Not sure, I only rented it and had Japanese subs on since I was watching with my GF.

Which actually stole the idea from plenty of anime. Check out Castle in the Sky off the top of my head. There are tons of others. The idea has been done before, and overall the entire movie felt... unsurprising. Despite that, I still loved Avatar. It's hard to find a truly original concept these days.

So with these recent international Tora! Tora! Tora! releases making an imminent North American release appear a solid contender, I'm still curious if anyone has heard anything specific.

Jeff?

Thank you for bringing that to my attention. I have only recently started watching anime (trying to hit all the classics first). I'll check that one out.

It's a goodie, but not Miyazaki's best, IMO.

Incidentally, the actual title translates as Laputa: Castle In the Sky, but Disney has elected to scrub it in fear of a certain misinterpretation afflicting our Spanish-speaking friends.

I did a search of the forums, and haven't really seen anything new on this title for awhile, so I figured I'd ask here. Does anyone have any insight into if and when we might see Scorsese's Kundun on blu? I never even bought the DVD because it seemed pretty bare bones, but my wife and I love this movie, and would love to see it again in hi-def.

When I saw KUNDUN theatrically (a terrific, incredibly underrated film BTW), I swear it was the best looking Super-35 originated film I've ever seen. Seriously, some shots were so sharp and devoid of grain I was almost tricked into thinking it had been shot in 65mm. I'd love to see this gorgeous film on Blu-ray.

as much as I enjoy the Star Wars films-- the dialogue there is far worse than any Spiderman film--

Dude, even at best, but worse no. Everyone in the theater was laughing at Dunst whenever she would talk.

Kundun on Blu-ray has been announced for May in Germany by Kinowelt, together with the 5 Chaplin movies.

The PQ on their releases is generally very good with a few exceptions. Dances With Wolves is excellent, Fight Club not so much.

Sadly, most of their releases are region B locked.

Default Ponyo US Blu-ray

According to The Disney Store there won't be lossless Japanese audio on the US release of Ponyo (only the English dub will have DTS-HD MA 5.1, Japanese gets Dolby 5.1)... Can you confirm that with the studio, and if it is accurate, how much crack are they smoking?

This would be the 3rd time I've had to buy a Miyazaki movie from another country/distributor due to Disney's mishandling of his movies as I already have R2J DVDs of Kiki's Delivery Service (R1's Japanese audio track is out of sync) and Laputa (the R1 has major EE + mistimed subtitles), and if this holds up I'll have to get either the IVL release from Hong Kong or the Japanese release of Ponyo on BD to get proper lossless Japanese audio.

Given Disney's current patterns with the HK film, I'm going to say right now that it is likely

HOWEVER

I have put in the inquiry for an official answer. Worse comes to worse, the iVL disc should do you

I'd be interested in this too Jeff. I also have all the Japanese Ghibli DVDs, but I hoped I'd be able to rely on Disney to give the option of lossless on the Japanese & English (for the kids) tracks.

This is very likely another victim of the standard Disney work order form. We'll see what happens, but there's no way I'm getting anything back before Monday

What does that mean?
A standing instruction to have lossless English audio and all other languages lossy?

Correct. It's a standard production template. All of the studios have them

Well the boxoffice record for Titanic is going to fall. Its just a question of how much further Avatar will go.

Hey Jeff any idea how well Lost has done on bluray. Im hoping it is selling well so that the studios might be persuaded to release more series on blu.
