Hi Jeff-
First off, thanks for all the work on this thread. It's always interesting to come here and get the latest. I noticed that a Near Dark re-release for dvd came out today. Based on the cover, it certainly appears they are trying to tap the Twilight market. But, I was wondering if Lionsgate had any plans to bring this movie to Blu-ray? Thanks for any insight you can offer. ![]() |

I'm not sure if this question is valid, but I'm getting tired of seeing crappy little movies getting blu ray treatments, when great movies are not. What motivates a studio to release a flick on blu ray and what motivates them not to?

Can we expect much more in the way of catalog releases in Q3 and Q4 2009 other than what has been announced and is rumoured? Or is the economic climate going to mean that the end of the year is kept clear for all the big summer movies. I was for instance hoping for a few horror movies in October to tie in with Halloween including maybe Nightmare of Elm Street and Night of the Living Dead, which have been released outside the US. Thanks in advance for any information. |

yeah, I'll second that question-- I'm hoping that the studios give us some
horror titles for October. I'm hoping that since many of them would not be "blockbuster titles" that maybe they haven't been announced yet... |

Nothing has passed pencilled in status for October, especially when it comes to Disney. Their entire schedule has been playing musical chairs so I don't want to say anything at this time. I had a long conversation with one of my sources last Thursday on that very topic (and to call it a ***** session is a grand understatement

I would expect that there are many more catalog titles planned for the last two quarters along with the summer movies. If they back away from catalog releases, then we are looking at one or two movies a week only. This will not happen. Universal, as an example, has made very few announcements regarding their releases, I expect them to hit us with a bunch of catalog titles that they put out on hd-dvd. The other studios more than likely have some movies lined up they just haven't announced yet.

Jeff:
Thanks for continuing to take the time to answer our questions here. Do you know if there are any plans to release the other seasons of CSI? I watched season 1 for the first time on BR and really enjoyed it, and would like to hold off on getting the dvds of seasons 2, etc. if there's a chance that they will be released in BR in the future. Thanks! |

Hey Bill, Jeff, etc...
With all the 3D buzz in theaters lately, will the Bits consider having a discussion or dialog about the value of bringing it into the home (i.e. is the tech viable, is it worth it, etc.). Seems to me that with the prevalence now of Home Theater's, 3D is a way for theater owner's to get people to leave their homes and come back to the Cinema. Is the general consensus at the Bits that 3D is worth having at home too? This is all reminding me of a time when to get a DTS track version of a DVD, you had to get a special version that had it...DD was the standard, so DTS always came on a second DVD. Until of course the demand showed value in having both in one release. With the news of Monster's vs. Aliens not being a dual 3D/Regular Blu-ray release...it seems we are again heading down the path of the double-dip release model. Me no like ![]() |

Not exactly. DTS' initial releases were 1536kbps tracks, it wasn't until they introduced the 754kbps rate that having both tracks became feasible without eating too much bandwidth.

Double dipping is the basic model for home video, and remember that DW had to be dragged kicking and screaming with a $100 million check to start putting out any HD content at all. Their discs have been excellent in both HD exclusive content and quality since then mind you. They almost certainly do not want to compromise with a red/blue version that most people don't like as well, because future systems will be likely LCD shutter glasses. |

Why is Paramount the only studio that gives us what we ask for like the godfather, Gladiator. The other studios gives us what they want to put out and most of the time they are delayed or they don't come out to blu-ray at all or they don't do good tranfers and they re-release them again a year later.
