Jeff,

Would you happen to know anything about plans for a release of the movie WHITEOUT?

I think I may be one of the 12 people in the world that liked it

I should've guessed from the eyepatch on the avatar pic! The evil twin always has an eyepatch.

Hey Jeff, I know you said that you dont always like to comment on the release date of certain titles but I was wondering about Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown. They were announced for Aug 4th. Then they were saying it would come out with Inglourious Basterds. I havent heard anything. Do you or Bill know anything on their release date? Thank you.

Jeff: Have you heard of any BD plans for the "Death Wish" movies that MGM owns (2, 3 & 4)? Those crummy full-frame DVDs are awful. Thanks!

I've especially given up speculating on Tarantino stuff. It's on, it's off, it's up, it's down. It'll be out when you actually see it on a shelf

Nothing on Death Wish

At the Bits we review the quality of the disc, not the movie (see my GI Joe review). You already knowwhat I think of it, and that would also require me having the disc.

If you want to watch Star Trek on Blu-ray, there's a whole pile of lovely season sets and movie boxes on Amazon, and that's all I'm going to say further on it.

If and when Battlestar Galactica comes to Blu-ray, you can be sure I'll be the one doing it, but I don't see that happening for at least 2 years.

Yeah I remember your May/June comments but they were mostly about reimaginings and reboots. I was hoping to see a review proper and I would really pay money to read a "Complete hater's guide to Moore's BSG" that you half jokingly mentioned here:

If I had been chronicling, you'd see "The Complete Haters guide to..." publishing right around now

If you give me a bit, I'll re-generate as much as I can from memory. I'm not sitting through it again just to put that back together unless I have a compelling reason

Anyway, those interested in the list when I have the time to re-assemble it, PM me. As it is, it's midnight, so let's get back to business as usual

Jeff,

I enjoyed your review of GI Joe. I actually found the film to be very enjoyable for what it was. I was disappointed that they didn't do more with Duke though. He seemed underused.

I was glad that they went all out with the silliness though instead of trying to make the technology seem realistic.

How much money?

JJTrek shares the same issues as most other "re-imagining"s. Lack of reverence for the source material, unnecessary changes for the sake of "making it their own" and lazy mistakes that a cadet trekkie would've spotted on the first run through.

The TOS films themselves have all sorts of "lazy mistakes". Khan & Chekov. Deck 78, etc. I also thought in certain areas they were too reverent, like those uniforms (I always hated the TOS uniforms, my favorites are the "militaristic" film ones created for ST:II and the First Contact ones.)

I'm a hardcore Trekker and I loved the new film. As far as the BSG reboot goes, I enjoyed the campy '78 original first run...the "reimagining" had its moments but was wayyy too depressing. Granted, armageddon isn't happy times, but Moore & Co. seemed to go out of their way to make things even worse for our characters.

Deck 78 I'm not familiar with, but those interested can search back for the exhaustive list I made from May of silly continuity violations that could have been fixed with a few days of ADR and a VFX supervisor who cared enough to make sure that engines, escape pods and the like ended up where they belong.

EDIT- Oh Trek 5, and the fact that the Enterprise doesn't have 78 decks, yet they still arrive on it in star Trek 5 after passing deck 50, 60 etc on the rocket boots.

Jeff,

While not perfect, it is very popular and has brought a lot of new fans under the tent. My Mom always hated Trek and loved this movie, same with a bunch of my daughters friends. It's a fun action flick with a good story, tons of action, and some light humor (sometimes a little too much, like when Scotty is beemed into that pipe).

But it's not Star Trek. That's the problem. You can contemporize something without destroying it. It's "A superficial representation of the collective memory of Star Trek" is the best description I've seen. The story is frankly a disaster as well, because of the gigantic detour (more continuity violations, Vulcan has no moon, and the moon would be atomized by that kind of explosion) with an entire half hour spent simply so JJ can shoehorn Nimoy into the movie (literally, all that did not exist before he said yes).

And Ron Moore brought "new fans" in as well. Unfortunately they don't watch what the show really is, simply what someone "re-imagined" it to be. It really doesn't matter that the Trek tent is getting bigger, because JJ Trek's tent is parked over in the next county, and of those new fans, a mere handful (well under 5%) will buy the multipass.

For the record, my mother hated it, and she's always been a very casual Trek viewer, and doesn't share my passion for exactitiude when it's not classic British Literature (Zemeckis Beowulf and Grendle's mother sometime )

Granted, it isn't Star Trek, but that may end up being a good thing in the long run for Paramount. They took the franchise as far as they could with their previous casts and it was time for a new direction. You may not care for the direction, but it's the biggest box office draw for a Star Trek film yet, so "the people" are against you
