Ron Moore is that he's at least honest that he hated the original, didn't give a crap about it, and was in slash and burn mode from the start, and that he had the guts to show up at a real BSG con to plead his case in the Lion's den. I just wish he had walked in there looking for ways to help him make the fans happy, rather than convince them to change their minds.

Yeah, but in this case more information would provide enough clues for me to follow the trail, and I can only assume someone else would be smart enough too

Speaking of Ron Moore, he will make a cameo on this Thursday's episode of CSI, written by his DS9/BSG friends/writing team Bradley Thompson and David Weddle. One of CSI's execs is Naren Shankar, who was also a writer with Moore on TNG.

Lot of abbreviations there.

Ok, that explains it.

For the record, from what you have told about the film so far, it doesn't sound promising.

Now this one just caught my interest. Have to find some more info on this idea.

However, it may be worth tempering his comments with the early reports of those who have seen the film, most of them apparently quite favorable.

Never have I listened to masses. They are easily pleased, nowadays anyway.

Well, the people who've seen the movie so far are Star Trek die-hards... just like Jeff.

They aren't from the masses, they are hardcore TREK fans.

I'm looking forward to the film.

Man but that camp factor I don't miss at all. Do you and Bill ever argue considering he's such a big fan of the new BSG?

It was meant as a joke. Trekkies and masses are different things. At least in my book (which I don't have).

I'm just saying, if you're going to put any stock into Jeff's take on the movie, there are a bunch of folks out there who are big into Trek like Jeff, but have actually seen what they're commenting on, and most of them seem to have responded well to it.
