I know it's close to or equal to lossless, but the point of Blu-ray is that there's no need to use lossy in terms of bandwidth or disk space. Many people say there's not much difference between full bitrate DTS and multichannel lossless, either.

Deserving or not, mono/stereo tracks are getting the shaft on Blu

Hey Jeff, Just curious if the Natural is coming out on Blu-Ray soon? I know there was some problem with the initial release, Thanks

Since you're new. Take a look back a few pages on announcements and why if we know about something we might not say (general advisory, not a hint or anything)

Nothing about that no

Wonder if these will depreciate as fast as the DVD sets (the hard shell ones that were blue/gold/red shirt style). They all started out ~$100 and even before BD were down in the $30 range each.

For such an old series, don't think I'm willing to do more than $100 for the whole shebang.

The "shirt" sets went down to 30 because they were replaced by the remastered sets and were being cleared out

Yeah, this is pretty much an "ultimate" release, so I don't see them dropping anytime soon. But I would imagine there will be good sales during the holidays.

And now it's time for a special Saturday episode of...

TWO THINGS THAT MAKE BILL VERY HAPPY TODAY!

1. Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series is now available for pre-order on Blu-ray at Amazon.com.

http://thedigitalbits.com/#bsgpre

2. Microsoft has name-dropped Blu-ray in a PC commercial:

I don't get the big on Microsoft name-dropping blu-ray but I guess I ignored most of that war. Hey Bill, I wonder how far away we are from regularly seeing blu-rays at $10 a piece?

I don't think you will see new releases at $10 for a very long time. Older catalogs that have been out for over year may get close to $10 by chrsitmas, but I am not even sure if we are going to see new releases drop below $20 this year. We are going to see the 24-29 a movie price for a while (IMO)

I am debating if I should get the x-men trilogy or just the two missing movies, what is the difference between the new release of the third one and the original?

I think there might be a few added special features. I know there is a digital copy for it.

You avoided the format war? Consider yourself lucky, sir! Let's put it this way... if someone at Microsoft had let the positively-exclaimed words "Blu-ray!" slip into one of their TV commercials a year and a half ago, they'd have been out of a job quick.

Many catalog BDs are down around $10-15 on Amazon on sale. Give it time.

Bill, Universal, Lions Gate, Paramount, Disney, are the best studios in the transfer to blu-ray fun. When will Fox, Warner Brothers and the others catch up?

They didn't slip anything. MS is finally launching a 3-years too late counter to the "I'm a Mac" campaign. They're partnering with the laptop manufacturers and Best Buy to promote what they should have been doing all along. "I'm a PC, and you can buy the same exact hardware for hundreds, less". The first 2 ads were with HP, this ad was with Sony, who obviously was pushing Blu in their laptops. The fact that they could get a dig in at Apple with it probably didn't hurt either, but all 3 companies get what they want in those ads, not just MS.

I never understand the hate for Fox's discs. They're almost universally excellent, the movies that tend to be on many of their catalog stuff is what doesn't look that great on the negative. Lionsgate has more than their fair share of mediocre, heavily DNR'd discs for instance.

How is FOX not good in the transfer department? They are putting out some amazing transfers. I am not sure where you are coming from. I, Robot, the bond movies, ID4, many of the best looking titles on bluray have come from the FOX library.

this question is for Bill or Jeff--

obviously the glowing review of the STAR TREK tv series sounds awesome--

do you guys anticipate a similar quality for the upcoming STAR TREK movie set? There is controversy of a "better" set coming out later with directors cuts-- I don't care much about that but I do want the best, remastered
picture quality that I can get--

I was very disappointed with the JACK RYAN movies released early in the game- I wouldn't want that with the Trek movies...

People I trust who were involved in the new HD transfers and remastering of the films tell me that they look and sound terrific. I should have the proof in hand in the next couple weeks, so watch The Bits for our review.
