Yeah, but how well would the "Kubrick Stare" work through the Bat Mask?

1. Michael Keeton - way too short for the role and he just didnt do it for me. Never had the agility to adequately fill the role. Val Kilmer was better. Kevin Conroy should just redub all of Christian Bale's lines.

2. Jack Nicholson - despite all the praise he received, his Joker was that: a Joke. He was more of a baffoon than a menace. Heath Ledger had the opposite problem. Mark Hamill's joke is by far the best methinks.

3. There was no origin involved whatsoever. Although, I did read why Burton chose to not to have an origin.

However, I DID love the musical score and the look of Gotham.

As much I love Nolan's films, I do give an edge to the Animated Series for being the best interpretation of Batman.
I think Bale should re dub his own lines. I also don't agree with your opinion of Nicholsons Joker. Romero's Joker was buffoon. Nicholson's Joker sort of pays tribute to that version but if his various murders and executions throughout the film don't equal menace than I don't know what does. I loved ledgers Joker but he didn't seem to find as much sick delight in his kills that I would expect from someone like the Joker.

While yes, he did bad things, but I never felt a chill when he was on screen in the same way that I felt from the Killing Joke.

While yeah, Ledger's joker as great as it was lacked the necessary silliness needed to truly be the joker, but it was more realistic.

^This.

No matter how well done, I just can't take any comic book movies seriously. Even Dark Knight seemed cheesy to me. Comic books should stay in their cartoon domain.

You mean super hero comic books right? I've heard people say this. Is it the costumes that bring you out of the film?

Dark Knight, Iron Man, Watchmen and even Incredible Hulk. I think comic book movies are at a whole new level now and it will show as more people gravitate towards the excellent ones and avoid the bad ones in the future.

Was Paramount trying to be funny when they show the Sapphire Series commercial in SD (bad SD at that) on the Braveheart bluray?

The Dark Knight was FAR from a comic book movie. It was a very well-rounded movie that involved a comic book character. Many people who aren't into that genre gave it rave reviews...

I think you are right. I also think it will go down as one of the best written and directed films in the past 50 years, but some people just cant get past the fact that it is a film about a comic book charecter.

The problem is that people in the United States are under the impression that "comic book" is a genre.

The Dark Knight is a comic book movie; its also a crime drama and an action movie. But to say its not a comic book movie is disingenuous and only acts to diminish an american art form: the comic book.

Was The Dark Knight an adaptation of one comic story or storyline? No, but it was a pastiche of various different comic stories over the Batman's 70 year publishing history. Do you say that Quantum of Solace is not a spy movie because it was not based on a spy novel as Casino Royale was? (And I know the title came from a Fleming short story, but not unlike The Dark Knight, the film was nothing like the short story form which the title was pilfered). Quantum of Solace, like The Dark Knight, took elements of various Bond stories to construct a new story -- but that does not change that fact that it is a film based on a series of spy novels.

The Dark Knight and Batman Begins were based on comic books. They are, therefore, comic book movies. And there is nothing wrong with that.

I agree with your perspective. I think the point being made is that you shouldn't dismiss a movie just because you think it falls into a certain category, no matter what it might be. There are incredible films that are made in every genre possible.
To dismiss something because it's "comic book" or sci-fi or fantasy or animation is to truly miss out on some excellent filmmaking that will bust your preconceived notions of the genre.

Jeff,

This is a technical question, so IDK if you are the right person to ask, if not could you please bring it to the attention of who may be able to answer it. Thanks.

With all the uproar about the two different masters for Gladiator(Theatrical and Extended), is it possible to create a disc using the extended edition(with the presumably better master) and branch the theatrical version off of that encode? Or is it easier to use a theatrical and then extend it?

Bill or Jeff....per these screenshots I posted in the main Gladiator thread:

From the Theatrical Edition - http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...theatrical.jpg

From the Extended Edition - http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...r-extended.png

I'm guessing/hoping that Paramount/Universal has the entire movie available somewhere that looks as good as these Extended Edition scenes seamlessly branched do.

Does Universal/Paramount have a complete version of Gladiator that matches the Extended Edition scenes' picture quality??
