If you read Bill's speculation on TheDigitalBits, you'll see that he thinks that the theatrical edition materials were scanned from an early DVD master, and the Extended were scanned from a later master.
The source elements should still be available and simply need to be rescanned for a new HD master.

With all the uproar about the two different masters for Gladiator(Theatrical and Extended), is it possible to create a disc using the extended edition(with the presumably better master) and branch the theatrical version off of that encode? Or is it easier to use a theatrical and then extend it?
The extended scenes were scanned at a different time, then spliced in. There is no "one piece" extended edition

So in that case, a whole new transfer of the original film needs to be done... How long does that typically take? Would you suspect that any restoration work is necessary?? Or is it that the exact "settings" that were used for the extended scene transfer would lead to a technically identical standard version? (ie you wouldnt notice any difference in PQ between the two scenes)

Alright, so now that's answered.....They HAVE to know the Extended Edition scenes look so much better than the Theatrical, so why didn't they take the time to remaster the entire movie to match the Extended scenes? I hope you guys that are connected in the industry hold their feet to the fire and find out answers.

Geez….
Please take the campaigning to one of the Gladiator threads we have on this forum with all the associated silly posturing that goes on there.

I mean really, if anyone of authority from Paramount Home Video reads your “hold their feet to the fire and find out answers”, it will just antagonize them and make further communication with the Bits and Paramount that much more difficult.

Default Sapphire Series Commercials in 480p?!?!

Hey Jeff,

Not to be too harsh on Paramount, but what is your opinion on this thread?

Sapphire Series Commercials on Braveheart Blu -- 480p?!?!

Isn't it defeating the purpose of advertising the "quality" of a new series of "Sapphire" Blu's by distribution commercials for them in 480p?

Not that I like commercials on ANY Blu, but if they're gonna do it, wouldn't it be adviseable to show it off in 1080p?

Just curious of your opinion as it still seems that some studio's don't get it IMHO...

Id say that there was more likely the wrong tape used than anything else. And I'm going to leave it at that

I loved ledgers Joker but he didn't seem to find as much sick delight in his kills that I would expect from someone like the Joker.
"Wanna see a magic trick?" scene would like a word with you.

I can tell you guys are getting tired of the Sapphire/Gladiator discussion so I'll just throw out my opinion that it's disappointing that mistakes seem to keep being made on this "premier" release and on Blu-Ray as a whole. (Patton, Longest Day, Gangs of New York, etc)

That said, TheDigitalbits.com has done a lot for everyone's enjoyment of home theater. They worked hard to make DVD a success and Divx go away. They worked hard to encourage studios to release anamorphic transfers and uphold quality standards for video and audio on DVD.

They've done the same thing with Blu-Ray. Bill Hunt was the only guy from all the home theater sites I read who was willing to lead the charge for Blu-Ray and end the format war. Today I know he's working hard to encourage the studios with Blu-Ray in the same way he did with DVD.

This hobby would be lesser for it without his work.

Good to hear , as I missed the whole format war but, my Dad tells me old war stories of other heroes involved like Wicky Woo, Maxpower and Paidgeek.
I’m more an animal lover me-self…….

And for the real answer.......they aren't on the disc!

The Sapphire Series Commercial, Blu-ray Promo, and Star Trek Promo are streamed via BD-Live. Depending on your connection speed, you will see either 480i and 720p. It's a very clever trick. You'll probably see them change down the road.

^^really? I never would have known that because there was no buffering issue at all! There wasn't even a BD-Live option for Braveheart!

The promos are BAD, BAD encodes. About as bad as original Youtube video played full screen.

They begin buffering during the Paramount Logo.

You won't see it via the menu as of now. They could add it later though.

What does one see if one doesn't have a BD-Live player?

Might explain why you see the "wreath" load twice?

Yes it does. One for the streaming and one for the main menu.

Jeff, sorry taking over the thread here for a bit. Hope you didn't mind.
