The Sapphire Series Commercial, Blu-ray Promo, and Star Trek Promo are streamed via BD-Live. Depending on your connection speed, you will see either 480i and 720p. It's a very clever trick. You'll probably see them change down the road.
Wow, I had no idea. Actually, now that makes sense. Mine started to play and I brought up the TV/Info to see what resolution they were in (since I had already read about the "issue"). It read 720p. I had some hitching and stopped the disc. When I restarted it then read in 480 (though mine said 480p I believe). Pretty seamless and kind of cool. I think I was downloading something else at the time so that may be why it ramped back on me.

Although this is a neat trick, I can see this being abused in the future. There would seem to be no technical reason that studios couldn't sell advertising, and play a new commercial prior to each movie. I like BD-Live, but I am not particularly keen on the idea of BD-Live changing my content without warning me first. Hopefully I am just being paranoid.

Jeff, sorry taking over the thread here for a bit. Hope you didn't mind.
Seriously?

That was very informative, and far better than all that Kubrick talk.

Jeff,

So it looks Toshiba has announced their first bluray player.

Any thoughts?

Toshiba gear is usually pretty solid, but fairly unremarkable, in my experience.

Just another player, as far as I can tell.

Actually, I think that's the whole idea behind it.

I'm sure the lack of HD DVD playback will result in amusing commentary. Otherwise it's been coming for 20 months now, pretty much happened on the timeline I figured it would.

I don't like it either and I am usually paranoid. What I did is just skip to the menu, first thing. Typically what I always do.

Still a really, REALLY bad idea -- they make the releases look HORRIBLE!

IMHO of course

No, rather that you apologized for going off-topic. I felt it was right on topic and informative, especially compared to the Kubrick movies talk a page or so back.

This technology relies to project a blu-ray image to end consumer through a vulnerable technology like Internet and make itself vulnerable by making Internet problems appear like blu-ray problems to the end consumer.

blu-ray is a robust and solid technology that has the potential to deliver HD in an unprecedented manner. Internet-quality is really a joke in comparison to blu-ray. Once a robust technology relies on a weak technology, the weak technology will dominate while giving a negative impact.

If it is essential to use Internet to deliver a message there should be a clear distinction between blu-ray material and Internet. Perhaps a boxed-window of some sort to clearly show that it is an Internet video while giving control to the end consumer to abort the operation if needed rather than creating an apparent freeze to blu-ray playback which will give a bad name to the blu-ray technology.

I feel that this strategy needs lot more work before presentation to ensure that a wrong message will not be delivered to the end consumers...

Does Toshiba's first Blu-ray player look like a vintage VCR (like its HD-A1)?

My bad. See what happens when you're posting on the forums while writing BD-J? I've got a one track mind while I'm at work.
